I would like to thank everyone who voted for the "Pick your strikers" debate. I'll be honest, I didn't expect that many votes. Thank you everyone! John and I didn't post our votes yet, so here they are.
John: Diego MILITO, Gonzalo HIGUAIN, Lionel MESSI, Carlos TEVEZ, Sergio AGUERO and Hernan CRESPO.
Roy: Sergio AGUERO, Gonzalo HIGUAIN, Lisandro LOPEZ, Lionel MESSI, Diego MILITO and Carlos TEVEZ.
I haven't spoken to Seba yet, but I imagine it would be something like this:
Seba: Diego MILITO, Diego MILITO, Diego MILITO, Diego MILITO, Diego MILITO and Diego MILITO.
It's time for the midfielders! Obviously this list has alot more players, so instead of picking 6 midfielders, you can pick 7 midfielders. We decided on 6 strikers, 7 midfielders, 7 defenders and 3 goalkeepers. Before I begin:
NOTE: I decided to include Alejandro DOMINGUEZ in the midfielders list instead of the strikers, even if he is more of a striker than a midfielder. Also, I did NOT including RIQUELME for obviousy reasons. It doesn't matter if RIQUELME gets a vote from everyone here who votes, he will not be included in the final list. This list might have a few surprises, but I wanted to try and include as many as I could without forgetting anyone. Some have only been capped once, some haven't been capped in a while, but I tried to get as many in there as possible. Again, you can pick SEVEN(7) players from this list.

the 7 i would like to see go to the wc are
ReplyDeleteperotti
mascherano
aimar
benega
di maria
cambiasso
pastore
the reserves are gutierrez and d,alessandro for injuries.
i would also have messi back as he does for barca in-effect on the right with saviola and hig up front not messi behind the front 2 but if he gets marked out of a game then messi to the middle again as barca do sometimes.
Pablo AIMAR
ReplyDeleteEsteban CAMBIASSO
Angel DI MARIA
Javier MASCHERANO
Diego PEROTTI
Maxi RODRIGUEZ
Juan Sebastian VERON
Craig from Canada
Midfielders:
ReplyDeleteAngel Di Maria
Javier Mascherano
Pablo Aimar
Jonas Gutierrez
Ever Banega
Lucho Gonzalez
Esteban Cambiasso
First of all, I don't think Maradona will take 6 strikers and just 7 midfielders to the WC. I could be wrong but that would be inefficient.
ReplyDeletePekerman had 6 forwards because he has a tendency to always change his line up. Also, check out his WCY squad in his era, he ALWAYS used all of his players.
There was no need to call Palacio in 2006, but he did so and did use him for several minutes in a game that he knew that we would win against Ivory Coast. All of 6 of his forwards were all playing in the WC.
Maradona's case is different though. He loves Messi and I think he would never substitute Messi in any single Argentina game. That means that Higuain will compete with 4 other forwards just for 1 spot? I don't think that's smart. Yes maybe we need 3 forwards altogether if we need a goal, but come on...5 are enough. Let's say Messi, Higuain, and Tevez on the pitch with Aguero and Lavezzi on the bench are enough.
I think it's more likely we would have 8 midfielders instead, but since we are asked to vote for 7 midfielders here, then here is my vote: Mascherano, Banega, Bolatti, Veron, Gutierrez, Di Maria, Aimar. Perotti would be my eigth man supposed there is the 8th midfielder.
Mascherano
ReplyDeleteBanega
Aimar
Cambiasso
Di Maria
Perotti
Datolo
Since Riquelme isn't there, my choices are gonna be: Aimar, Banega, Cambiasso, Mascherano, Di Maria, Perotti/Datolo(very confused to pick who), Maxi. I didn't pick Jonas here coz I think he should play as right-back...
ReplyDeleteLol I made up my mind. I would pick Datolo over Perotti coz Datolo is always excellent and flamboyant when he plays in the NT and scored a couple of cracking goals.
ReplyDeleteMascherano
ReplyDeleteBanega
Cambiasso
Bolatti
Di Maria
Jonas
Aimar
Pastore
Strikers:
Aguero
Messi
Lavezzi
Higuain
Barrios
I like Perotti but i dont see him playing all over the place like Jonas does and id like to have someone that does that on the team
mascherano,cambiasso,pastore,banega,veron,di maria,aimar
ReplyDeleteMy choice:
ReplyDeleteMascherano
Aimar
Banega
Di Maria
Cambiasso
Perotti
Lucho
Maradona's choice
Mascherano
Aimar
Bollati
Di Maria
Veron
Brana
Datalo
This is a little tougher than picking the strikers but here are my seven....
