The 2008/09 Champions League will kick off today. There is plenty of exciting matches to look ahead after what turned out to be another great weekend of football. Here are some of my pick for this week clashes.
Day 1 – 16/09/2008
Can Barcelona put their poor start in La Liga behind them when they entertain Sporting Lisbon? I hope to see Lionel MESSI, after having being criticized by Diego MARADONA, will put up a big performance and restore some confidence in the Nou Camp.
Next up, welcome to the Champions League Kun AGUERO! Atlético Madrid will have a tough encounter when they travel to play PSV.
Another big game will be Javier MASCHERANO & Liverpool traveling to Marseille. Confidence must be running high for them after their win against Manchester United.
The Anglo-French battle will also take place in London, with Chelsea playing host to Fernando CAVENAGHI's Bordeaux. I would love to see him getting his name on the score sheet.
Day 2 – 17/09/2008
It has to be defending champion, Manchester United's visit to Villareal. It will be interesting to see whether the Red Devils will bounce back from their weekend misery. There will be interesting match up between Carlos TEVEZ and Gonzalo RODRIGUEZ.
The Albiceleste Dragon's of FC Porto's match against Fenerbahce looks interesting as well. What about the Real Madrid and debutant BATE match? From what I've heard, many Real fans are calling the coach to start Gonzalo HIGUAIN ahead of RAUL.
The following are the other matches taking place this week.
Day 1
Roma vs CFR
Panathinaikos vs. Internazionale
Werder Bremen vs. Anorthosis
FC Basel vs. Shaktar
Day 2
Celtic vs. AaB
FC Steaua Bucureşti vs. Bayern
Lyon vs. Fiorentina
Dynamo Kyiv vs. Arsenal
Juventus vs. Zenit

