Will we see Benicio DEL DIEGO soon?

Through a Brazilian sports website I got to an American showbiz portal and the news is about how actor Benicio DEL TORO is the favourite to portray Diego MARADONA in a film about the life of our national team manager.

This is no April's fools joke. I just thought I'd throw this news out.

Benicio already played another Argentine icon such as Ernesto 'Che' GUEVARA and his impression of him, I've got to say it, was sublime.

If you look closely, you'll see he's got some of El Diego's features and he's got my approval, so to speak, to play this part.

No other details about this MARADONA biopic were revealed and we're going to have to wait and see if Benicio becomes yet another one of the 'New MARADONA'.

Here's a link to the website with the story.

  1. Benicio Del Toro is an awesome actor... but he's 6' 2". A bit too tall to potray Maradona if you ask me. I'd think Wilmer Valderrama will suit better. Plus he's younger. But then he's not that great an actor...

  3. Sreenivas, you've got a point there. But through the magic of cinema, I think they can somehow hide that height difference and do a lot of close-ups!

Wilmer VALDERRAMA? He should get a blonde curly wig and do a film about his Colombian legend namesake!

And yes, Sirus, MARADONA BY KUSTURICA is a very good film indeed.

  4. There has already been a film about Diego made called 'Maradona: The Hand of God'. My brother (Mike) bought it for my father last year for his birthday. It is actually pretty good. Here is the trailer for anyone who hasn't seen it....

  6. Benicio De Toro is a mountain of a man. But he's genius enough to play someone like Diego.

  10. I'll keep you guys posted. What I really want to do is watch an Arg practice. Even more than a game. If I do get a pic with leo the lion, I'll send it to the blog :)

  11. I have friends in South Africa - Cape Town - and they said that you can possibly get tickets while there. I'm really going as a tourist to capetown and the vinyards and visit friends, but times it to be in SA for the elimination rounds. I'm going to at least go to the "olympic park" and try to get into practices.

  12. Felicitaciones Paulina! We are all so jealous of you! Believe me!

Mission 1: A picture with MESSI

Mission 2: At least a couple of pics for Mundo as our 'borrowed' special correspondent there.

Mission 3: A picture with MESSI and the World Cup trophy. Please.

  13. I'll do my best, Seba. Especially on the last one :)

Truthfully - the reason I made the decision to be there is because watching on TV , during the last world cup, was so intense and ultimately devastating that I decided that I had to actually go - because at least i'd take part in the spectacle.

I still remember how awful it was when Ecuador was knocked out, and the Arg elimination was something that I still can't quite get over (the way it happened).

So at least now I'll hopefully partake and make it an experience. Lost winded explanation to say that - yes -- I'm going to try to hunt down leo and ask for a pic.

Del Toro makes no sense to me. However, it beats George Lopez.
