2010 WCQ - Peru vs. Argentina (Match Thread)

The Albiceleste has arrived in Lima. Speaking of the word LIMA; if you translate that word in Malay (the national language of Malaysia) it means FIVE. And speaking of Mambo No.5; our match against Peru is the fifth game since we last won a World Cup qualifier. To be exact, a 3-0 against Bolivia on the 17th of November 2007.

At the moment we have drop to third place in the standings as Brazil have leapfrog to second place, with a better goal difference. I have to admit that overall I am disappointed. I was expecting all the aura of power from Beijing that will transpire into the senior side.

But wait a sec! There's no telling that the match in Lima could just be a turning point of something great. We'll just have to wait and see.

On the team news, a total of 21 players will be part of the squad for the trip to Peru. The only absentees are Carlos TEVEZ, Javier MASCHERANO (both suspended) and Pato ABBONDANZIERI (injured).

Should Coco decide to maintain the same team, then Juan Pablo CARRIZZO will start in place of Pato. Fernando GAGO will be brought to partner CAMBIASSO in central midfield. So far I've got no issues on this.

As for the striker, Kun AGUERO looks to be the favourite to come in. Personally, I would prefer someone who is more of a hit-man such as Lisandro LOPEZ or German DENIS. However, we will only know this once Coco reveals the starting line up.

What about the match prediction? Well I supposed at this point of time, a 1-0 win from either DI MARIA, RIQUELME or MESSI will do just fine for me. More than that is a bonus.

Let's just hope for the best. Vamos Argentina!

The match will kick off at 2130 hours local time at Estadio Monumental "U", Lima, Peru

I am glad that Carlos Tevez is out because he really does not fit the system that Basile insists on playing. Aguero is a better choice but I also like to see a big central striker in the mode of Batistuta and Crespo. Maybe Cavenaghi or Denis or Lisandro Lopez will fit this bill.

I think Mascherano and Gago form a better midfield than Cambiasso and either of them. Anyway Cambiasso is still a good player.

Who do we have in defence in place of Heinze? Maybe we can put Zabaleta on the left and move Zanetti to the right.

I am hoping for 2:0 but an away game and with Basile's system it won't happen.

I think there is no natural left back in the current squad except Heinze, which this is another mistake made by Coco.

I think Coco can try deploying Zanetti on the left. I remember Zanetti has played as both a left back and left mid some years ago for Inter.

My guess is Carrizo is nets, 3 in the back(I have no idea who, anyone at this point). Zanetti on the right of the midfield, Di Maria on the left(if not Gutierrez), Gago and Cambiasso in midfield, Riquelme ahead of them and Messi/Aguero up front.

Absolutely no excuses. We HAVE to get 3 points.

Let's get ready to RUMBLE !!!

Cata, Gago and Gutierrez to start tonight. Aguero on for Tevez.

Vamos ARGENTINAAAAAAA

Yellow on Peru. Nasty tackle on Jonas and he comes off the pitch holding his shoulder.

He's back on.

johnny said...

Through the first 8 minutes Peru the much more dangerous side. Let's hope that changes soon.

The Peruvian defense is collapsing on Roman.

johnny said...

Yellow on Cata following an Argentina corner.

Good News!
0-0 draw for Brazil! We can regain the 2nd spot if we win this match.

johnny said...

Peru pouring on the pressure.

Great news about Brazil !

johnny said...

Gutierrez on the ground again with that shoulder, comes off and is replaced by my favorite Boca Junior, Sebastian Battaglia.

Another yellow on Peru.

johnny said...

Roman fouled. Free kick coming up. So far Roman is struggling with the pressure.

Nada.

johnny said...

Breakaway for Aguero but he can't quite round the keeper !

Another yellow for Peru.

The Peruvians are trying to sell alot of non existent fouls.

johnny said...

Messi got bowled over and is not looking quite right but still on the pitch. Please be OK !

johnny said...

Yellow on Demichelis. Free kick coming for Peru.

Nada.

I think Masche is definitely being missed. Way too much penetration by Peru.

Unknown said...

No penetration from Argentina, and little movement. Like they are waiting for Messi to do it all.

johnny said...

0-0 at half. A very disturbing first period. Roman has been horrible and I say that as a non Riquelme hater. Aguero almost invisible. Messi is trying but can't do it all himself. Peru with way too many chances on offense. A rough match as well and Peru appears to want a war of attrition.
Coco needs to pull a rabbit out of his hair for the second period.

Unknown said...

I also dont' believe Peru can play so aggressive and physical the whole game. They are bound to get tired and allow openings.

johnny said...

2nd period underway.SOS. Argentina looks tired and unsure on offense and defense.

Anonymous said...

I cant believe how bad we are playing. Its so sad that we can turn it off like this.

johnny said...

A little more penetration from Argentina but nothing to show for it.

Basile is going to get fired and you know what I do not care!

Jack!

johnny said...

German Denis on for Aguero.

johnny said...

Big save for Carrizo !

Anonymous said...

Cambiasso needs to be replaced. DiMaria should play. cambiasso is too slow. we need more speed on the counters.

Anonymous said...

