And your first probable lineup to face URU is...

...brace yourselves! We're in for a bumpy (and very uncomfortable) ride in the Centenario Stadium on Wednesday.

Because it looks like MARADONA will be picking the following starting eleven (whether you believe it or not, that's another matter. By the way...I can't believe this. I already feel like throwing my computer out the window. That's how angry I am at reading this):

ROMERO

OTAMENDI as a right back (yes, never played there with Argentina. Not his natural position)

SCHIAVI (getting another chance after looking so completely out of his league against a pretty poor Peruvian side at home, even when Perú were missing their best three strikers)

DEMICHELIS (still not completely match-fit after his surgery and with only a handful of minutes against Perú to be accounted for in the last 70 days).

HEINZE as left-back (he's like Freddy KRUGER or something. He refuses to 'die'. He keeps coming back for more. He keeps tormenting me instead of tormenting the opposition's forwards. FORLAN and SUAREZ must be laughing with a flask and a mate in their hands by looking at the defensive unit we will be using for this crucial WCQ decider).

But there's more. Hold on because there's more!

MASCHERANO will probably play out of position and he will be used as a right midfielder instead of playing in the middle of the park.

VERON and BRAÑA will be playing in the middle instead. Nice...so...BRAÑA gets a full international debut in the worst possible stage I could imagine. Great!

Jonas GUTIERREZ will be back playing as a left midfielder.

Up front?

MESSI and HIGUAIN will be the partners.

So...to summarise, here are the eleven names:

ROMERO
OTAMENDI-SCHIAVI-DEMICHELIS-HEINZE

MASCHERANO-VERON-BRAÑA-GUTIERREZ

MESSI-HIGUAIN

Some other thoughts....

Great! We have no creative players in midfield. All workhorses with the exception of VERON who could provide some good through balls for MESSI and/or HIGUAIN but I'm afraid he'll be asked to work more on the defensive aspects rather than commanding our offense from midfield.

Amazing! We'll be trying to stop the supersonic FORLAN and SUAREZ with the old carriage that is SCHIAVI, the liability that comes out from everyone of HEINZE's pores, the inexperienced, out-of-position-unproven OTAMENDI and the notably unfit and out of form DEMICHELIS. Life is great!

Fantastic! Our four probable defenders are all natural centre-backs! Are you saying we have no natural left-backs or right-backs in the entire nation?

Cool! MESSI and HIGUAIN will be the next victims if they fail to provide some goals! MARADONA will be burning them and the not-so-knowledgeable fans and members of the media will begin to think PALERMO is better than those two, but none of them will see that they will be incredibly isolated having to find a way through the Uruguay defense all by themselves.

Terrific! As Tim VICKERY mentioned it in his latest blog for BBC, no team have scored more goals at home than Uruguay!

Sensational! Our record away from home in this WCQ is: 1 win (Venezuela away), 2 draws (Brazil -do you believe it???- and Perú -do you believe it???-) and 5 defeats (Colombia, Chile, Bolivia, Ecuador and Paraguay).

Shocking! I believe we have no other choice but to depend on what Chile can do against Ecuador. The good news is that BIELSA is not the kind of manager that will be happy to drop points. He'll go for it and he is probably the most honest, fair-playing manager in World football. Based on form from both, Chile and Ecuador, logic says that should at worst be a draw, but the home team are clear favourites there.

Any of you out there feel a little less pessimistic?

Any of you can find a reason for me to cheer up a little bit?

Any of you feel even more negative than me?

I saw that lineup posted on tv today and was hoping it was a joke. Seba-I know this is a stupid question, but what can Maradona be thinking ? Is he looking to play all defense, with a poor defense at that, and hope Messi or Higuain get lucky and score a goal or two ? For me, this lineup is the worst of both worlds-not dangerous, with poor support for the forwards, coupled with a completely off the wall, make-shift defense populated by out of position players ! Absolutely horrifying ! It's as if Maradona is saying-we are desperate, but I will come up with this ridiculous line up that will save us ! Look at me ! Look at what a genius I am to be able to move all these players around and come up with a winning formula ! What insanity !

This is absolutely ridiculous. Where is Aimar and Di Maria? The first half of the game with Peru produced loads of chances. If only this is a trick and he announces a real line up right before the game...wtf?

Anonymous said...

seriously when i just saw this line up,i almost had heart atack,in fact it was more painful than the Peru's last minute goal.wtf is he thinking!!!lets face it we dont deserve to be in WORLD CUP with this f***ed up mentality.

sorry guys for been that negative but thats my honest opinion on that.

