CRESPO returns to Parma + one little rant from me!

After failing to settle in as their first choice striker at Genoa, Hernán CRESPO has left the club and joined Parma.

Only 5 goals in 16 appearances for Genoa is certainly not something to write home about. CRESPO will now try to rediscover his goalscoring form at a club for which he scored 61 goals in 116 matches between 1996 and 2000.

I love CRESPO to bits, but I think his days with the national team are over (and if they are not over, they should be).

Not because he lost his abilities (I'm confident he can still deliver the goods), but because there are other players who are far superior right now.

I don't like the way the media insists that this move for CRESPO could result in more playing time and a chance for him to be recalled to the national team.

As I have always said in this space, it is more important to have a past with Boca Juniors or River Plate than to achieve big things and break all kinds of records elsewhere.

Having Martín PALERMO still pretty much in the radar for the national team is testament to this.

To go to a World Cup, it is believed that the 23 names should or would or could be divided like this: 2/3 goalkeepers; 6/7 defenders; 6/7 midfielders; 6/7 forwards.

Since we are speaking about forwards, we have to consider the following: MARADONA will bring MESSI, AGÜERO and TEVEZ. That's an absolute certainty the way I see it. That leaves room for other forwards but not all of them can be out and out strikers (in the mould of BATISTUTA or CRESPO).

The way I see it (and I defy any of you to challenge me with stats and facts), there are better options to CRESPO or PALERMO. I honestly think both should miss out on our World Cup squad.

I know MARADONA is in love with LAVEZZI so I'm pencilling him there.

Our two strikers should then be Diego MILITO (my first choice) and Gonzalo HIGUAIN.

I would also bring Lisandro LOPEZ because he gives you a lot of options, but he won't be going to South Africa because he had an argument with MARADONA and that's it. How else do you explain his exclusion after he scored with his first touch against Russia?

I know we have played this game here on Mundo in recent weeks (though I was very busy at that time and couldn't participate). I know you all have spoken your minds, but I had to talk a little bit about this and I have to reiterate how incredible afraid I am that Diego MARADONA will leave Diego MILITO out of our World Cup squad.

He is absolutely capable of doing that and include one Martín PALERMO that couldn't even record a shot on target at home against a Costa Rican side full of second-stringers.

In the near future we will continue to play around with names (we've got 94 players to choose from in this MARADONA era!) and we will continue to speculate on who's going to travel to South Africa in our quest to win the World Cup and who's going to be left out by a manager that in a perfect world shouldn't be anywhere near our national team (with that job).

Good news for CRESPO. I'm a HUGE Hernan fan and would love nothing more for him than to see him start scoring goals again. However, I think his days with the NT are over. With that said, I would still prefer him over PALERMO for a spot at the World Cup. Of course I would prefer that neither of them make it and would much prefer the likes of MILITO, LOPEZ et all. But if Diego wants to go with a veteran, I say pick CRESPO over PALERMO.

For some reason, I'm confident MILITO will make the World Cup squad. Whether he plays or not is a different subject. He's been featured regularly in Diego's lists, so there's no reason for him not to make it. LOPEZ on the other hand, not so much.

I think you nailed it for the strikers SEBA. MESSI, TEVEZ, AGUERO, HIGUAIN, MILITO and PALERMO. Take out LAVEZZI and insert HIGUAIN.

I completely agree with Seba, even though I am a Boca fan and support Palermo. Well, we know Maradona will make some "strange" choices. I hope Palermo is not one of them and I also hope he doesn't take Lavezzi. Nobody is going to convince me that Lavezzi is a better scorer or plays with better with his mates that Saviola. And I am betting Roy is right and Diego will take Milito. If not, he is even crazier than I think.

I really don't wanna see Crespo, Palermo, or Milito in the NT.

Crespo is a legend, but his days is over.

Palermo no comment is needed.

Milito, will he is just not giving enough to the national team. Since 2003 Milito played 21 and scored only 4 goals.

I know some of you will bring the fact that some other players had the same chances and less goals. But the 30 years old, unlike Kun, Messi or Tevez, always played as our no. 9

Does anybody know the date at which World Cup Squads need to be made? Is it May 22nd?

Abs, please, open your eyes! Those 21 matches you are mentioning are not complete matches. If you take a look at the stats (I posted them here sometime ago and I don't have them handy), you'll see MILITO played 8 minutes here, 16 minutes there, 11 minutes the next game...that's hardly enough to be able to say he never did anything for Argentina. How can he give something if he doesn't play an entire match?

In those stats I posted, I seem to remember there was only one match he played the 90 minutes. A friendly against Uruguay. And he scored 2 goals (with his brother Gabriel scoring an own goal in the same match, played in La Plata a few years ago with BIELSA still as our manager).

He NEVER got the proper opportunity he deserves. Until he does, I will keep on carrying his flag!

Abs, I understand what you mean by MILITO not having the best goal-scoring record with us, but look at this.

21 matches with the NT, 6 of which were in the South American Qualification. In those 6 matches, he played a TOTAL of 157 minutes. That's an average of 26 minutes a MATCH. 26! Combine that with the way our team has been playing, it's no coincidence he hasn't scored(it's not only him, the rest of the team as well).

Compare to TEVEZ who played 750 minutes in 12 matches, that's 62.5 minutes a match. TEVEZ only has 1 goal in those 12 matches and more than quadruple the total playing time of MILITO. Not to mention the situations he put us in(the two red cards).

All I'm trying to say is that MILITO has never really gotten a PROPER chance with the team. When was the last time MILITO played 65+ minutes with Argentina?

Firstly, does Crespo beating out a handful of youngsters and an aging Amoruso (who's had a ton of Serie A stops in his career) make him an attractive pick for the national team? Secondly, is an in-form Crespo really better than the alternatives?Even if he was scoring and playing out of his skin would you still field him over Tevez or Higuain? I don't think so on either count. I agree with Roy and would prefer neither him or Palermo get a chance for the team in South Africa. But given the logic the national team coaching staff has been employing as of late, anything is possible and like Diego said, everyone has a chance to play in South Africa. Ugh.

I actually don't have a problem with Lavezzi. I think he's a great striker and moves really well on the right AND the left and a good alternative to have if you need a player to come in an change things up, depending on what team you are playing or how the match plays out. He is a little quicker than Saviola IMO and I think more versatile. But let's be serious. The starters here are clearly Tevez, Aguero and Messi, barring we face a defense of 7-footers, then I can see why you'd want a big man at center forward. Other than that, their abilities make us assume that they can take care of just about any defense.

in this moment the how thigs is going and how some players are performing i think this is the best formation 4-3-2-1 ....the four in the back zabaleta dimecheles samuel heinz the 3 dm zanetti how he play with inter mascherano cambiasso 2 attacking mid messi tevez he is playing very good with man city and milito in front...do you agree with this formation?

Abs said...

Would it be out of mind if Maradona played 4 of them..
I mean Messi takes on Roman's role, and then Tevez and el Kun with some no. 9 Higuain/Milito ?!

Anonymous said...

the starting duo up front should be hig with milito or hig with saviola and the bench tevez, lopez or aguero
mid would be
rm messi
cm mash with either aimer/benega/cambassio
l.w de maria/perotti
messi to ply as he does at barca out wide and drifting in.

i know what you are saying but reality is they are all available, all in great form and it is a balenced mid and forward unit but as we know diego would not have it.

My choice is Milito, Higuain, Messi, Tevez, Aguero and Saviola.

Even if anyone of the above 6 is injured, I will take Zarate ahead of Palermo or Crespo.