Way to go Cambiasso, way to blow that! And they just almost ate a goal.

Jack!

johnny said...

Sounds like a good idea to me. Too bad Gutierrez got hurt. He can be speedy and dangerous.

johnny said...

One more yellow for Peru.

Anonymous said...

This team can not win. They are just playing. Well who else thinks Dunga and Basile will be in the unemployment line real soon?

Jack

johnny said...

Yellow on Gago. A frustration foul.

This match reminds me of the disaster against Brazil except that Peru can't score. Though they almost just did.

Anonymous said...

I pray that Basile get fired. He is terrible. Can we get Toccalli back??

johnny said...

Yellow on Battaglia.

Another close save by Carrizo.

Anonymous said...

77 mints still score is 0-0

Anonymous said...

Way to go Denis, thats how you blow a goal you fool.

Jack!

Anonymous said...

I have been of Riquelme for a long time but this guy has on and off games the team can not afford this in the WC.

Jack!

johnny said...

Demichelis with a header a few feet too high.

Anonymous said...

Another blown chance.

johnny said...

Goalllllll !!!! Cambiasso on a cross from Gago. Nice side footer from Esteban !!

Anonymous said...

GOAL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Anonymous said...

Its all over 90 mints 0-0 score

Anonymous said...

Watch them blow it. Just watch..

Jack!

johnny said...

Looks like lopez is following a different match.

Anonymous said...

Goal.......

Anonymous said...

Figures. I talk smack about Cambiasso and he scores. Maybe I should talk about him some more. :)

Anonymous said...

I think she was watching the Brasil game. Watching a late airing.

Jack!

johnny said...

Cambiasso takes an elbow to the head and Zabaleta on for him.

Anonymous said...

Zabaleeta may look like Crespo but what in the world is he kicking the ball from 30yards back.

Jack

Anonymous said...

OMG! WTF is going on?? A goal in the 90th??

Anonymous said...

blame messi. I am sorry, he gave up the ball in the corner and peru scores. Crap

johnny said...

Disaster. Goal Peru at the very bitter end. A perfect cross. Carrizo with no real chance. Battaglia got beat around the corner. In hindsight he should have taken the Peruvian down and chanced a free kick.

1-1 final.

That would have been the ugliest win I have ever seen, so I guess it wasn't to be.

A shattering end to an ugly performance.

Anonymous said...

screw this team. I am just tired of them. They can not get a ball away. And Messi just gives up the ball what a joke man. Hell with this team.

Jack.

Anonymous said...

Well, what can I tell guys! I thought we had 3 points in the bag. Blame the lack luster team, the refree who let the play on and especially Zabelta, he didn't put any effort on the Peruvian, then Demi let the other peruvian run past him.Luck is not on our side and oh well it was not anything like a great performance as well. And btw, when will we learn that one goal wont give us a sure fire victory that we just try to keep the ball possession rather then still try some attack? A super physical game played by Peru. You can see it in the number of cards. The only good thing about the game was our Carizzo. Hope he becomes our regular.

Vamos Albiceleste

Read my post@ 9:19 did I not say watch them blow it? No heart on this team. They win the Olympics and come back thinking they are untouchable. Well Basile you will be looking for a new job.

Oh dear! What a nightmare we are having in this World Cup Qualy!

I'm writing from my venue at the Paralympics where an hour ago (or so), our Murcielagos (the Football 5-a-side for the blind, national team) have only managed to get a 0-0 draw against Brazil. It was a classic, like always between these two. If one of them could have won it, it would have been Brazil. They played better, but our defence was great. 0-0 and still a lot to play before it's time for the medal matches.

Back to 11-a-side. I repeat...OH DEAR! What's going on???

I cannot comment much because I've miss both of these matches (Paraguay and Peru) but 2 points from a possible 6 is something to be worried about.

I think it's not acceptable for the kind of players we have.

That's all I can say without watching the games.

Anonymous said...

Carizzo did a good job . No Pato ,No Cruz .How about Coco .I Hoped he will go out soon

Player grades:

Good performance:

Carrizo
Gago
Cata Diaz

Most-Mediocre

Bad:

Roman
Aguero

We were completely outplayed in midfield, offensive and defensive sides. Mascherano's value further increased after this ugly spectacle. The Peruvians were fired up, at home and took the fight to Argentina. We responded but not as well as you would hope.

I have been a Coco fan ever since I moved to BA and watched him lead a wonderful Boca club in 2006. But he strikes me as a coach who is not much of a disciplinarian, and excels with instilling confidence in young players. It appears the NT is in need of a coach that can instill some fear of losing your job. It appears it is time for a general reworking and rethinking. So I vote for my buddy Coco to get the axe.

Call up Crespo! He wants in! He is 33 but the guy still is a force who can put it in the back of the net.

CRESPO ISSUES INTER QUIT THREAT
Internazionale striker Hernan Crespo admits he may be forced to leave the club in January if he is to win back his place in the Argentina team.

Crespo has not featured for Alfio Basile´s side for more than a year and knows he has to be playing regularly for Inter if he is to be considered again.

"If I don´t play, I won´t be called up. Every time I watch the national team play, I die," Crespo told FOX Sports.
