The Chelsea curse now hit Nigeria: Obi MIKEL out

What about this!?

Let's take a look at the notable names injured and out of the World Cup:

Michael BALLACK -Germany- (injured during the FA Cup final).

Michael ESSIEN -Ghana- (struggling with injury since I don't know when and couldn't recover in time for South Africa 2010).

Jose BOSINGWA -Portugal- (knee injury. No chance to appear in the World Cup).

Didier DROGBA -Ivory Coast- (broke a bone in his arm in a friendly v. Japan. Some doctors are saying he could be back just in time for the World Cup but he is a major doubt).

And now John Obi MIKEL -Nigeria-.

He was officially withdrawn from the Super Eagles' World Cup squad because the player has stated he doesn't want to compromise his future career by playing in South Africa not being 100% recovered from a knee injury.

That is a huge blow for Nigeria. I remember him playing in the FIFA Youth World Cup 2005 in The Netherlands. He was Nigeria's best player and he helped them all the way to the final, where they met a certain player name Lionel MESSI and had to settle for second place.

An all-around midfielder, MIKEL will be hugely missed by our first rivals from Group B. Uncapped Brown IDEYE (who plays for Sochaux in France) will be MIKEL's replacement in their World Cup squad.

As you can see...there is a trend now with Chelsea players. The more superstitious among you may even call it a curse. Will there be new 'Blue' casualties?

I couldn't be more relieved to see there are no Chelsea players in Diego's list.

He already left Chelsea a long time ago, but what about this????

Arjen ROBBEN, completely unmarked, with two minutes to go before Holland's friendly v. Hungary was over (6-1 to the Dutch), tried to play a fancy back-heel pass and fell to the floor. He is injured. He had to leave the field though he was walking with his own power.

It looked like a knee injury.

Stay tuned...

Rio Ferdinand is out of the World Cup, too.

It now seems so sensible of us not to play so many friendlies just before the real thing.

BROKEN LEG SHOCK FOR ITALY!

Though it's only Valentino ROSSI (Moto GP).

I see what you mean, Allan. Though Rio FERDINAND injured himself in training!

There are no guarantees with this kind of things. Though there are more risks at friendlies than at training sessions where you're playing with your team-mates and they won't go for the killer tackle (except your team-mate name is HEINZE! hahaha!).

The risk in not playing friendlies is to get to the World Cup and be very rusty.

If you ask me right now, then I rather arrive rusty than with a couple of injuries.

Italy have also lost Pirlo for at least the group phase, he should be ready to go for the knockout rounds.....

Seba, I fully agree with your opinion of Grondona. With the kind of amazing talent pool that has emerged from Argentina since the mid nineties, any other level headed person with vision and foresight at the helm of AFA, would have taken Argentine football to unsurmountable heights where no other footballing nation could have even dreamed of reaching. Sadly that still remains our dream and Brazil with lesser talent has achieved much more than us during the last 15 years.

you got it right....Tevez will be in the lineup with Jonas moving to right back...I think it will work. It didnt work with Aguero but I think Higuain was the missing piece. In effect, Messi or Tevez can play as the 4th midfielder if necessary in their "libro" position.

Players are going down at a rapid pace, it REALLY is scary.

Valentino ROSSI is a BOSS and will be back to the Moto GP circuit in no time!

Jack!

Hopefully the next to go down is John Terry :)

imagine a wc when every other world class player and is injured before the first game, and ALL Argentine players are fit!

and even better: all 3 goalkeepers of the other teams get injured. ok, in case of north corea two injured goalkeepers are enough, if you know what i mean.

Am I the only one who wants to see all the star players to be present at the World Cup? Come on, guys... This is the World Cup, the greatest football show on earth. I want Argentina to win it by playing great football and beating teams with great players on it. It will be more satisfying and it will leave the losing teams with no excuse... Right now, let say if England/Holland lose, they will say "well, it because of Rio didn't play" or "we will win it if Robben wasn't injured"...

Sebastian said...

Amen to that, Koma. I think exactly the same. I mean...I'm still gutted for some of the great players that couldn't help their teams to make it to South Africa or in retrospective to other World Cups.

I mean...Alfredo DI STEFANO and George BEST never played in a World Cup. It was a loss for football.

Now Zlatan IBRAHIMOVIC couldn't make it. Ryan GIGGS (never made it). One player that I use to like a lot, Jari LITMANEN (Finland), never played in a World Cup either.

And of those teams qualified for South Africa...it's pretty clear that I want them all to be at the top of their potential with their main stars around.

It's a disgrace that a player like DROGBA is almost out. A shame that we won't see Andrea PIRLO in that first match v. Paraguay.

A pity if Arjen ROBBEN was to miss out too (though I don't like him as a character and I don't particularly like his type of selfish, dribble-first-dribble-after-that-shoot-if-I-can-and-never-pass-it-to-a-team-mate kind of game).

ESSIEN is the heart and soul of Ghana and now he is out. We will never see the real potential Ghana had coming to South Africa.

BALLACK out? I love to hate him! I love to see him around and it won't be the same if we were to beat Germany without him playing.

As for Brazil, it wasn't because of the injuries that we won't see iconic stars like RONALDINHO, PATO, ADRIANO and some others. It was because of DUNGA's approach to the game. It is still a shame, though.

That's the way I see it. I hope there are no more injuries from now on.
