MONACO advance to "Sweet 16" in Roland Garros

Argentine Juan MONACO continues with his raise as he advanced to the second week of action at Roland Garros. He’s got a place in the eight-finals and he will try and keep up the form that helped him winning two ATP tournaments this year: Buenos Aires in February and Austria last week.

The 23-year old MONACO defeated Frenchman Edouard ROGER-VASSELIN in straight sets (6-4, 6-2, 6-4) and he’ll face the winner of compatriot Guillermo CAÑAS and Belgian Kristof VLIEGEN.

Yesterday, Former Roland Garros champion Gastón GAUDIO, couldn’t maintain the level of performance shown in the first two sets and he was knocked out of contention by Australian Lleyton HEWITT in five.

At the moment of writing, David NALBANDIAN won the first set (7-6) playing the first-set tie-break against local boy Gael MONFILS and will look to secure a place in the next round where he could be up against Russian Nicolay DAVYDENKO (4th seeded).

CAÑAS is leading VLIEGEN (6-4 in the first, 1-1 in the second) and Juan Pablo BRZEZICKI will face a tough test in Carlos MOYA later in this round.

We already have MONACO amongst the 16 survivors and three others could follow him.

I'll update on their progress when my work allows me to...

CAÑAS advanced, so we already have an Argentine guaranteed in the quarter-finals as one from him and MONACO will reach that stage.

NALBANDIAN is still battling with MONFILS.

David won 2 sets and he is trailing 3-4 in the fourth.

NALBANDIAN is also through to the next round after beating MONFILS in four sets and will face Nikolay DAVYDENKO in a very tough match.

We wait on Juan Pablo BRZEZNICKI who will take on MOYA later on today.

BRZEZICKI is the correct spelling of Juan Pablo's surname.

Not an easy one, I must say!

An interesting thing I've just noticed is that if David NALBANDIAN wins his next match, we'll have one Argentine guaranteed in the semifinals!

If logic plays its part, Roger FEDERER will stand against the surviving Argie in the top side of the draw.

And I'm sure the Swiss is already wishing not to face CAÑAS again!

BRZEZICKI is the only Argentina coming from the other side of the draw and if he progresses further, he'll theoretically face Rafael NADAL in the quarter-finals.

BRZEZICKI will play tomorrow.
Sorry for the confussion through my comments.
