What now?

I can't help being in this terrible mood.

A few days have past now and the more I think about the opportunity we've lost on Sunday, the more it hurts.

Because it was our time to get revenge from the previous Copa America. It was our moment to end a period of 14 years without a trophy.

Now what? How long will we have to wait to have another shot at a title?

World Cup Qualifiers? Nah...that's a competition that goes on and on and on for like forever! Impossible to capture the attention of the whole nation and most importantly, you don't get a trophy if you top the table there...

Confederations Cup? It hurts. That's what hurts me the most. We are not going. We should have qualified for that.

I looks like our next chance of redemption will be non other than the 2010 World Cup in South Africa. A long way to go to get there.

But the worst is that, in the meantime, I don't care about AYALA signing for Zaragoza, HEINZE staying at Old Trafford or going to Real Madrid, Gabriel MILITO arriving at the Camp Nou...

I don't want to talk about it. Not now.

Yeah I was one of the people who made the mistake of thinking we were still going to the Confederations Cup (due to the special circumstances in 2005). I know it's not the same (since it's not a senior competition) but we still have the Beijing Olympics next year. Both Argentina and Brazil are competing and remember that an Olympic gold in soccer is something that our neighbors have never won before while we will go in defending ours. Let's hope our Olympic team brings it out.

Seba,
We await your recovery ! Maybe it would help if you forget everything that happened at the Copa, with the exception of the girls in the stands ! Remember, the Boston Red Sox eventually won it all, and it was sweeter for all the waiting ! So, let's hope we are the Red Sox, and not the Chicago Cubs ! Suerte !

Anonymous said...

Johnny, Boston had to wait 80+years for them to win it all and the Cubs have no won anything since the titanic. If we had won this copa america then we would of got that title and then gone after the conf cup then gone after the wc. I know Seba we are all going through withdrawl from football, it happend to me last year till Dec or so. But this withdrawl will go on for a bit longer because I will have nothing to watch!, I also can care less about la liga, clausura/apertura... It will take a long time for me to get over this. I said it a million times, without a copa america title this was a failure and yes it is a MAJOR FAILURE. Now Brasil will add another title and will go to the conf cup and etc. Only thing I have to look forward to is the U-20 games and those end soon. So many ppl trying to bust my balls@work. I think this will make the team want it a bit more. I agree with the whole wc qualif taking a decade for it finish. People say hey look on the bright side, Euro2008 is around the corner, I can care less about euro 2008, watch some sorry ass team win it again.

Great Brazil is ranked #1 now in the world and Argentina is 2. Are they throwing salt in the wound.

Anonymous said...

ur mad about that? we are lucky we even went up those 3 spots at all. im happy we are second best in the whole world after the implosion at the final.

Get 'em Gonzo. Good attitude. As for following club football, I am ready, willing and able. I will be watching Clasura/Apertura, Premier, La Liga and some Italian league matches. As a non argentine I know I can't experience the grief currently felt by many posters here. The good thing about club football is that if you lose on the weekend, you have a chance to feel better the next weekend. Plus, it's the GAME ! I love the game of football. I mean, aren't y'all excited about Davie and Posh !?:)

yeah we have club football at least.

LOL wmkeri.

(off topic) Johnny, did you see the latest blog in the Guardian about Beckham? They were interviewing his new teammates about him. http://blogs.guardian.co.uk/sport/2007/07/18/galaxys_lesser_lights_learning.html
The most disturbing part is that he is making 6.5 million a year while some of his teammates are making under $20,000. Absolutely crazy! But then again the club is paying for the image that is Beckham.

Going back to the topic at hand though. I agree with Gonzo, we went up to #2 in the rankings. That's a good thing. Sure Brazil is higher than us at the moment but we are still higher than our other rival, hehe.

AFan-interesting article on Beckham and his loot. Actually, I like Beckham. He was never the best player in the world, and a long shot from the worse. It is clear now that Capello cooked his own goose at Real Madrid when he sat Beckham for no good reason. The players in LA should thank the stars, that with Beckham there now more people will be watching them play. Of course american soccer is still a big LOSER, and will continue to be so, Beckham or no Beckham. But, it's nice that they are trying !:)

why don't we qualify for Confederations cup?

isn't it the top two from South America to qualify?

i think we are there in 2009.

Seba said...

Anonymous, have a look at this:

http://www.fifa.com/confederationcup/qualifiers/index.html

We are not in the Confederations Cup.

We were there last time around because Brazil qualified as World Cup winners (2002) and since they were Copa America winners too (2004), the runner-up (Argentina) made it as "lucky losers".

We don't even have luck on our side this time...

how much should a part time player make in MLS? He choose to play football with a 20k pay cut and clean pools on spare time to make up for the living, that's his career choice, beckham making 6.5m has nothing to do with it.

also beckham makes way more than 6.5m a year. his contract itself is 125m for 5 yrs? and he makes money from endorsements, commercials, PR tours etc. MLS bought him the same reason Real Madrid bought him, not because he's a player... and his majority income are from these '2ndary career', just like cleaning pool. except obviously a better secondary career...

