Diego MILITO steals the show from MESSI

I swear I'm not being biased towards Diego MILITO here. You can ask anybody who watched Inter beat Barcelona 3-1 on Tuesday and they'll surely tell you I'm right in saying he was the difference-maker at the Giuseppe Meazza stadium.

Even without watching the match, by just taking a look at the stats you'll have enough information to prove me right: Diego MILITO - 1 goal and 2 assists.

It was a strange game. It looked like Barcelona had the edge and were about to demolish Inter when MAXWELL went past Esteban CAMBIASSO and then crossed to PEDRO who scored a little bit before the 20-minute mark. 1-0 to Barcelona and the very important away-goal already in the bag for the Catalans.

But Inter reacted. It's true that Diego MILITO missed a couple of good chances but the third, he wasn't going to let it go. He didn't take it himself. Instead, he controlled a ball that came through the floor from the right (courtesy of ETO'O) and surrounded by three Barcelona defenders, he unselfishly decided to pass it wide to the left for an open Wesley SNEJDER who scored past Víctor VALDES.

That was the score after the first half and Inter came out strong in the second. Determined to win it.

Only three minutes into the second half, Lionel MESSI had the ball on the right in an attacking position. In my opinion, he was clearly fouled. He even stood still thinking the ref gave him a free-kick. Instead, the referee waved play on and that really hit Barcelona because on the counter-attack, MILITO was launched on the right and he wrapped the ball as a present for MAICON to score Inter's second of the night.

Barcelona kept going forward (as they always do) and Inter hit them again. Only this time, the Italians made the Blaugranas taste a little bit of their own medicine. Why? Because Thiago MOTTA did what GUARDIOLA's men always do. He recovered the ball very near the opposing area and then fed it to ETO'O, who crossed it for SNEJDER to head it towards Diego MILITO (who was in an offside position) and the rest was history.

MESSI was pretty much controlled throughout the entire game. He did force Julio CESAR into making a great save and then won a header in the box that almost turns into a glorious assists for PIQUE, but between Julio CESAR and LUCIO they prevented the former Manchester United defender from scoring.

The other Argies?

As some of you are pointing out, Javier ZANETTI was sublime. He started as a left-back and never had a problem with PEDRO and/or MESSI. Then MAICON got injury (colliding with MESSI) and as CHIVO got introduced by MOURINHO, Il Capitano was sent to play in his natural right-back position. It goes without saying that he excelled there too. Wonderful game from ZANETTI and I echo those voices of concern. I will be devastated if he doesn't make it into our World Cup squad.

Esteban CAMBIASSO. He was at fault in Barcelona's goal. He let MAXWELL run past him and couldn't chase him. His passing was a little bit shaking tonight, but his marking was spot on. He had the unpleasant task of interrupting the circuit between XAVI and MESSI and he never stopped running and getting his body in the thick of the action.

Walter SAMUEL. Very solid at the back. Zlatan didn't touch the ball. SAMUEL had a great game and it's good to see his recent form as he will be much needed in South Africa.

Gabriel MILITO didn't play but he looks set to start at the Camp Nou because Carles PUYOL saw a yellow card and got suspended.

For the MESSI doubters...my advice is to keep quiet and to remember he didn't have the best of games at the Emirates against Arsenal in their QF first leg. You all know what happened later. I'm not saying he will do the same next week against Inter, but the boy has it in him and it'll be up to him and GUARDIOLA to sort out the trap MOURINHO placed around The Flea. Can he do it?

Good job Inter, but lets not forget there is a second leg coming up in Barcelona. Milito started slow but turned it up and yes his goal was offside, he had the same look on his face when another Diego punched in a goal I mean headed it in :-)..

Messi had his moments but he was off-key which is strange. Maybe he is a bit tired, that pace he was going on was unreal. Barca may have to rest him over the weekend.

Pupi/Cambaisso/Samuel were all studs! Pupi, he is 36 and plays like he has not missed a beat since he started to play. Cambiasso did his job and did it well. Samuel is the wall and did a couple vital tackles to prevent a goal.

