Argentina v Mexico: Match coverage

WOW! I made it!
Just in time for the national anthems.

Sorry I was unable to provide you with a match preview or facts and figures.

But here we are, with Carlos TEVEZ and Nery CASTILLO both playing from the start, Argentina and Mexico will fight for a place in the final match, where Brazil is already waiting...three steps in front...just like their keeper.

VAMOS ARGENTINA!
5th minute - RIQUELME shoots from 20 yards, Oswaldo SANCHEZ saves (caught).
-------------
8th minute - ZANETTI with his first blatant mistake of the Copa America so far. He misjudged a ball that was coming from the left and GUARDADO intercepted. Then CACHO shot over the bar.
-------------
12th minute - One minute after an action in which MESSI was pulled in the area, ZANETTI made a lovely "sombrero" on a Mexican and then his left-footed effort was easily controlled by SANCHEZ.
-------------
13th minute - AYALA with a mistake that could have costed us dearly. He ends up fouling CASTILLO and Rafa MARQUEZ couldn't hit the target from the free-kick.
-------------
20th minute - TEVEZ with a great individual action, took a shot with his left but went wide.
Nice try!
-------------
35th minute - Great play by MEXICO (the best of the game so far). GUARDADO sends AYALA and ZANETTI the wrong way and then hits the post.
-------------
41st minute - One-two between TEVEZ and RIQUELME. Carlitos is face to face with the keeper but his shot is weak. VERON was waiting for it in the middle with a better angle.
-------------
44th minute - Great free kick by ROMAN and HEINZE hits it with a ninja-kick!SANCHEZ was committed but HEINZE anticipated and touched towards an empty net!Oh boy...that was a HEINZE-SEEKER MISSILE by RIQUELME! Argentina 1-0 Mexico.
---------------
Half time whistle is blown.
---------------
Second half starts...
---------------
50th minute - Ridiculous ref! MARQUEZ trips MESSI inside the area and Lionel gets a yellow for "diving"????? What the hell is that? A clear penalty, not given.
---------------
60th minute - TEVEZ sees MESSI incredibly wide open, Lionel gets inside the box and when the logic adviced to try to find TEVEZ again in the area, he defied every law that is written and softly touched the ball over the keeper for a classic goal! Argentina 2-0 Mexico.
---------------
65th minute - TEVEZ tries to go round Rafa MARQUEZ to try to take a shot, but the Barcelona defender obstructs him and the ref gives the penalty he didn't give 15 minutes before. Roman takes it better than ZIDANE in the World Cup final. Argentina 3-0 Mexico.
---------------
85th minute - All three of our substitutions are made with the last one being AIMAR in for RIQUELME. Previously, GAGO replaced VERON and PALACIO took TEVEZ's place.
FULL TIME WHISTLE.
Argentina with their fifht win in as many matches.
Brazil now. The match we've been waiting for a long time now!
Living in Brazil, this is going to be very very interesting!

Anybody there?

Just restarted the computer...

Linda said...

Hi Seba! I'm here, just too much of a bundle of nerves.

Seba said...

Same here.

I think this is a good game so far. Even the neutrals should enjoy it.

John said...

Hi Seba & Linda,

Feeling sad as I’m at my workstation right now.

I’m nervous too but not scared. Ok maybe a bit of both.

Seba said...

We look to be having a tendency to throw long balls today.

But I like the start VERON and CAMBIASSO are having. They are key for us today!

CK for MEX.

Seba said...

Welcome John!

Are you able to watch the game? Or are you relying on our updates?

Mexico looks to be the team in attack right now. But we are not allowing them to create much danger.

Anonymous said...

i am here. our defence is killing me !!

Seba said...

TEVEZ with a great individual action, took a shot with his left but went wide.

Nice try!

Anonymous said...

best chance. mexican mistake on the d. tevez missed wide right.

Seba said...

Hey soyderiver! Welcome!

Fear not! Our defensive midfield is looking good.

Anonymous said...

back injury for veron. he shakes it off. better warm up aimar!!!

John said...

Seba,

There no telling how much your updates means to me, due to the fact that I’m unable to view any streaming media sites from my office.

It allows me to do my work with a lil piece of mind……..

Anonymous said...

Hola Seba! Que tal? It was just a moment of weakness on defense. we are looking ok now.

Seba said...

Great set piece. Long cross from RIQUELME, AYALA gets to the ball on the far post and after a deflection it goes out for a corner kick.

Keeper gets it. Nothing happened.

Anonymous said...

this ref sucks! that was a yellow card that mexico got away with.

