Extreme measures against violence in Argentine football

It was always going to happen. Unlike other critical moments in the past, no-one has died in a football-related violence episode in recent days. But the situation is unbearable.

After the big Avellaneda derby was abandoned after the Racing Club supporters had a go at the police (with their team losing 2-0), football in Argentina has hit rock bottom and things just couldn't continue like this.

Countless games have been abandoned because of violence (in every division) and to understand the league standings is a difficult task with all those teams having game-in-hand after several matches were cancelled and that's just the less important aspect of this whole situation.

Club's presidents (like Gimnasia´s J.J. MUÑOZ) who invade the referee´s locker room to death-threaten him; hooligans of that club doing the same with their players if they win against Boca Juniors hence benefiting Estudiantes (Gimnasia´s biggest rivals); riots; missile-throwing crowds...

It just got worst and worst and today, some extreme measures have been applied by the AFA.

Here´s a list of these measures:

1. From now on, there'll be no more away fans attending games from First Division down to Primera D (fifth tier football).

2. No more tickets sold on the day.

3. Access will be only given to members and season-ticket holders.

Another measure was taken to punish Racing Club (in an attempt to give an example of taking measures against a big club so there are no suspicions from fans of smaller clubs who have been always prosecuted by the AFA and bad refereeing decisions against them).

After the trouble caused by Racing fans on Sunday, they have been ordered to play against San Lorenzo in a neutral ground (despite the troubles being caused at Independiente's ground). Now they'll play at La Plata's new stadium and with another of the measures going into action right away, there'll be no San Lorenzo fans either (remember: no away fans from now on until further notice).

So the first outcome is another classic match between big clubs like Racing and San Lorenzo, being played in an empty stadium.

If you ask me...I rather have this, than the constant non-sense we're seeing week in and week out in Argentina.

I doubt we'll reach a final solution to these problems, but I'm glad that at least the authorities are trying something.

Next on the line will be the feared and almost never implemented points deduction for the clubs with trouble-maker hooligans.

All of these measures will be running until 2007 where I'm afraid...things are going to go back to (un)normal. It's a never-ending story...at least until we remove the real cancer out of football: corrupted club's board-members.

They use hooligans to help them out with their campaigns, they sell cheap and buy expensive, they fix games and then they pretend to be victims of the whole situation.

Hopefully...before too long, we'll see the light at the end of the tunnel.

Hi Seba,

Thanks for taking your time in starting a new discussion in this wonderful blog.

First and foremost, there is no place for violence in football and it should not be tolerate at all. Authorities must have an all out attack approach on people who caused or inflict violence in football, doesn’t matter whether it players, fans or management of the club. However I believe that these people are still the minority but the little things that they create turns out to paint one big ugly picture on football.

There will always be fans that have some sort of hatred towards another team (maybe due to some rivalry like Barca/Real or Boca/River) but violence is never the answer or the solution. I can’t imagine kids who were brought to the stadium to see a football match by their parents, instead being inspired by their heroes on the pitch they were exposed to violence caused by some idiots!!!

Corrupted board members are also another issue that is spreading in the world of football these days. Many of them don’t seem to know or understand (or playing stupid if you put that way) about their role in the club. At times they don’t seems to have the passion in running their football clubs, instead it’s all about money or political agenda. Many clubs are suffering due to bad management from its insane board members

One good example is Scottish Premiership side’s Hearts, currently being chaired by Lithuanian businessman named Vladimir Romanov. Despite investing his millions to the club, but his constant interference in the team selection and the players buying has caused a huge unrest in the dressing room.

Having said all this, in the end who is suffering from all this? It is true and passionate supporters like you and me. I really hope that all this will come to an end (though unlikely in the near future) and please I urge these hooligans to return football to what it should be. THE BEAUTIFUL GAME.

Hi There,

Some Breaking News…

AC Milan has been linked with Argentine goalkeeper Marcelo MONTOYA who plays with Belgrano. Montoya is regarded as the natural successor to Argentina’s No 1 goalkeeper Roberto ABBONDANZIERI. To be honest this is the first time I’m hearing this player’s name. Perhaps any one of you out there would like to share some info about this player.

Barcelona who are depressed up front with injuries to ETO’O and SAVIOLA, are ken to sign Rodrigo PALACIO along side with Henrik LARSSON (returning for a second spell) and Albert LUQUE.

Real Madrid on the other hand is expected to sign Fernando GAGO during the January transfer market (though Boca has insist that GAGO will remain until end of the season). Another Real’s target when the transfer window opens is Gonzalo HIGUAIN.