ReplyDeletePablo Aimar
Esteban Cambiasso
Angel Di Maria
Maxi Rodriguez
Jesus Datolo (he isn't an outstanding player and doesn't even do much for Napoli but I would select him on the national team for the reasons LM10ARG listed)
Ever Banega
Juan Sebastian Veron
If an injury were to occur I would call up Mascherano. I would normally pick him in my seven but I feel he hasn't done enough for the national team in the second half of qualification.
Side note: Higuian scored an absolute beautful goal today and Messi got another hat trick.
Final List:
ReplyDeletePablo Aimar
Ever Banega
Esteban Cambiasso
Angel Di Maria
Javier Mascherano
Maxi Rodriguez
Juan Veron
Final List:
ReplyDeletePablo Aimar
Ever Banega
Esteban Cambiasso
Angel Di Maria
Javier Mascherano
Maxi Rodriguez
Juan Veron
i like both these players but i cant believe people still pick maxi and veron.
ReplyDeletemaxi is having a horrible season for both am (they want rid of him) and for the nt and veron sadly is just a little to slow for the big games eg the cup final vs barca and those who saw it would have to agree and remember we will be playing players just like xavi, inester etc.
players should always be picked on form and not on reputation.
remember this is our team not what diago would pick and as just a thought for the final picks what about the coach to lead us ie some will elect for maradona or maybe peckerman, bilardo etc etc
Mascherano
ReplyDeleteCambiasso
Andel Di Maria
Lucho Gonzalez
Perotti
Banega
Aimar
AIMAR
ReplyDeleteGAGO
DI MARIA
MAXI
JONAS
MASCHERANO
VERON
My pick
ReplyDelete(with a diamond 4)
Pablo AIMAR
Angel DI MARIA
Javier MASCHERANO
Juan Sebastian VERON
Jesus DATOLO
Lucho GONZALEZ
Esteban CAMBIASSO
I think this is the easiest of the lot.The players pick themselves.
ReplyDeleteJavier Mascherano
Esteban Cambiasso
Ever Banega
Maxi Rodriguez
Lucho Gonzalez
Angel Di Maria
Jonas Gutierrez/Pablo Aimar
Notable Absentees include
Gago
Bollatti
Pastore
Perotti
and a lot more...
Esteban CAMBIASSO (Defensive)
ReplyDeleteJavier MASCHERANO (Defensive)
Angel DI MARIA (Offensive)
Pablo AIMAR (Offensive)
Juan VERON (Both)
Lucho GONZALEZ (Both)
Ever BANEGA (Both)
tough to make a choice but still:
ReplyDeletePablo Aimar
Esteban Cambiasso
Jonas Gutierrez
Javier Mascherano
Mario Bolatti
Federico Insua
Diego Perotti
although i would really like to see insua play defense
Pablo Aimar, Ever Banega, Esteban Cambiasso, Angel di Maria, Javier Mascherano, Lucho Gonzales, Maxi Rodriguez
ReplyDelete- Banega (starter)
ReplyDelete- Mascherano (starter)
- Cambiasso
- Pastore
- DiMaria (starter)
- Lucho
- Aimar
But 7 midfielders is very low number. i think more will be involved.
mascherano
ReplyDeletecambiasso
di maria
aimar
banega
perotti
lucho
Oh this is gonna to be interesting! My list is
ReplyDelete1- Javier Mascherano
2- Esteban Cambiasso
3- Ever Banega
4- Angel Di Maria
5- Pablo Aimar
6- Diego Perroti
7- Jonas Guiterrez
It seems odd that Veron didn't make my list but i think Banega is much more effective than him in playmaking. I would have liked to include Pastore, but currently I don't think he's done enough to get the call. Jesus Datolo is a pretty good substitute left Midfielder but Perrotti is better. Maxi Rodrriguez is not the same player he was 4 years ago. Nothing can beat my attack and midfield team :)
My choice:
ReplyDeleteMascherano
Aimar
Banega
Di Maria
Cambiasso
Maxi Rodriguez
Lucho
* Pablo AIMAR : Him and Banega are the most creative playmakers we have, definitely in.
ReplyDelete* Ever BANEGA : Proving his talent this season and becoming one of the best playmakers in Europe. Amazing ball control, skill, vision and defensive qualities... would definitely assist a few chances or goals per game. For me he's definitely in.
Sebastian BATTAGLIA : Too average.. not NT material.
Mario BOLATTI : Good potential, but for me he hasnt really proved himself yet. Gives away the ball quite often.. but im sure he'll improve once he moves to Europe one day.
