Champions League – Kun Inspires Atletico To Victory

After going down to Schalke in their first leg encounter, Atletico Madrid were desperate to have Kun AGUERO back from Beijing for their second leg. After all, Atletico never went against his desire to go to the Olympics.

Winning the gold medal would have been the biggest motivation for him to help them overcome their 1-0 loss. This is exactly what he did.

In return, Kun inspired them with a Man of the Match performance against the German side to seal their place in the Champions League group stage. First he scored in 22nd minute to level the score on aggregate. In the second half, he provides an assist for both Diego FORLAN and Luis GARCIA to increase Atletico's lead. A penalty from Maxi RODRIGUEZ in the 87th minute sealed the game for Atletico to win 4-0 (4-1 on aggregate).Fernando BELLUSCHI was the other Argentine player to score in the same round, in Olympiacos 1-0 win over Cypriot side Anorthosis Famagusta. However the result was enough for the Greek side as Anorthosis won 3-1 on aggregate.Javier MASCHERANO's Liverpool also made it through courtesy of an extra time goal from Dirk KUYT against Belgian side Standard Liege.

Mario SANTANA & Fiorentina are also through despite the goalless draw with Slavia Prague as they have won the first leg 2-0.

Hello All

See that's what I am talking about in previous comments, you cannot let one tournament judge a performance of a player, maybe Beijing was not the best plays of Kun but look at him go again now.

You’re right Mohamed about not to judge a player on just one tournament. However you must understand that Kun had an outstanding season with Atletico so it does puzzle all of us here on what happened in Beijing.

The most important thing for me is that he turned when it really matters (against Brazil) and you can’t ignore that part of his contribution.

Some news from US Open…

Maximo GONZALEZ must have felt about his chances against an erratic form Roger FEDERER. But FEDEX was still FEDEX as GONZALEZ lost in straight sets 3-6, 0-6 & 3-6.

Also out in the first round is Eduardo SCHWANK after his defeat to Russian Dmitry TURSUNOV 5-7, 6-4, 5-7 & 6-7.

Agustin CALLERI was the only player from the Albiceleste Camp that made it through to the second round, as he won his game against Austin KRAJICEK 6-2, 6-2 & 6-1.