I must say that I have mixed feelings regarding these transfers. Part of me is saying that its great that a club like Real Madrid acknowledges the talent and gift that our players possessed. Another part of me is worried on the fact that these players might have a tough time in breaking into the first team.

GAGO looks like the best prospect as Real are definitely seeking someone to replace the ageing EMERSON to linked up with Mamadou DIARA. HIGUAIN could probably have some competition in the present of RONALDO and VAN NISTELROOY.

Thanks for that update John ! Very interesting info. I am betting Real is going to let El Gordo go, and maybe this explains their interest in Higuain. I would love to see Gago and Palacio in La Liga. I have been watching them with Boca week in and week out. Gago is still very young, but very talented and most importantly, knows his role on the team. Palacio is fast as the wind, but slight of build. He is wonderful to watch, but I wonder how he will do with a step up in competition. That said, Barca has got to be a little desperate at this point.

Keep those tidbits coming !!

Very sad that this clasico came on the heels of all the Gimnasia LP bullshit. But, when was the last time we had a peaceful clasico en avellaneda????

Recuerdes el ultimo partido cuando perdio racing con dos tantos de KUn??

Hi There Everyone,

I would like to share sad news on which I’ve just read on the newspaper today morning pertaining to our tennis superstar David NALBANDIAN. It has been a terrible week for him following the death of his godchild due to some accident.

Despite of this painful moment, NALBANDIAN has managed to beat Andy RODDICK to clinch a place in the Tennis Master semi-final.

On behalf of Albicelestes supporters worldwide, we would like to give our condolence to the NALBANDIANS family following this tragic loss.

Sigh, with Palacio and Gago leaving Boca we are going to left with no players :( Congrats to them both though, wonderful opportunity for all three of them. If only I didn't dislike Real Madrid.

Hi Argentinafan,

Though I may not be a great Boca fan (just to let everyone know they are my favourite Argentinean club) but I have followed them closely over the years.

I don’t think this is the first time Boca is having trouble rebuilding after losing key players to European clubs. In the past Boca had let go many top players such as Ramon RIQUELME, Martin PALERMO, Walter SAMUEL, Jorge BERMUDEZ, Carlos TEVEZ and Oscar CODOBRA. Despite of all this, Boca continues the force as it has always been, not just domestically but also in South America.

Hi All,

First of all, i want to pay my respect to the Great Puskas who passed away today. You have showed the world what an impeccable forward you were with 83 goals in 84 internationals.
R.I.P."The Galloping Major"

The weekend is back and after a heavy working week, lets kick back and enjoy the weekends matches.

My concerns and wishes for the weekend has to go out to the following group:-

1) Gabriel Heinze - Has returned from injury but it seems that Ferguson prefers to use EVRA, i hope this will not jeopardise his place in the team and i want to see Gaby back at the left back against Sheffield Utd.

2) Tevez and Mascherano. Playing against Chelsea this weekend at Stamford Bridge. What a better way to show Harewood, Zamora, Mullins and Reo - Cocker how to play football, if they are given the opportunity.

3) Real Zaragoza's boys will be playing against Gimnastic at La Romadela, i hope to see Diego Milito leading the front line doing what he does best now...GOAL!!!!

Also to all the Argentinians playing football anywhere around the world...Vamos Argentina.

Cheers,
Alwin

Hi everyone,

And Puskas's 512 goals in 528 games for Real Madrid. What a forward, R.I.P.

Thank you for all the updates on this weekend alwin. I missed Gaby too. Hope he get his place back on the pitch soon. And vamos to another Gaby in Spain. Hope he scored this weekend and be lonely up there on the pichichi top spot.

Have a nice weekend all Argentina supporters. Cheers!

OOPS sorry, it's Diego. Gaby is the other Milito closing down the door at the back. Me bad!!!

Hi everybody,
I've just read the following article (which is in Spanish, I'm sorry)

http://www.infobae.com/notas/nota.php?Idx=287023&IdxSeccion=100439

and I can't believe it: Pekerman to coach the US soccer team?! I've only found articles on Pekerman's possible appointment by the US soccer federation in the Argentine and Mexican press but nowhere in the US News, so I don't quite know what to make of it. Anyone who knows if it's true or not?!

Anonymous said...

I wouldn't bet on it. Klinsmann is the top candidate (and almost certain to accept) as far as I know (the US want him bad) and while Pekerman is a good coach, he doesn't speak English and the US really want a coach that does. I think Sports Illustrated had mentioned him as a potential candidate because he is a respected coach but they also believe that the chances of him getting an appointment were highly unlikely.

RIP Ferenc Puskas

RIP Ferenc Puskas. What a great player.