The 6.5 million I quoted is what LA Galaxy is paying him (endorsements etc are not included in that sum). If you look at the article I posted all of the players are full time players. My shock had to do with the very large difference in salary. One of LA's starters makes 17,000 a year (again endorsements etc not included). It's weird to think that as a graduate student I recieve more money in my stipend (and I live in a much cheaper city). Bizarre

SEBA.
Im a venezuelan and i was right there in Maracaibo. It was 11:45pm on sunday after the disaster when I came out of my hotel room and found PATO in the hall waiting for the elevator (the team was ready to leave the country). His kid came out running and his wife was there too. After asking him for an authograph I was so nervous that all I could say was " Meen... como estan? como se han sentido?..."

His answer really made me feel a lot better (i was kind of devastated for that horrible dream)

He was sosegago and with a lot of peace of heart he said "bien... bien... no paso nada"...

For me was a perspective that it is just a game, is more what we suffer as fans than what really is up to stake. It was fun. It was a great performance of argentina during the whole cup.

The first to make a mistake in elite futbol is the one to take the weight of the rest of the game.

It was a supper copa america for all of us that had the chance to see your players give it all out.

We had great fun celebrating 16 goals of argentina and 5 of our vino tinto.

the first to make the mistake was going to take the heat.

just to let your wonder:
what where doing 4 samba drumer teams, one on each corner of the stadium...? something tell me there was another player in the field... to many mistakes where made on that first half. Almost 3 self goals and a one great GOLAZO de Ayala.

Notice that this samba drummers where not even looking at the game, they where just jammin like hell not stop during the whole time of the game. I was there I saw them.

Well As pato told me "no paso nada"

Have fun, I know is different for you.

I am still watching football here in Asia, China just lost in the Asian Cup to Uzbekistan.... if I remember right even HK didn't lose to Uzbekistan in the qualifiers... I don't feel really hurt because China always loses... it is a fact of life...

Anyway, next week HK local side South China AA will take on the mighty Liverpool FC (Mascherano et al hopefully) in the Barclays Asia Trophy. I got tickets for that and I am looking forward to it.

Also Argentina U20 is playing Chile U20 tomorrow, we must win that, we can't let anyone else touch the U20 World Cup, can we?

Seba, I feel you. Yes, it's a lost of opportunity. We brought the best team for Copa, because that's Basile's objective -- to be Copa champions. It's just the last step, it's time to make a closing statement but it felt like the final didn't exist. We've shown the world who we are, offensive and attractive team, and the world love it.

But, for this final, just do it, win the title. If Basile has to do it all over again, I bet he will do it differently.

actually i'm really interested in for whom will Roman plays next season ? do you think Boca ? coz they will have to pay the expensive loan fees to Villareal, if not, they will have to buy him. he'll surely cost a lot! what about the rumours about him going to real madrid ? i'm hoping that will happen!

Anonymous said...

dont want to burst bubles, but it looks like roman is between a rock and a hard place because hes becoming too expensive for everyones taste all of a sudden after the copa final. it all went from atleti or madrid to now either boca buys out ur deal or extends the loan or nothing. who knows tough, he is my favorite player in the argentine squad and i wish him well through thick and thin. time will tell.

though i can tell you that the real madrid rumor is rubbish, with them buying robben soon and possibly derenthe and maybe even keeping that old fool emerson around itll be too crowded for roman out there.

though wmkeri, all of a sudden real wants to do stupid shit like this:

Según informa el diario Marca en su edición de este jueves, el Real Madrid tiene en su punto de mira a Andrés Iniesta para reforzar su centro del campo tras la negativa, la semana pasada, de Cesc Fábregas de fichar por el club de la capital de España. El azulgrana gusta tanto, que en las oficinas del Santiago Bernabéu están dispuestos a pagar su cláusula de rescisión: sesenta millones de euros.

60 MILLION EURO OUT CLAUSE FOR INIESTA TO BE PAID BY REAL MADRID CLAIMS MARCA.

if this is true then dear god, save us all because that borders on retardation/ignorance. i dont care what anyone wants to tell me, roman is vastly superior to iniesta and wouldent even cost 1/3 that... christ. i seriously hope its a rubbish rumor.

You're right Allan,

I'm really hoping that our Under-20 will do something as it is getting more and more misery than ever.

Our Under-18 team at the Pan Am Games have lost 2-0 to Jamaica!!!!

I had question regarding tonights game. I can't watch it online because my laptop has been getting upset when I have video for extended periods of time (and shutting off) but I will be able to hear the game. Does anyone know which online radio stations will play the game? I speak spanish so that isn't a problem.

Vamos Argentina!

starter?

Anonymous said...

i bet they pay him under the table and on the side, just to keep everything under the cap.

Thanks soyderiver! (I think you gave me this link beforehand but I couldn't remember it).

Rios, here is one of the quotes from the article:
"Veris, a powerful central defender, has represented the first-team regularly and earns $17,700-a-year (£8,600), $100 less than his new team-mate collects in a single day."
I also looked it up on LA Galaxy's website (because the thought of an professional athlete making so little in the states is just bizarre) and they list him as a starter though one that was sidelined due to a knee injury for part of last season.
Granted they also say he is a developmental player so maybe when he finishes that he will earn more.
It's just weird...hope he has nice endorsements...

Good luck to the U20 team today!!
Vamos Argentina

o they talking about kyle veris.
he started couple games for galaxy to rest starters.

kyle veris sucks. I saw him play when penn state played ohio state couple years ago. that kid is playing soccer just so he could play. I don't doubt his enthusiasm, but he doesn't have the quality as a professional.