I think it is far from over, Barca playing in their own stadium is going to be quite different. I think they will be up for it and I think will progress. But deep down I would like Pupi to win a major title he deserves it. Messi has 2 already... But it is going to be fun!

Like Seba said, I was well pissed off when Messi didn't got the foul and Inter scored the goal. That was just bad. And yes despite his offside goal which he must have had in the back of his head when it went it because the way he at once looked at the linesman when he scored the goal at that occasion while on the other times when he was offside he noticed only after the whistle, he played damn good as he was involved in everything Inter was involved in. It will be unbelievable if Diego lets him out or Zanetti. To take Samuel and not them would be just unfair.

But I want Barca to win simply because I just hate Mourinho and his cocky attitude. Maybe that's his strategy or something but I hate him the way I hate Ronaldo. Both maybe brilliant on what they do but their attitude sucks. It's enough that we have to deal with our 'flamboyant' coach.

Btw guys; do you think that this game is like a very stark example of possession doesn't win you cups? If the BBC website is correct, Barcelona had 72% possesion and they had decent control of the ball; they just could not break in the last quarter and the referee was not as bad as the Barcelona team members are saying but he was definitely not soft on them. So what does that make to our chances of wining by playing beautifully which in my opinion means a lot of short passes and ultimately a lot of possession?

I am definitely hoping for Messi to shine as the sun this Wednesday but it's going to be hard. But then again, if he is the best ever; this is the time time to prove and also if Barca want to be the greatest ever, perfect opportunity or they will just be one of those very good teams, not the greatest.

Oh,How many of you think Dani Alves absolutely ruined the Barca game and that he has been horrible lately? Today NOT ONE OF HIS crosses could be considered decent in my view.

i realy realy hope inter reach the final and win it,for the sake of our 4 argentine players, specialy for zanetti whose been given so much to inter just imagine our legendary and most caped player lifting that famous trophy at bernabau.

we also must rememmber that over the years inter have had gr8 argentine conictions, they always rely on our players.

but i dont think they gona reah the final, the problem ton8 was maxwel.hes barcelonas weakes link all 3 goals came in his side, against arsenal he let 2 goals in as well.

ithink we gonna see real barcelona on wednesday, that was the worst barcelona since quardiola took over.

Diego Milito stole the show from Messi??? What a ludicrous title!!! I am a Milito fan but this guy scored an off-side goal and missed some easy chances. How could he steal the show from Messi??? Anyways, I am confident Barca will absoltely slaughter these cheaters at camp nou. Up Barca. Be happy with the victory Inter coz u know u can never beat us fair and square.

Sebastian said...

Hey LM10ARG: Nothing seems to please you!

How is that headline ludicrous? Everybody seemed to have been waiting for MESSI to put up another show (like everytime he plays, poor Lionel he is going to have to live with that), but instead, it was Diego MILITO who got 2 assists and 1 goal.

I understand if you're frustrated because Barcelona lost, but objectively, MILITO stole the show from MESSI.

"Needs to tell Messi to be aggressive when he doesn't receive the ball and take the damn role of leader."

agree 100%. this is my problem with Messi. at the same age I agress Messi is better than Maradona in terms of skill. but at 23 Maradona was influential in the team, he was the go to guy when things go bad. this is not happenning with Messi. it disgusts me (and i said this many times) that horrible Busquets has the nerves to lead a counter attack with Messi besided him and never pass the ball!!!i mean common...

Sebastian-->

"Did BATISTUTA never miss a single scoring chance? I mean...come on! He too was very famous for missing a handful every game"

i think you are talking about another Batistuta...not THE Batistuta. yes batigol missed chances in his career but claiming that he was known for missing a handful is a very false argument you are making just to make Milito look good. I really like Milito, but not because he is even worthy of Batistuta comparison but because simple he is - along with Higuain - the best we have.

and yes i believe this tie is over. and barca's season will go from bad to worse now. REASON: Guardiola is an overrated coach with ONE AND ONLY ONE game plan. when things do not go his way (like agianst Espanyol and Inter) he is cluless about what to do.