Re: the transfer rumours, I wouldn't believe the Palacio one. If Barca are going to sign anyone, it will be a loan deal. The simple reason for this: we'll have 7 strikers (Ronaldinho, Eto'o, Messi, Giuly, Gudjohnsen, Saviola, Ezquerro) when everyone is fit, which is too many already, plus Maxi Lopez out on loan.

Gago and Higuain to Real look credible, sadly for me. Don't get me wrong, I hope they're successful, but you have to say that recently Real have not had a great record with young talent, or with Argentineans. Higuain would be struggling to get a game unless Van Nistelrooy, Ronaldo, and Cassano are injured. Gago might have it easier, since either Diarra nor Emerson are looking worth their price right now.

But to actual match news. I hope Gaby Heinze gets back into contention for ManU. It would be great to have an Argentinean succeeding with one of the Premiership big four. (On that note, poor Gaby Paletta at Liverpool. He's played, what, one league cup game?)

Diego Milito to get a hattrick against Nastic, anyone? And Tevez to open his account by scoring against Chelsea. That would be great.

Hi All,

Seba, Hope you are doing well with your busy schedule, didn't we all tell you not to worry, we will keep this Blog going strong :)

Andaman, good to see you here again, hows things in Thailand? Did you get my message in the other blog topic "Lisandro Lopez" about me coming to Thailand in January?.

Saludos -argentinafan, hope things are also going fine for you. Yes PEKERMAN is a highly respected coach and we all know what he can bring to any team, and if the USA are going to hire him it will be a great boost for them. Yes, KLINSMANN has been heavily linked also, after all he is living in the US anyway. I did hear some rumours last time around the PEKERMAN was also linked to the CHINA national team job. Anybody from China that might want to confirm this?

Linda, yes, it's great to see an Argentinean having success in England. In HEINZE's case, FERGUSON has already started him in 2 Matches after his injury, the both games were the 1-0 defeat to F.C. Copehhaegen in the Champions League and the 1-0 defeat to Southend in the League Cup. I hope both these games does not jeopardise his chances in the first team. As for PALETTA, he has started 2 games for Liverpool in the League Cup against Reading and Birmingham. Looks like BENITEZ is keeping him for that cup as i heard he was supposed to be long term replacement for CARRAGHER. Yes, it would be lovely to watch TEVEZ tear up the CHELSEA net if he gets a chance to play. Talking about smashing nets, i would not bet against Diego MILITO not scoring against Gimnastic, i think he would add to the tally.

I think thats all for now guys, enjoy your weekend and remember that our blood is always BLUE AND WHITE!!

Cheers,
Alwin

Hi everyone,

I just found this article (in English), which confirms that, at least up to now, the PEKERMAN story has been nothing more than a rumor:

http://www.signonsandiego.com/sports/20061118-9999-1s18soccer.html

Well I'm sure that KLINSMANN will get the nod over everyone else, considering that he's based just a few miles away from the US training facilities... And his personality has become pretty USamerican since he moved there... he has completely internalised the "think positive" approach, this always having a smile on his face and being hyper-motivated - which, on the other hand, isn't at all true with PEKERMAN, who I think doesn't fit into the "american way of life".

Hi Everyone,

First and foremost I would like give my utmost respect to Ferenc PUSKAS. His achievement and contribution to football will never be forgotten. Thank you Puskas, for giving us all those great moment. We salute you. RIP

An Argentina player was on target for Zaragoza in their 3-0 win over Gimnastic. However this time it was not Diego MILITO but Pablo AIMAR.

However Hernan CRESPO was on target for Inter as they beat Reggina 1-0 to go three points clear on top of Serie A.

Meanwhile they were good and bad news in other sport that Argentina is participating.

David NALBANDIAN'S Master Cup campaign has to came an end after he was beaten by James Blake
6-4, 6-1. I do really hope that this is not a setback for him in his preparation for next month Davis Cup Final against Russia.

However it is different story for our rugby team as they continues its impressive run, this time beating Italy 23-16 at Rome's Stadio Flamino. Vamos Los Pumas!!!

Meanwhile, Japan is currently now the hosting the 2006 World Volleyball Championship. Yes,our volley boys are taking part. However it wasn't really a great start for them as they were stunned in their opening match against Puerto Rico 3-2 (19-25, 34-32, 28-26, 21-25, 15-13)

This was followed by another defeat, this time to Poland 3-0 (21-25, 22-25, 22-25). However
they bounced back in their game against China by beating them 3-2 (22-25, 25-21, 17-25, 25-17, 17-15). Next up is against Japan on Tuesday (Nov 21) and final group match against Egypt on Wednesday (Nov 22). Lets hope our volley boys will do well in their remaining games and qualify for the next round.