Anonymous said...

what the heck is the ref doing?? did you see him stare down roman??

Seba said...

John...the game is pretty even at the moment. Mexico is not waiting, they are sometimes coming at us.

We are holding on when that happens and we look dangerous going forward.

The problem is that I think they are winning the midfield battle.

Anonymous said...

we are playing way too many long balls. our lack of creatativity is going to kill us. we need crisper passes.

Seba said...

CASTILLO looking sharp. But so far, he is not passing the ball to his team-mates and all the danger he creates, is not serious.

Seba said...

late tackle by VERON. yellow card

Seba said...

35th minute - Great play by MEXICO (the best of the game so far). GUARDADO sends AYALA and ZANETTI the wrong way and then hits the post.

Anonymous said...

Oh man. the mex keeper is having a great game. Now I'm getting scared!!

Seba said...

41st minute - One-two between TEVEZ and RIQUELME. Carlitos is face to face with the keeper but his shot is weak. VERON was waiting for it in the middle with a better angle.

John said...

Hit the post!!!!!

Seba said...

The way I see it, Mexicans are running A LOT.

They won't be able to keep it up for 90 minutes.

GOOOOOOOOOOOOOAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAL!

John said...

I knew the game was going to be pretty even.

It has always been when we play against the Mexicans

Anonymous said...

Golazo!!!!!!!!

heize off a riquelme free kick. What a nice touch!

Seba said...

Great free kick by ROMAN and HEINZE hits it with a ninja-kick!

SANCHEZ was committed but HEINZE anticipated and touched towards an empty net!

Oh boy...that was a HEINZE-SEEKER MISSILE by RIQUELME!

Rio said...

who was behind heinze when ppl were bitching at him? :D

John said...

Ahhh!!! What a relief :-)

Anonymous said...

Vamos HEINZE!! Fucking Line is lagging..but doesnt matter..i can see glimpses of the goal

Anonymous said...

Well said John!! I feel much better now.

Heh, Rio wasnt me. I was against veron and riquelme. Roman is making me eat my words however.

Seba said...

Half time

Argentina 1-0 Mexico

Anonymous said...

Seba my dad said the same thing, it is only a 90min game, so no ET, argentina needs to start playing better. They can easily be down 1-0 rigt now, the defense is asleep. I am still a bit worried about the game.

Seba said...

For the record, I don't change my opinion on HEINZE.

Today...he is making me happy, though!

Anonymous said...

Who ever is touching the ball for Argentina two people are on them, two on the wings for Messi and Tevez. Since Mexico is down now, I wonder if the game will open up. I hope and prey Argentina does not play 10 man back in the last 20 min of the game. I do not want this game to go to PK's.

Linda said...

YES! And welcome, Rio.

Anonymous said...

i tell you what though. good thing guardado doesnt have a right foot or he would have scored for sure. we need to be quicker in the midfield. mexico is bringing it from thier goal to ours way too fast!

Rio said...

so far the only offensive element mexico isn't pulling out is its wingbacks

i think hugo about to tell them to push. let's get a 2nd goal!

Anonymous said...

The Mexican's are cheap football players, they play a ugly style and all they do is counter attack. They play like punks, and that is why Mexico is a joke and will never win nothing.

Seba said...

soyderiver...I think GUARDADO missed that goal because he is a great player. If he wasn't, he would have taken a higher percentage shot. He went for the sweet finish and it hit the post.

Of course...this means HEINZE is better! As he went for the ninja-kick and he scored! hahaha!

Rio said...

ya, the mexicans are playing really dirty. but ref not going to give cards unless they pull big movements, i just hope our players don't get injured when they do.

Anonymous said...

A 2nd goal will be something that will kill the spirit of the Mexicans. I hope Argentina does get a 2nd goal and puts more preasure on the Mexicans.

John said...

Okay Rio, you made your point

But there is no need to talk about our difference now as we need to stand unite and see ourselves through to the final.

We can do it!!! I know we can!!!

Seba said...

I don't agree with anonymous on that definition of Mexico.

I think they didn't play for the counter attack. In fact, they attacked us!

Now I don't think Argentina will sit back and wait for the game to end. That's not BASILE's bread and butter.

Of course he will try and get advantage from Mexico's desperation to score (as the game progresses).

Great chance for MESSI and CARLITOS to make the most out of the wing-backs (that will be attacking more).

ROMAN: Get your pencil ready and draw us some architectonic passes!

Rio said...

john :D

we didn't play for 20 minutes, so by 20 minutes into second half if no goals from either side, basile should start switching to 4-2-3-1.

Anonymous said...