What is this I see, LM10ARG turning his back on Milito? I can say he was pretty damn solid today, missed his chances but gave 2 great balls and scored 1, goal is a goal. No need to pout over it. It's okay, Barcelona have won enough, time to let Pupi,Cambiasso,Samuel get their time to shine. I agree with Seba, Milito was a star tonight for Inter. Those misses do worry me but even the greats miss time to time. Messi had a few chances but he was shut down for majority of the game. But it is far from over, Inter need to secure this up.

Today is a great day for Barca haters. Every forum I go to, I see how happy people are and bashing, mocking Barca(not necessarity here). No wonder why, they have been waiting for this day for eternity. The day when we will lose a crucial game. Why? Coz Barca won everything and everyone is so jealous of us. Well, thanx to refs we did and but I accept it. What u haters don't realize is that u have only seen the first battle of the two-legged war. They might have won the battle but I am confident we will win the war at Camp Nou. And haters will not like it and hide, I CAN BET. I guess let the haters enjoy the moment, coz it may not last long.

He has been a fan of FCB for a eternity, an entire 2 years! If Messi were playing for Inter, I believe he would be a fan of Inter's, if he was playing in Real, then Real, Arsenal then Arsenal.. Catching my drift. But wow going out on a limb by picking a team like FCB, that is so original and clever. Inter worked FCB and will go through, I say ole!

LM10ARG ,
You are very disrespectful. The purpose of this site is to talk about our country's players. If you want to be a Barca fan go to their website please.

Sebastian,
Milito played well as did Zanetti, Samuel, and Cambiasso. It is a shame that all four will not make it up to the Mundial. I may be a minority but I think Cambiasso is every bit the player Mascherano is, and a better passer, more versatile, etc.

Messi must have thought he had the albiceleste uniform on. Honestly, Mourinho's tactic was no different than you see against our national team. Put pressure on the ball and chase them down. That eliminated Barca's playmakers, and their forwards as well. Ibra and Messi both were irrelevant when Xavi or whoever else can't get them the ball.

Sebastian said...

Mohd, what I said about MILITO missing chances just like BATISTUTA used to miss chances was just an example. One way of putting it. And I wasn't having a go at BATI. Not at all.

But you have to admit he used to miss goals. Just like Fat RONALDO missed from time to time and ROMARIO and KEMPES and every single striker there was and there'll ever be.

Otherwise, that ball wouldn't have hit the post against Holland and we would have been on our way to the semifinals in 1998. Or he would have scored a hat-trick against Romania in 1994 so we would have advanced further in that World Cup. Not to mention 2002. Again, not a go at BATI, but what I'm trying to say is that, no matter how many years went by after the day BATI retired, we shouldn't be casting a shadow over all the other Argentine strikers pretending BATISTUTA couldn't do anything wrong.

That thing is getting closer to the 'New MARADONA' label they put on every playmaker that showed some promise: ORTEGA, AIMAR, RIQUELME, D'ALESSANDRO, TEVEZ, now MESSI.

Tough to play if people ask you to do what those great players have done in the past. Let them be. Let them create their own careers for them.

And most importantly, MARADONA, play them when they're clearly showing they are World Class.

salvio supporter said...

Anonymous, I thought Samuel was going to be in the Mundial! At least, that's what seemed to be after the match with Germany.

And yes, Messi was 'playing' like it was an Argentina match. But that's how it goes in the qualifiers, they physically kill us, specially Messi. I hope that the WC referees are a little more strict so we can get some benefit from it.

GK said...

LM10ARG, a couple calls clearly went Inter's way last night but you call them cheaters. If Inter were 'cheaters' last night what does that make Barca? Are you forgetting how Barca made it to the final last year? If the referee made the right call against Chelsea, Barca's 6 trophies would have been cut down to 3....

FORZA INTER!!!!

Dan said,

One other point, just interested in everyone's viewpoint of this match. Between Zanetti, Samuel, Milito, Cambiasso, Diego Milito, Messi, we could field most of our national team. Did everyone notice the level of direction Mourinho, Guardiola were giving their players? It seems like when Maradona is on the sideline he acts like a spectator or fan. He seldom makes adjustments, and frankly I do not think the players respect him as a coach, but more for his previous accomplishments as a player. I hope this doesn't come back to haunt us. But for the sake of debate, is there anyone here that doesnt think we would be clear favorites to win the world cup if Mourinho or Guardiola was managing our national team? If that is the case, why are we so determined to have an Argentine coach when so many of our players thrive in European systems?