VAMOS ARGENTINA!!!

First time in almost a week that I have internet access (and a little time) and I've discovered that this turned out to be a great source of info for ME! haha!

Yes...I've found out about a lot of relevant news by reading your comments so I want to thank you for that.

At the moment I'm at Doha where I'll be working during the Asian Games covering the football tournament. This is a tremendous experience for me and so far I'm loving every minute!

It is a bit of a culture shock in the beginning but you get used to it very soon. Especially because the locals make it easier with their incredible generosity and hospitality. They are so polite and good mannered that sometime I get a little bit embarrased thinking I wasn't quite that polite.

And of course I've already met a few Argentina fans!!!! The moment I tell somebody that I'm from Argentina...his face will change and they will start naming great Argentina players which makes me feel great.

Last night at the hotel I was zapping through the various channel and I've got LIVE BROADCAST OF THE BOCA MATCH AGAINST GIMNASIA Y ESGRIMA DE JUJUY!

Isn't that amazing???? I couldn't understand what they were saying because it was in Arabic but the pronuntiation they had when saying surnames and teams was very very clear and I enjoyed the experience a lot!

I'll try and keep you posted with different things happening over here while you keep on updating me on news about Argentina and Argentines all over the World of Sports!

Seba,

Great to know that you’re in Dubai. Hopefully you’ll have a splendid time over there. Here in Malaysia, we’re given three channels specially dedicated to provide exclusive coverage of the Asian Games starting from this Saturday. Some of the events, which I’m keen to watch, will be football and basketball.

Yes, I’ll post any news pertaining to Argentina whenever I come across one. In the meantime, here is some interesting news, which I would like to share with everyone.

2006 Cycling World Cup in Sydney – Argentine duo Sebastian DONADIO and Jorge PI manage clinch third place in the Men’s Madison event.

In the Men’s World Volleyball Championship in Japan, Argentina will take on the host at the Saitama Super Arena, 1300 local time. Lets hope our volley boys will do well, as victory will put us in contention for a place in the next round.

River Plate has rejected Real Madrid’s offer for Gonzalo Higuain. The reason behind this is because River is unhappy with Real initial offer and are demanding for more.

Meanwhile another Argentine player could be joining Gabriel Palleta at Anfield. Liverpool are courting Rosario Central’s young striker Marcos Ruben.

Hi Everybody,

Champions League News…

Lucho GONZALEZ was on target for Porto as they beat CSKA Moscow away by 2-0. Ricardo Quaresme scored the other. Believe or not, according to the statistic which I’ve found from uefa.com, both goals were assisted by non other Lisandro “Licha” LOPEZ!!!

However there was no such luck for Gabriel HEIZE, as Man Utd suffered their second successive defeat, this time to Glasgow Celtic.

Lucas BIGLIA and Nicolas PAREJA were both in action in Anderletch’s 2-2 draw at Lille.

Other Sports

2006 Men’s World Volleyball Championship – Argentina suffered another defeat this time to the host Japan 1-3 (16-25, 25-22, 27-25, 27-25). Now we have no choice but to win against Egypt in order to progress to the next round.

Hi All,

Happy weekend ahead. I would just like to share some absolutely devastating news about Tevez and Mascherano.

Carlos Tevez and Javier Mascherano cannot sign and play for another club this season. FIFA regulations, forbid players from signing and playing for more than two clubs during a 12-month period from July 1st to the June 30th.

Tevez and Mascherano played for Corinthians in July and August before their transfer deadline day move to West Ham, meaning they would not be permitted to sign and play for another club until next July 2007.

I think this is crazy and its not going to do any good for these boys, unless..unless Pardew decides to use them to good effect. Tevez started last week against Chelsea and i read that people were commenting on his lack of quality and not being match sharp, but to those who made those statements, how can you say such things when you dont even give the guy a chance to play regularly. Its just plain rubbish to make such comments and the only way to get match fitness is to feature more for the first team.

Truly Concerned,
Alwin

T and M are in the wrong place at the moment. They are both techniques-based players and joined a team playing mostly physical-based.

Linda said...

Hi everyone! Hope you're all well.

Alwin: Your concerns are correct, IMHO, but I think according to recent press reports things might not be as bad as that. Some people are saying Pardew will give Carlitos and Masche more chances to prove themselves soon, instead of letting them leave. I think this is the correct course of action, obviously, given the fact that both are finally nearing match fitness in terms of the Premiership.