I am not surprised by this line up at all...i thought he was going to do something like this with palermo in for higuan...so in the aspect not as bad but nonetheless disgusting...chile is is our only hope...

Victor said...

I have nothing to say. I am mad. If anything di maria and aimer deserve deserve to be in the squad THAN ANY other player (except romero). I thought since veron was coming back we will see something in the midfield like aimar-veron-mascherano-dimaria... thats what i hoped for. sounded amazing. but if maradona puts up this line-up. and WE DO NOT WIN (because he better know what the hell he is doing to screw up a lineup this badly). Then i will hate him forever as a coach. And will join the ranks of the others that want him sacked immediatly

Seba, what do you think about Mascherano and co begging the Peruvians to take it easy. Any stories like that going around back home? I can not believe it, makes me so angry that they were telling them to take it easy.

We are going to be thrashed 3-0 by Uruguay. Maybe I should put some money on it, at least then I won't feel so bad when I collect the pay-out.

We need Chile to do us a favor and beat or tie Ecuador. No way are we going to Uruguay and get a win. With this lineup, if I could bend over and kiss my ass goodbye I would but I cant.

i just feel extremely sorry for alot of aour players they dont deserve this.what can the players do when the manager is too stupid.

thats why RIQUELME Quited because he knew from the first minute that MARADONA was stupid.

i hate RIQUELME, he Quit he should never get near the national team ,but in the other hand i start to like him now (he proved the point to me he was right) he won the battle with mardona.

i just wished some of our players had guts like RIQUELME,and publicly say he is not a coach at all he is clueless,he is still a drug addick.

So maybe everybody should really apologize to Roman. Diego was likely to play him out of position like everybody else. Roman did not like it and well that was that.

i like the thinking of the lineup , i would b very cautios as Maradona in this game,...i would even do a 5 line in the back.

salvio supporter said...

Hhaha I wonder if Maradona believes a 4-4-2 is good just because he won one friendly match against Scotland playing like this.

Batigol9 said...

it's suicidal and Veron totally sucks I can't see him doing anything but a few flashy passes in the first 10 minutes and then fade away.it's gonna be ugly to watch at 2 am in the morning probably will take Thursday as a sick leave ...lol

Mohd said...

man is this true????

Otemendi is too slow to play as a right-back ! same as heinzi.
Shiavi...what to say...

but what really blows me away are two things:
1. leaving Di Maria out ????!!!??!?!

2. one more time starting with a player for the first time: Brana. Did maradona learn nothing from the horrible Enzo Perez experience.

and whether veron or mascherano play as a right midfielder, then brace yourselves for a performance that will be more funny than the best episode of Friends!!

King Aguero said...

I think hes going for a draw with 4 central defenders he wants to pack the defense.

But I just hate to see Aimar/Di Maria being left out after their sensational performance

Absolutely no surprise knowing Maradona. Surprised that once such a great footballer does not even understand basic tactics. Uruguay must be the happiest team now. And all Messi critics have another opportunity to rip him. After reading argentine press reports I feel really sad that Messi is part of the current Argentina team. Masherano is in the worst form of his life, Veron has never performed for argentina even at his peak, Gutirez is a race horse and not a footballer and Brana must be wondering what sin he has done to be exposed in such a key game. With this mid field if we have one or two shots on the goal it will be a miracle. Our defenders have no talent to hold and pass the ball. Everytime Heinze or Schiavi touch the ball heartbeat just shoots up. Never know when Heinze would slip. Demichellis is coming of an injury. If you noticed the goal that Peru scored. Dimichellis was neither man marking nor covering the goal. Otamandi has his own history.

Still being an eternal optimist just praying (has Maradona influence caught up on me) that a miracle happens and we qualify. Will get peaceful sleep only on the day Maradona resigns. I am shocked that a football loving country like Argentina has turned blind to what is going on and the press is celebrating Palermo's goal. In the first place they should have questioned what the heck was the tactics adopted by Maradona after the first goal was scored and why the hell did Palermo come in ahead of Tevez or Aguero. If the same pressure would have continued we would have had atleast 1 or 2 more goals.

Also why does Maradona always pick up injured European based players. What the hell was Lucho called up for if he cannot even make it to the sub bench.

Cannot get more frustrating than this. If Maradona is going to continue as the coach I hope that tomorrow is the last match of Argentina in this world cup qualifier/Final. Just better to face the disappointment now then to be made an ass in front of the whole world.

Chile please save us!!

salvio supporter said...

I agree with King Agüero, he's probably going for a draw. But in that case, there should be just three midfielders and five deffenders. It's quite obvious, that's aaks' idea.