Forza_albicelestes said...

I thought Samuel,Zanetti and Cambiasso were every bit as good as Milito was..if not better,.....

And Messi didnt have a very bad game ..he had a couple of bright spots...Nowhere near Messi level but not very bad either...

But what Bothered me washis lack of trying to do something.....
He needs to up the level when the pressure is on him...

And as for cambiasso I agree he is every bit as good as mascherano is......

milito was very impressive yesterday.i don't why but i think that he is more skillful than higuain, although higuain is becoming a scoring machine. As for BARCA,i think they hv a 30% chance of qualifying and it will all depend on whether they can score an early goal or not.

Abs said...

I am not ganna even bother reading such a bias article, coz from the title you could say it all !!

How could Milito steal a show ?! I mean unless you are talking about the offside goal (which I consider as steal) then maybe you are right !!

For your info, Milito had two shots in the game, one of them was in goal, which is the offside one !!

And how could Cambiasso done perfectly if the first goal was 90% his fault. Letting Maxwell the left full back of the other team go all the way and simply giving up on following him :s

Gotta agree with Abs(on the article). I swear, this kid is not allowed to have one bad game, ever.

Support other team??? It's true that I became a Barca fan coz of Messi but I have fallen in love with Barca and I will be a Barca fan even if there is NO Argentine. I don't support Barca coz of 6 trophies. Even if they go trophyless I will support them. Just like I support Argentina. To bandwagon Inter fans, expect a LESSON in camp nou. LM10Arg,

I've been supporting Barcelona for nearly a decade(not long compared to other fans). With that said, Barcelona played like crap yesterday and Inter deserved to win. Milito's goal was offside and we probably should of had a penalty on that Sneijder/Alves incident, but the refs called 2 offside calls against Inter in the first half which were NOT offside. Those 2 plays would have released Milito 1 on 1 with Valdes and Eto'o(if I'm not mistaken) 1 on 1 with Valdes. That's not to say they would have scored those for sure, but they were wrongly called.

The refs were shit last night, but for both teams. We played like crap, Inter played very well and Barcelona deserved to lose. It's that simple.

With everything said, would I be pissed off if Barcelona gets eliminated in the semi-finals? Yes, but honestly, not that much. Because I know the importance of having fit and healthy players come World Cup time. It happened to us in Veron in 2002 and Riquelme wasn't close to being 100% fit either for 2006. Messi has had a long season and if Barcelona getting eliminated in the semi-finals means ARGENTINA gets a 100% fit and 100% healthy Messi, than I'm all for it.

I've been supporting Argentina for a lot longer than I've been supporting Barcelona. For me, it's country over club any day of the week. And that's the case with alot of the people here who have been commenting.

LM10ARG, its funny how you keep saying the ref won it for Inter last night yet you didn't comment on my comment I left earlier about Barca making it to last year's final on a referee error. Giving Barca the chance to win their 6 trophies rather than 3. Suck it up and stop being a sore loser. Inter were the better team.

Mohd said...

GK-->

allow me to reply to your post. it is absolutely not true that barca won against chelsea because of the ref. why? Chelsea had a 1 (only 1 as opposed to english media who try to promote 2) correct penalty dismissed, that's true. but it is also true that before this incident, the ref gave a scandalous red card to Abidal which left barca exposed at the back when they were pushing forward...so it was mistake for another.

by the way, i am a huge inter fan because of their Arg players especially Zanetti, but i want barca to win the competition in Madrid to stick it in Real's hearts.

GK said...

Mohd....

I am sorry but I dissagree. Abidal's red card was unjust, you are right, but you can't compare the sending off as an equal to a clear penalty which would have changed everything (assuming Chelsea capitalized on the PK). Don't get me wrong, I am not trying to defend Chelsea (who I really dislike) or bash Barca (who I watch every weekend and cheer for, just not as a full out supporter) but truth is truth and Barca advanced on a referee's error.