Could be Seba, could be. He is a great player for sure. He and Castillo have been real dangerous. As long as we can stop them from linking up, we should be ok.

We just need to go for the second goal. we have it us for sure.

Anonymous said...

Brilliant kick by HEINZE.

Don't care much for the Mexicans dirty tactics, but they have looked dangerous.

INSURANCE GOALS ARE A MUST!

Rio said...

mexican are lobing the ball over mascher's zone cuz they can't get through that zone on foot. so in a way they're playing counter. they put pressure on us to set mascher's zone just within their lob range.

Rio said...

so we should put gago in and thicken that zone sometime soon.

Seba said...

Top3 Ratings of the first half?

Mine goes to:

MASCHE
ROMAN
HEINZE (not only for the score. He is playing a good game overall).

Yours?

John said...

Mr. Anonymous,

I do feel that your statement like that is very much not welcomed at Mundo Albiceleste.

Sorry guys, just thought I had to say this

Rio said...

masch tevez heinze=zanetti

if zanetti and tevez processed their chances better man...

Anonymous said...

Mexico is coming out with 2 offensive changes. Argentina comes out unchanged.

cacho and torrado out for mexico.

bravo and medina in.

Unknown said...

for whatever it is, I'm still a fan of Riquelme. A great player doesn't need to sparkle all the time, but at the right time. Have u guys imagined Argentina this tournament w/o Riquelme?

Seba said...

Rio...I agree with that substitution (sending GAGO to join MASCHE).

Only if they don't play as DOBLE 5 (two defensive midfielders in the middle).

That will give MASCHE less ground to cover and it will limit him a lot.

MASCHE needs to patrol that zone on his own.

Of course he can use more support as the going gets tough, but not in the middle. He will need someone to watch the flanks. CAMBIASSO & VERON or CAMBIASSO & GAGO.

Linda said...

I abide by something I call the 'Karma Rule' - never insult a team until you've finished beating them, lest it comes back to bite you in the ass. :-)

Very useful.

(e.g. One US blogger ranted up a storm about Messi before they played us. Ha.)

Seba said...

THanks soyderiver for your info on the Mexican subs.

John, don't worry about that offensive comment towards Mexico. I have deleted it. Thanks for keeping an eye on it.

Free-kick for Mexico. Hard foul by MASCHE on BRAVO.

He got away without a yellow!

Anonymous said...

we need to stay on feet. way too much tackling.

Seba said...

Truong, you are very true, man!

However, I do imagine Argentina without him.

The thing is, the way he makes it look, you wouldn't think it is possible to play without a player like him.

He MAKES the team play the way HE wants.

Not many players can do that and get results at the same time.

He is even our top-scorer in this Copa!

Seba said...

Ridiculous ref!

MARQUEZ trips MESSI inside the area and Lionel gets a yellow for "diving"?????

What the hell is that!

A clear penalty, not given.

Anonymous said...

wtf is up with the ref?? that was not a dive. rafa hit him, maybe not hard enough to fall but he did hit him.

Linda said...

Pfft. Messi is suffering because of his (undeserved) reputation of cheating.

By the way, Gabi Milito is a blaugrana as of today! Apparently he'll be first choice, so welcome and congratulations Gabi.

Seba said...

Rafa lifted his leg to try and stop him.

Not a hard contact but MESSI couldn't continue running.

The ref didn't want to take the responsibility so the easy thing was to book MESSI.

Bullshit!

Rio said...

OMG the unibrow almost scored

Seba said...

CASTILLO hits the bar!

Oh God!

We should be 2-0 and this could have been Mexico's equalizer.

Anonymous said...

nice play by castillo. we got lucky. defenese needs to step up!!!

Seba said...

Did you see how HEINZE ruined our attack and now we are forced to defend again (when we were in clear possession).

He took the eyes off the ball.

Linda said...

Oh God. At this rate I'm going to have a heart attack soon.

Rio said...

how can there be no card!

Rio said...

this is fucking child molestation!

Seba said...

A little bit more spaces now.

I would like to see that ball control.

I LOVE YOU MESSI!

What a fighter! You need three guys to stop him!

Free kick for us. Near the corner flag in the left.

Seba said...

What a lovely up-in-the-air back heel by CAMBIASSO, the ball almost got to MESSI.

Argentina is growing with ball possession now.

Mexico committing a lot of fouls now...but no cards are being shown.

Rio said...

we got 10 minutes of running left. if no 2nd goal or equalizer by then I wanna see some defensive

Seba said...

I think that writing as I watch the game is kind of a therapy!

