RIQUELME: Is he a Prima-Donna?

It´s well-known that Juan Román RIQUELME is not exactly an easy-going guy. He has always been impossible to talk with for the local press when he first came to the scene playing for Boca.

He would score a hat-trick and yet refuse to talk with the journalist after the match.

Some think he is special and once you get to know him and become his friend he is a great guy. Some think he always have the same face, the same look in his eyes. It doesn´t matter if he scores a crucial goal or he miss an all-important penalty kick. He´ll always have the same expression.

But the most controversial side of RIQUELME seem to take place in the kitchen of football: the dressing room.

The Chilean newspaper “La Tercera” have published an article about the rift between RIQUELME and Villarreal manager Manuel PELLEGRINI who have decided to exclude ROMÁN from his squad and sent him on loan to Boca Juniors.

Now the details that La Tercera have unveiled are shocking (to say the least).

Arguably, RIQUELME was guilty of the following acts of misconduct while at Villarreal:

• Complained about the weight of the ball

• Refused to participate in some volunteer team training

• Include family members on the team´s travelling buses

• Arrange a press conference to announce his retirement from international football at Villarreal without the consent of the club´s authorities

• Listen to music on his MP4 player while PELLEGRINI was giving the pre-match talk to the team.

Granted these are rumours or versions published in Chile, but knowing RIQUELME I have little doubts they are true.

Another of his prerogatives was to have a private parking lot.

I’m not surprise to hear all this, as I’m sure all of us who have seen RIQUELME in the World Cup would have noticed his moody behavior. The only doubts I have on this report is that it came from the press of another country. Maybe to understand all this better, we should learn from his background such as his childhood life because there must be some valid reason for all this to take place.

I’m not going to deny how talented and gifted he is as I was lucky enough to see the young man in action when he was part of the 1997 World Youth Cup (held in Malaysia) winning team. I knew he was going to inherent that role left vacant by Diego MARADONA.

As a matter of fact I was surprise when he was left out by BIELSA for the 2002. Then came that transfer to Barcelona on which he was given the No.10 jersey (previously wore by RIVALDO and currently by RONALDHINO) and I was confidence he was going to prove the critics wrong.

But since then everything is going into the wrong direction, apart from the fact he help Villareal from being mid table Spanish side to Champions League semi-finalist.

Other Sports.

Argentina stars in Euroleague action.

Tau Ceramica beats Lottomatica Roma 99-56 with Luis SCOLA scoring 13 points.

Not so lucky for Juan Pepe SANCHEZ as Unicaja were defeated by Dynamo Moscow 86-80. PEPE scored 10 points.

I like Riquelme and don't know what to believe. Since this is published in Chilean newspaper and Marcela Mora y Araujo,an Argentinian sports journalist (who translated El Diego autobiography into English) who know many Argentinian football players very well include Riquelme said Roman may be many things but a primadonna he is not. So really don't know what to believe. I choose to just remember his great moves and creative passes on the pitch. I only think that coaches and teammates have to adjust to his game on the pitch that's all. No one would say anything as long as he delivers but things are not going well beginning this season. But Boca fans still love him though.

This is what Marcela said about him. She's one of the people came into comment. Sid Lowe wrote the column. Just scroll down.

This is just the way Riquelme is. He has been like this for his whole career. His supporters can claim genius behave different from others and therefore they don't need to obey general rules.

Nice one! Also...a lot of comments and a lot of english-speaking people interested in Argentina.

Feel free to invite them to read our blog if you have the chance.

It´ll be great!