Now I am a die hard Inter fan and have been for many years, I am not an Inter banwagon jumper like LM10ARG accusses us all to be. And you say you are a huge Inter fan but you want Barca to win? I am sorry but you don't seem like a true fan at all if you want Barca to advance and Inter eliminated. True fans stick behind their team no matter what the crisis, what the situation or who the opponent is....

And Roy, I agree 100%. Country before club anyday!

Sebastian said...

Abs...with all due respect and with no intention to argue or have a fight with you, if you don't want to read the article because you don't like the headline, then how can you comment on it? I mean...how can you comment about the article if you don't read it.

You wouldn't be saying that about CAMBIASSO had you read the article because I did say he was at fault in Barcelona's goal and his passing was sometimes weak.

As for MILITO scoring in an offside position. He is hardly the first man in history to do that, yet he gets crucified and keeps getting underrated because the linesman and the referee made a mistake. I don't get it.

How many goals are scored in offside position? You wouldn't be able to count. Yet I don't recall hearing so many people having a go at the scorer and using the fact that he scored against him.

Regarding my choice of headline, you only need to take a look at Today's Argentine papers and see I wasn't too far off.

The kind of marking he had against Espanyol and Inter Tuesday is what Messi will probably have to deal with in the WC. Inter did it without commiting a lot of fouls... that's interesting to note. however i have a good feeling towards the wc, but not because of messi. and if messi really explodes at the wc, i hope it will happen in the ko-stage. i despise players with the miroslav klose syndrom (9 goals in groupstage against shit teams, one goal in ko-round)

Get yourself another argument. You lost this one because you can't go against a very solid fact I just gave you.

Unknown said...

I think you have a stalker, Seba.

In truth, though, I don't love it when players have to be compared constantly against each other. Why can't Milito and Messi both perform well? Why does one always have to show the other up.

This game was istructional for the Arg nat team, because all teams are going to try to lock Messi in the way Inter tried. And it's not such a bad thing. Messi just needs to learn how to pass off and how to open other people up. Or at least to make that 'weakness' his greatest strength. It's not rocket science, for heaven's sake. It's completely unrealistic to assume that Messi would score in the San Siro. That's not how modern football works. This doesn't make him any less of a brilliant player. I feel like Barcelona almost accept it. It's not like their away games are all that shining. They just get it done in the home game. This time will be more difficult, cause Mourinho has a cynical world view, but that's just how these things go.

And they were tired from their trip. It just wasn't a good day. Whatever.

In any case, it is alarming to see how tired so many players already seem to be. I have to say that this will probably most affect the Spanish Nat. team in the WC. We'll see!

Anonymous said...

I have a question, we all know Messi had an off day. But why the hell isn't anyone talking about the "great" Xavi?

Answer....
Because he is only great when Messi is punching those balls into the back of the net.
For all the "Xavi" fans, I tell you he is OVERRATED.
If memory recalls from the game, he didn't do crap either. My point, Argentina needs a creative midfielder like Pastore, or Aimar or both to play to win.

Sebastian said...

Wait a second. Wait a second.

Barcelona lose a match and all of a sudden MESSI and XAVI are not great players?

I mean...this is the first time under GUARDIOLA that Barcelona lose a match by 2 goals.

In football is easier to destroy play rather than to create. That's a FACT (for those who love their facts!).

The way Inter played Barcelona on Tuesday is easier to replicate by other teams, whilst the way Barcelona play (in my opinion, even though based on last season's 6 trophies you could also say it's a FACT), is almost inimitable.

The number of 'pundits' and fans in general that are absolutely killing Barcelona after Tuesday's result is shockingly big.

The number of people who hate the beautiful passing game and wait for the first opportunity for it to fail is also bigger than one would think in a country like Argentina.

Tuesday was like a breath of fresh air for the beautiful-football-haters.

I'm sick and tired to read and hear how useless the Barcelona game was rendered by the effective clinical Inter.

As I've said many times. I'm a neutral when it comes to this tie between Inter and Barcelona.