Hola, Loco!
Hey! nice blog man, i found it 2 weeks ago, and now with the UCL i will visit it almost every day.
Im a big fan of Kun Aguero & independiente, im from argentina.
I hope you can post all kun´s goals.
un abrazo! / big hug!
Faku!
p.s: You missed ATLETICO MADRID vs PSV in Day 1.
What a night for the Romanian side Cluj! They played against Roma without any fear and whatsoever, defeating them 2-1. The two strikes from Emmanuel CULIO was simply magnificent.
And what an introduction from Kun AGUERO in the Champions League. A double strike from him and plus one from MANICHE help them to a 3-0 win away to PSV.
The other Albiceleste scorer of the night is David ABRAHAM for FC Basel. However the Swiss side suffered a 2-1 defeate at home to Shaktar Donestk.
Nice to see MESSI's performance for Barca. Despite no goals from him, in my opinion, he was the star of the game.
I've posted all the goals from today's fixture in a new post.
trully, CFR Cluj really made a terrific match, in regards to the question you posted on my blog, about what i think the chances of CFR in future matches
I think that if they are concentrated and focus on their game, they might just qualify out of the group stage, one thing's for sure, Chelsea will have a very tough time in Romania
Hi, I saw your post in my blog.
http://calcioplus.blogspot.com
I really like your blog and your work.
What can I say about Aguero? I think he is an amazing player. He's an hunter. Any kind of ball he receive become a goal. Fantastic player.
Yesterday I was in Olimpico to see Roma - Cluj. I am a Roma supporter. In this period we are in difficult in Serie A and Champions League. Cluj have made a great match: after a good Roma start, Cluj came out and make a really good match. Roma is a better team than yesterday.
Yeah, CFR made a great match. nevertheless Roma played bad.
In our local media, I read today that Culio said he would like to play for the Romanian national team.
Hi John,
Atletico de Madrid were fabulous, or should I say Sergio Aguero.
Important point this as shown in last weeks "Liga" game against Valladolid were Atleti lost 2-1 with Aguero needing to come on in the 2ºhalf to score their only goal.
Now with Forlan OUT for a month, risky times if Aguero gets injuried.
But lets not get pessimist, & enjoy this moment. However, lets not all get carried away with Atletico, those who know the team also know that there will be suffering times ahead mixed with the joys.
To follow Atletico is to be on a "roller-coaster" an experience no one ever forgets. Thats why its addictive:)
Nice blog John , thanks fopr the invitation
Well i write about sports and fotbal even if I`m not much of a fan but what can I say: Congrats to CFR for a wonderful game, not even me as a romanian didn`t expect them to overcome AS Roma. They really made a good game and Rome, well, I think they underestimated CFR Cluj like I did.
Tonight, Steaua ! Let`s see what they`re made of ... :)
What a day!! Absolutely wonderful day of football for everybody (Unless you're a Roma fan). Normally I find the Group stage to be a bit boring, but I fancy this year to be one of the deeper pools we have ever seen!
Absolutely splendid match on behalf of your man Aguerro, I loved his decision to stay at Atletico this summer, and he is showing why the biggest clubs in the world will throw money at his feet next year. Massive win for a Madrid side that has been relatively dissapointing in league play up until now. Tough win at Eindhoven, have to be happy with that match setting you up for the knockout portion of the tournament.
I was quite happy with my beloved Chelsea yesterday though, a massive win for the boys in blue. It's great to have football back!
The players argentinos are of the best of all the World. My prefer is Agüero.
Atletico have a great potential but I think they need to improve their consistency.
They have a great squad and I hope they will success in the Champions League and La Liga.
And Aguero is on his best right now!
Firstly please accept my apology on the videos which I've posted from Youtube. I'll see if I can find some other videos and replace them with the existing one.
Today morning matches, was less exciting compare to Day 1. Once again, Man Utd and Villareal played to a goalless draw. Carlos TEVEZ came close on several occasions.
Meanwhile, FC Porto produced a clinical performance against Fenerbahce by defeating the Turkish side 3-1.
Porto led through early goals from Lisandro LOPEZ and Lucho GONZALEZ, and although Daniel GUIZA got one back against the run of play, Fener rarely threatened an equalizer before LINO capped the win in injury time.
Nelson BENITEZ and Mariano GONZALEZ were both in Porto's starting line up, while Tomas COSTA and Ernesto FARIAS were on the bench.
Well that concludes our round up from Match day 1. Thanks for wonderful comments.
'Mundo Albiceleste' is a great idea. Congratulations John. Argentine players deserve this. Keep visiting http://paixaopeloporto.blogspot.com/
Lucho Gonzalez is my favourite player. 'El Comandante'!
Best regards

I read your articels, and you have some interesting articles. About Champions League, I can say, that there always will be execelent games....I hope :) As Roma against CFR Cluj, what a game...it was senzational, the players from the romanian team were pretty good. I hope in the next games they will play as well they played with Roma. Good luck in the future for the writers. Keep in touch. bye
Hi John!
I let my print on your blog to thank you for your visit as an PORTUGAL PASSENGER - Your blog is cool and full of surprises - Congratulations !
Ah yeah i'm not for Porto but i'm a big fan of Argentina 82/86/90/94 - undermeaning Diego Armando Maradona, simply the best player ever seen on earth until now... Carpe Diem - JPFG 2008
thank you for your comment i'm very pleased =)and no problem about writing in english =)
i think it was the historical score for all this football seasonafter roma game if they get any unexpected result i wont be surprisedactually their group looks the easiest one...if they can get three point from anorthosis game they could do something
if you didnt read and understand my blog about Cluj the main idea was their Coach
Trombetta worked for 14 years in seria A and Bhe was the assistant of Francesco Guidolin i think with the experince of italian league he won against Rome...

Hello, F.C. Porto won the first game in Champions League, with goals of Lisandro López and Lucho González. These two players are fantastic, Lisandro is a great striker and Lucho is the boss of the team. F.C. Porto have more four argentinian players but they don´t play very much. Ernesto Farías is a player with a lot of reputation, but F.C. Porto always play with only a forward and Lisandro is the chosen one. Bolatti is in the second season in the team and until now Bolatti don´t play one great game. Tomas Costa and Nelson Benitez are new in the team, so i can´t say a lot about their quality. The argentinian players are very good and i expect that Nelson Benitez and Tomás Costa can be succeed in the team.