I need it. I don't have candy, so I type!

COME

QUE GOLAZOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

Rio said...

i take it back

Rio said...

holy shit, what a pass by roman

Seba said...

OH!!!! I'm so tempted to give MESSI a 10/10 only because of that gem!

WHAT A GOAL!

Linda said...

Everyone talks as if Messi's never been treated roughly before this tournament, when he's been getting kicked hard all season in Spain, and it's never bothered him in the least.

They'll hit him hard, but he'll be alright.

Anonymous said...

Messi is a * * * * * * * * *. WOW

,Jakc

Linda said...

Oh my God.

Rio said...

the beautiful part is

mexico used 2 of their sub to switch into offense. now they can't defend!

Anonymous said...

MESSI!!!!!!

Anonymous said...

Messi goal . wow. that is why this is the beautiful game.

Seba said...

I'm still shaking my head in disbelief...

PENALTY KICK FOR US!

Foul on CARLITOS!

COME ON!

Rio said...

this is like beating a dead fish now

Anonymous said...

I think Juan Roman RIQUELME is the PLAYER OF THE TOURNAMENT..wihout a doubt..He is BACK and hope BACK FOR GOOD..stay on for 2010 ROMAN!!

Seba said...

ROMAN will take it

Rio said...

roman wants score leader

Seba said...

Son of a bitch! What a class!!!!

Superb!

5th goal for him in this COPA!

3-0!

For those not watching, ROMAN just floated the ball. The keeper went to his right and the ball took like 53 minutes to get to the goal.

A lovely team celebration, I must add!

Seba said...

Roman is one short from ROBINHO for the top-scorer prize.

I'll make a confession here...

I'M IN LOVE WITH MESSI!

Anonymous said...

Cheeeeeky YOU ROMAN!!! I love it!!

Linda said...

Hahaha awesome from Roman.

And of course, Messi is forever. Or he should be.

Seba said...

The "ole" have started!

Argentina passing the ball around. Mexico now having trouble even to get to our player in possession. When they do...they simply foul him!

John said...

I'm on leave from work for the FINAL!!!!

YEEEAAAHHHH!!!!!!

We Want More!!!!

Seba said...

I love this!

Brazilian commentator (now not rooting so much for Mexico. Like they have given up):

"Argentina will be the favorite on Sunday"

Thinking like if Brazil were the Faroe Islands!

Linda said...

I agree with John: more goals, please!

(If only because I really want Roman to beat Robinho to top scorer.)

Seba said...

Another one from Brazilian commentator:

"My Brazilian brother, you better get your heart ready for Sunday!"

SWEEEEEEEEET!

Anonymous said...

Who isn't in love with MESSI? Haha..i doubt there is no one

Rio said...

subs?

Seba said...

The thing is this, Linda...we will all know that ROBINHO scored 5 of his 6 goals against Chile!

Played twice against them and the second one was with half of the Chile team still with head-aches from a night out with drinks and chicks! hahahaha!

Roman scored in every game he played (didn't play against Paraguay).

And ROBINHO is a forward, while Roman is a midfielder.

His job is to assist and he must be the assists leader too!

He has one today, that one for MESSI against Peru, one against the USA...I can't keep count!

Seba said...

15 minutes to go.

No subs yet.

It can't be too long before we see our first one.

Oh...there's COCO pointing at the bench!

Seba said...

VERON is off.

GAGO takes his place.

Anonymous said...

I am convinved Messi is the best player in the world. Gago for veron.
Palacio for tevez.

Seba said...

TEVEZ replaced by PALACIO

Very intelligent subs.

PALACIO could kill them in the counter-attacks.

Seba said...

BOY! First one he touches, sends it over.

MESSI gave PALACIO a perfect assist. Should have been a goal.

Anonymous said...

yes good subs. palacio almost scored already! I really wanted tevez to get a goal though. he deserves one.

Anonymous said...

Now that gago is in, does this mean mascherano is going to score???

Aimar is coming in, pobably for riquelme.

Seba said...

TEVEZ is saving the best for Sunday! ;)

Anonymous said...

i hope so seba, i hope so.

Linda said...

So Brazil gets an extra day of rest, but they won't have their captain Gilberto Silva. Wonder if that will make Dunga use a more creative midfielder instead.

Anonymous said...

The perfect Final is on the cards now, can't get any bigger than this!!

Our defense has not conceeded in 3 games already..and we score for fun,all pointing for good things to come.. to finally end the draught since 1993.

Seba said...

DUNGA must be thinking of coming back from retirement!!!! hahahaha!

Full time!

What a comprehensive win!