You can imagine I'm very happy for Diego MILITO (who very quietly and without the need of making explosive remarks through the press is turning the tide on his favour), for Javier ZANETTI (who shouldn't be left out for the second WC in a row), for Cuchu (who is the best left-side mixed (offensive/defensive) midfielder born in Argentina and still in activity) and for The WALLter SAMUEL, but lets face it: Barcelona had a off game and even then they were robbed when Inter scored the third goal and they could have been given a penalty-kick when SNEJDER tackled ALVES from behind.

I'll be OK with any of those teams to advance to the final but a big part of me now wants Barcelona to shut the f**k up of those beautiful football haters.

If it doesn't happen, then I'll be happy if Diego MILITO shuts the f**k up of those PALERMO-loving idiots! hahaha!

I swear I'm not mad or anything. I'm smiling as I write this. haha!

Love to you all!

I have no doubt they will get called up to the list of 30 and once they do im sure Diego will easily call them for the 23.

HEY GUYS TODAY I M REALLY HAPPY N YOU KNOW WHY? ITS BEACUSE HERE WE CAN FIND SO MANY PEOPLE WHO ARE SUPPORTING COUNTRY BEFORE CLUB... N ONE MORE THING IS THAT I REALLY DONT CARE WHO EVER WINS.. COZ IF BARCA WINS HOPE MESSI SCORES AND IF INTER WINS HOPE MILITO SCORES.... U KNOW WHAT BEFORE THE GAME I WAS SUPPORTING BARCA N DIS IS ALL BECAUSE OUR LITTLE GENIUS MESSI BUT WHEN MATCH STARTED AND WHEN I SAW OUR FOUR ARGENTINIAN PLAYERS WEARING INTER SHIRT THEN DONT WHY I SUDDENLY BECAME NEUTRAL !!!! THIS MAY BE BECAUSE WHEN TWO CAPTAINS WERE ABOUT TO TOSS THE COIN THEN I SUDDENLY THOUGHT RATHER THEN PUYOL LIFITING THE TROPHY IT WOULD BE THOUSAND TIMES BETTER IF ZENETTI LIFTS THE TROPHY !!! ISN'T IT?AN ARGENTINIAN CAPTAIN LIFTING THE CHAMPIONS TROPHY !!! SO I REALLY DONT MIND IF INTER GOES THROUGH !!! VAMOS ARGENTINA !!!!

A FACTS A FACT I CANNOT HELP THAT
MOURINO DOES NOT GET CREDIT FOR SHIT HE DIDNT DO
IM TALKING ABOUT MEDIA PUNDITS AND OTHER ARGENTINA BLOG COMUNITYS WITH THERE IGNORENCE MEDIA/BLOGGERS DIDNT ALL START TOUCHING THEM SELVES WEN ESPANYOLS MANAGERS TEAM STOPPED MESSI AS THEY PUT IT WITH INTER

THATS A FACT IM NOT GOING TO ARGUE WETHER OR NOT RAIN COMES FROM CLOUDS FACTS CANNOT BE ARGUED a fact is not a opinion im fed up with opinionated types trying to say we all have opinions AFTER A FACT WAS STATED

i truly beleive opinion could be the end of us all it gets in the way of fact and thats very dangerous!!!!!!!!

REGARDING MESSI BEING MARKED AT WORLD CUP THATS A COMMONSENSE FACT IM SURE MARADONA IS AWARE OF THATS WHY MESSI IS PLAYING THE DUMMY ROLL LET 3 PLAYERS FOLLOW HIM THATS 3 LESS WEN DIMARIA MAKES HIS RUNS

LET THE CENTER BACK AND THE MIDFIELD DEFENSIVE PLAYERS CLOSE IN ON MESSI IT GIVES HIGUAIN SPACE TO SCORE

MESSI BEING MARKED IS THE DATUM POINT THE CENTER OF ALL THINGS WEN IT COMES TO MARADONAS TACTICS

little secret us football enlightened types understand maradona didnt play playmaker at wc 1986 he played the dummy roll maradona found space via his teams movement unmarked

his doing the same with messi but messi needs time to learn and also grow a per of big balls like maradona had
