Toast of the Weekend - Murcielagos & Martin

So how was your weekend everybody? I'm pretty sure it must be a mixed feeling after that disappointing draw against Paraguay on Saturday. I hate to say this but in my humble opinion we were quite lucky to get away with draw.

Now we'll just have to look towards the next match against Peru. Once again, thanks to all of you for keeping those comments coming in our match thread. Really wish I could be there with you.

Now, to some other news.

Murcielagos Beats Spain 2-0 in Paralympic 5-a-side Football Opener

Hopefully, we will get to hear more about this from Seba who was there covering this event. In the meantime let me share this good news with you.

Forward Silvio VELO scored twice to gift Argentina a 2-0 win over Spain in the Beijing Paralympic 5-a-side football opener at the Olympic Green Hockey Stadium on Sunday.

Only seven minutes into the first half, VELO opened the scoring when his powerful volley beat goalkeeper Spanish goalkeeper Jose Manuel GOMEZ. After dancing past several Spanish defenders, VELO sealed the win with his second goal.

"My goals were important because we won our first crucial match. We took a step forward and this is a great start if we want to get to the podium," said VELO, who is nicknamed "the blind MARADONA".

Spain squandered a golden scoring opportunity when Antonio Jesus MARTIN's penalty kick was saved by Argentine keeper Gonzalo Abbas HACHACHE only seven minutes to go.

Meanwhile, good luck to all the athletes at the 2008 Paralympics Games, regardless of which nation. You are already a winner here in Mundo Albiceleste.

Gramatica Perfect Kicking in Saints Win Over Bucs

Martin GRAMATICA was 100% on the kicking duties as his team the New Orleans Saints defeated his former side the Tampa Bay Buccaneers 24-20.

He converted the extra point for the Saints in the first quarter after a touchdown from David PATTEN. In the third quarter, he successfully made a 34 yard field gold to tie the score at 10-10.

GRAMATICA went on to convert two more extra points after further touchdowns by Devery HENDERSON and Reggie BUSH. He was a Super Bowl for the Bucs in 2003.

Well guess what, John? VELO was talking to me when he said that. I don't know where you got that quote from, but that is exactly the service I provide at the moment. I talk to the players, publish their quotes on an intranet system and the accredited media have the right to use those quotes for their own articles.

I'm so glad you found that quote.

He, and all his team-mates, were over the moon with that win over Spain (one of the best teams in the competition).

VELO's goals were amazing. The first one came after he fooled everyone (even the guide Argentina have behind the opposing goal and that give directions to the players). Instead of trying to hit to the far post, Silvio took a shortcut to the near post and after he rounded the wall formed by 3 Spanish players, he sent a rocket that kissed the cross-bar before going in.

The second one was pure class. He completely fooled the keeper hitting with the outside of his foot. His powerful strike to the far post was impossible to stop.

After the game, I experienced one of the best moments in my career. When we finished our interview, VELO, whom I met last week at a training session, remembered my name and he was incredibly nice. He said: "So..Seba, what do you think of our sport. You told me you watched some games on the television but this was the first time you saw us on site". I told him that I got emotional and that they played a great game.

Tomorrow (Tuesday), Argentina will play against the inexperienced but incredibly talented Chinese team. It'll definitely be a difficult game. We'll see what happens.

Thanks for updating the blog and for including our proud Murcielagos on it!

Thanks Akash for the info.

Los Murcielagos lost against China today.

They now face Brazil on Thursday. They need to win and hope for China to beat Brazil later in the tournament if they want to fight for the gold medal.

China scored in a very unfortunate move for Los Murcielagos as Lucas RODRIGUEZ collided with a teammate and hit the ball between the legs of his goalkeeper Gonzalo ABBAS HACHACHE.

VELO was incredible again, but was denied by the post and couldn't convert his chances. Tough luck for a team that played really well even in defeat.

Hey Seba, what a surprise! I took that quote from the Xinhua newspaper's website.

Perhaps, if you don't mind, could you do me a favour? Tell VELO about Best of 2006 Top 10. I'm sure he will be very happy to hear this (provided if it doesn't clash with your work).

As always Akash, thanks for the info.

Hopefully our beloved will overcome this defeat and beat Brazil.