Anonymous said...

thats game!! brazil is next.

Anonymous said...

Missed the game, can somebody tell me what happend? THANKS!!!!!

,Jack!

Anonymous said...

The pople that were giving me a hard time@ work lol, now tmrr under my tucked in shirt@ work I will wear my Le Coq Sportif Maradona jersey from Argentina! And little by little I will button my dress shirt down and show the fellow guys in green. Now lets go beat Brasil and win Copa America.

Seba said...

Jack...to make it simple...you've missed one of the most sensational goals ever scored for Argentina that I remember.

Very even first half but Argentina thrashed Mexico in the second.

MESSI and ROMAN were mercurial.

Read up the play by play and you'll pretty much relive the game.

Linda said...

To put this performance into perspective, Mexico have been one of the teams of the tournament so far. They didn't just come out to defend, either.

Now the dream final for neutrals, and hopefully revenge.

Unknown said...

Couldn't have asked for a better performance. Did not panic when Mexico had a grip on the game in the first half and after that first goal the whole complexion of the game changed.
That being said the big test awaits on Sunday. Keeping aside all the love i have for this Argentinian juggernaut just for a moment i think even a neutral would agree when i say that Argentina have been the better of the two finalists up to this point of the tournament. this however would not count for much in the final as we need to outplay the traditional South American finals without any complacencies.

Would like to ask Seb,will Veron and Sorin ever play together in an Argentinian team?

Seba said...

Saurabh...the answer is NO.

Unless SORIN improves dramatically. But he doesn't seem to be on COCO's plans.

Seba said...

Jack! What a lovely pic! hahahaha!

All the class in the World!

Roman and MESSI are sure learning a lot from Gab!

Hey Seba, I have a question for you. How do you think Batigol would of done in a team like this?

,Jack!

Seba said...

Well...Argentines are never happy with our team. No matter if we win like we did Today or not.

So...if BATI was playing these days, BASILE would have consider him to play alongside MESSI, giving TEVEZ no room. Kind of how we started our tournament here. With CRESPO and without CARLITOS.

Regardless of this...Bati would have score a lot of goals anyway. Just like he did!

Saurabh Bhattacharjee said...

A very good game against a good team that came at us instead of just sitting back. I think the team adapted well. The defence stood out really well except for the few lapses of concentration on part of Ayala, Zannetti and Heinze on one occasion each. They must stay focussed the entire length of the final.

Whatever you say about Messi' goal would be less. It was really incredible.

And cheeky from Roman too. I lost the ball for a second during the penalty before I saw it in the net.

And glad to have one more Saurabh on the blog. Which part of India are you from?

johnny said...

Great match tonight ! Everybody stepped up, though Ayala struggled a little. What was the deal when he took a nap ? Continued wonderful play from Roman, Messi et al. Even Veron was more involved and looked a little less tight. Cambiasso played well. Of course Masche. I didn't buy the Messi penalty. Not worth a yellow card though. I also don't think the Mexicans played dirty. Jeez, if that was dirty, what would you call the Colombians ?! I give the Mexicans credit for coming to play. Their midfield defense was smart and tough, and with a little luck with the two palos it could have been a real nailbiter. I would like to change Messi's nickname to the Atomic Waterbug. He skitters across the pitch like he is walking on water. I note that superstitious Coco is wearing the same shirt and coat. We can expect to see the same ensemble Sunday.

Anonymous said...

Yay!!! I'm am so thrilled that we won!!! I just caught up with the blog. You guys are awesome.

Messi's goal was gorgeous, so gorgeous. I love Messi too.

Yay Heinze scored! Don't you love it when players who aren't used to getting goals score?

Riquelme's penalty was crazy! I almost couldn't watch it because almost every time I've seen him take a penalty he has missed.

I'm so happy I can ignore the defensive mistakes!

Now we have the final. Vamos Argentina!!

-argentinafan

P.S Sorry I have nothing constructive to say. Though did anyone else see the bat on the field? What is with all the flying creatures? Last game it was butterflies and now a bat!

Seba said...

Apparentely, the Brazilian defense are going to need all the bats they can get, if they want to stop MESSI!

baseball bats, that is!

Anonymous said...

Argentina is peaking, but was this the game we peaked@?. I know guys, seems like I am never happy however I am thrilled about today's win. Argentina needs to go and play another great game. I heard Gilbert Silva is out, is that true? I am a bit worried about Robinho, he is a bit of a diver and will probably do a dive and try to get a PK. However Argentina has scored 16 in 5 games and only allowed 3 goals, all in the first round. So kudos!