Would like to know your view on what better Messi can do in the current set up? Some of the questions that keeps haunting me are:
1. Can he ever influence a game with 3-4 defenders on him everytime he has the ball.
2. Will his passes ever be productive with the current team or are his passes not upto Argentina standard or are others not keeping pace with him?
3. Is he not creating the space on the left drawing away defenders
4. Is the expectation in Argentina that he has to score evertime he has a shot? Would Maradona at his peak have done that?
5. Is he at fault for not getting the right ball from the midfielders or are the midfielders incapable of delivering the ball rightly to him?

Just a few questions that just keeps coming up again and again.
Would love to hear from you and others

I am just hoping for the sake of football that Messi does not have an idenity crisis like what Mascherano is going through today. You rightly pointed out the back heel that he played leading to Peru's goal. That is not the Mascherano all of us know. Just the pressure has got on him,

Thanks

Hey guys, cool down, take it easy okay..

All of the noise is just that we as "mere mortals that could not comprehend the genius" of Maradona.. he he..

Try to look at this two situations:

(A) The anti-football Argentina team managed to reach the final of WC 1990.
(B) The fantastic flying team under Jose Pekerman flopped at WC 2006 quarter final.

Maybe Maradona is trying to build the 1990 team. Remember, we are only mere mortals...

We can not try to defend for an entire game, it just does not work that way. We will have Veron trying to rip apart Uruguay. Do not forgot he is a big game player, forgetting Copa Lib final by any chance? Look Uruguay is the team that needs the win, they will be exposed. And if we manage to score first then watch out. But again, a tie is good enough for us, Uruguay is the team that needs the win. So they will push forward, but but but we need to catch them when they are not looking. We need Higuain,Messi and Veron to play a sublime game.

King Aguero said...

regarding the Messi situation i have a couple of points id like to make.

1. You can't throw in a group of players in a crucial match and expect them to turn into Barcelona!

2. We play with a different midfield almost every game.

3. Mascherano, Jonas, and almost evry other midfielder that has been used before the game vs Peru have nothing to do with distributing or making plays.

4. There are a couple of players that can distribute and link well with Messi like Bolatti, Banega, Pastore, Aimar but how many of those actually played with him on the NT?

5. I dont care if hes the best player in the world or the best player in human history this is a team sport and no player can turn anything around without using his teammates.

6. Hands down Messi is the best player in the world and arguebly the best talent in the world.

7. Unfortunately Argentina have the worst coac in the world and his line-ups should speak volumes.

8. Untill this team starts playing like a team and a coach is being in charge of the team then even if you have Messi, Ronaldo, Kaka on the same team things won't change oh by the way we already have 2 of the best 10 players in the world on the team Messi/Aguero. We already have one of the best 10 defenders in the world Samuel, and finally we do have one of the best playmakers in the world Riquelme but we use Heinze, Veron (34), Palermo, Tevez :>:> Ironic?

Seba..all i can say is it ain't over till its over. It's 11 against 11.

If you realize, these are just the voices from the silence of your heart and many of us here can say anything in the world and nothing will change.

Don't stop believing, never give up and stick by the team through thick and thin. I hope you are wrong in every single aspect of what you said and trust me, you will be hoping you are wrong too so that we can make it to the world cup. All for the love of the game.

Cheers Mate.

guys,

maybe you would call me crazy, but the way i see it, the best scenario for the Albicelestes is the following:
--Chile beat Ecuador
--URGUAY HAMMER ARGENTINA LIKE HELL. I mean beat them with 5-6 goals. A beating that will be so humiliating that Maradona will be sacked or forced to resign. then we will go the play offs with a new coach and with a real possibility of winning the WC!

This is truly my only wish. because if we manage to get to the playoffs and to the WC with maradona, then prepare yourself for one hell of a humiliating tournament.

Menotti:

"The team has not yet reached the level that was expected. The Argentina side have not had a coach for a long time," he continued.

"Not because they do not know how to, but because they are not able to because there is not enough time as all the players are in Europe.

"You cannot direct a great orchestra if the musicians are in Roma and the conductor is in Buenos Aires."

I luv the 2nd paragraph! thank you Menotti

ok so many negative comments and predictions, i have to say something positive: Argentina will at least take a draw against Uruguay and reach the needed 4th place.

now you can ask on which facts this optimism is based.

well, i don't have the knowledge the most people have about football and argentine players. i was also unable to see the games, only the highlights on youtube. so maybe i don't realize how bad they really played. but i still say i have no doubts they will qualify.
