Congratulations to Juan Martin del Potro and Argentinians! it is great to see a South American hold the USO Championship trophy - after playing such a powerful, revealing, BIG GAME that i always thought he could excite people with since I saw him a few years ago on TV. I was waiting for so long for another south american, like Gabriela Sabatini and Guillermo Vilas to also hold Grand Slam Championships. Del Potro played wonderfuly and showed something ELSE that everyone should admire everywhere:
He played a BIG GAME fitting a GIANT...but his demeanor and behavior is without arrogance. it is quietly confident - like my old favorite Sampras - but is respectful of himself and his audience. HE is a credit to Argentina and all south americans!

Bilardo takes over Argentina squad while Maradona attends spa

Buenos Aires - Carlos Bilardo has been put in charge of Argentina's national team in the absence of Diego Maradona, who is in Italy attending a spa, the national football federation said Tuesday. Bilardo, who led Argentina to the 1986 title and is currently assistant to Maradona, will prepare the squad until the coach's expected return next week.

The under-fire Maradona is believed to be trying to lose weight, but his absence comes at a crucial time for the national side which is struggling to qualify for the 2010 World Cup finals in South Africa.

The federation said the 48-year-old former playing great was attending the spa on his doctor's advice. Maradona suffered serious ill health and weight gain after retiring from football, and in 2005 had a stomach stapling operation to help control his weight problem.

Argentina football federation media director Ernesto Cherquis Bialo confirmed to German Press Agency

It was offtopic to post it here and on top of that, that article is extremely inaccurate. BILARDO has not been put in charge of the national team. They just met (as Mundo Albiceleste has been announcing over the last couple of days) with GRONDONA and the rest of the coaching staff, while Diego was away.

heeeheee. Dearest Craighickman!!! yes i do . i.ve been pre-occupied (thinkingwise, really) with other "stuff" , hehe..i almost wasn't following tennis much until the USO came, lol. but I thought , upon seeing this blog's link - the Argentians and Del Potro and south americans REALLY have something to congratulate them with after such a long time, isn't it? I've read your premonitions or predictions and , as USUAL, they've come up just as you pointed out long ago. you SHOULD have been BETTING on those!!! lol.

anyway - CONGRATS again to the newest addition to Majors holders...JUAN MARTIN DEL POTRO . it was a FINE, FINE run ..and very nice to see how GENTLE he behaved throughout, whether in points lost in games, under pressure, or cusp of winning and finally having won.

I alwsys thought of him as like "the GENTLE GIANT" . hehe