Rodrigo BRANA : Another one of Diego's joke picks.
* Esteban CAMBIASSO : ESSENTIAL for our NT... in my opinion, our best DM. He's way more volatile, disciplined and experienced than Mascherano. Definitely in.
Andres D'ALESSANDRO : His days with the NT are over. His lack of discipline and big head stand in the way of his vast talent. Too bad...
Jesus DATOLO : Well, not the most talented midfielder we have though he's always been effective when on the field (assists and goals). However, in my opinion that's not really enough to merit a place in the team. I think if i was a superstitious person then i'd pick him... but im not.
* Angel DI MARIA : Nobody can argue that he's as important as Messi in our NT.. such an amazing and exciting player. Knowing he's on the field always gives you hope of chances and goals to come at any minute. Definitely in.
Alejandro DOMINGUEZ : Very good player, however he's yet to debut for the NT and still needs to prove himself at Valencia before we can officially say he's NT material. Plus, he's more of a forward than a midfielder.
Fernando GAGO : Not even bench NT bench material these days.. what a waste of potential.
* Juan Sebastian VERON : Every NT must have an older, experienced player among it's ranks. His ball control, passing ability, midfield control and experience are vital. He might not be young or worthy of being a starter, but his qualities are very important to have as an option.
* Lucho GONZALEZ : The closest thing we have to a Veron/Riquelme type of player. He should be included for the same reasons Veron should be included, except that he's much younger, energetic and gets more goals. Definitely in.
Jonas GUTIERREZ : I never liked him as a midfielder, but the one time i actually started to like him was when Diego put him as a right back against Peru. For me, his passing and ball skills are zero. However his defensive qualities are great, plus he's good at running and crossing at times, so he'd be my pick only as a right back.. nothing more.
Federico INSUA : I always liked this player, but i can never figure out why he always failed to shine. Too bad..
* Javier MASCHERANO : Although i feel Cambiasso is WAY better than him, i cant deny he's one of the best DM's playing in Europe. I'd start Esteban instead of Javier, but he'd surely be a good option in our NT. Definitely in... as long as he plays better than he has been lately.
Daniel MONTENEGRO : When i first saw him at the Toulon tournament many years back, i expected SOOO much from him. But for some reason he just never cut it.
Javier PASTORE : A great playmaker with soooo much potential. However i think he's still a bit too young and lacks the needed experience just yet. Definitely a future prospect for our NT team though. I have no doubt he'll be in the 2014 WC.
Diego PEROTTI : If we had to pick 8 players, he'd be my 8th. Excellent player, but there's already Di Maria on the left wing. However i think he'll definitely be in the 2014 WC.
Maxi RODRIGUEZ : I guess we all cant believe what's become of Maxi lately. He was arguably our best player in the last WC. I just hope his imminent move to Liverpool turns out to be the right spark he needs to regain his old form and confidence. If that happens, i'd reconsider him in my 7 player selection for sure.
I going with the following. I am a believer that experience plays heavily into winning matches. The other factor to consider is how well do these player know each other
ReplyDeletePablo AIMAR - Is playing very well at Benfica and has a style of his own.
Ever BANEGA - I think that he is the future of the Argentine midfield with Mascherano
Lucho GONZALEZ - An incredible workhorse
Jonas GUTIERREZ - He is a player that leaves everything on the field every game. Reminds me of Sorin
Javier MASCHERANO - One of the best defensive midfielders in the world
Maxi RODRIGUEZ - We know we can come through when needed.
Juan Sebastian VERON - Doesn't need any comments
I would like to edit my previous selection. The beers I was having in the afternoon must have gotten to my head. I would switch Mascherano and Veron's positions. Leaving Veron as a reserve call up and bringing Mascherano to South Africa.
ReplyDeleteStarting mid field would look one of two ways....
Two defensive mids in the middle (Cambiasso-Mascherano) and two attacking mids on the wings (Di Maria - Maxi)
OR
Diamond formation with Cambiasso in the back, Di Maria and MAxi on the wings with Aimar setting up the forwards.
Pablo AIMAR
ReplyDeleteEver BANEGA
Esteban CAMBIASSO
Javier MASCHERANO
Angel DIMARIA
Lucho GONZALEZ
Maxi RODRIGUEZ
Javier PASTORE would be my 8th
Jonas GUTIERREZ (as right back as well, great hussle on defense)
Pablo Aimar
ReplyDeleteEver Banega
Esteban Cambiasso
Javier Mascherano
Angel Di Maria
Maxi Rodriguez
Alejandro Dominguez
Agree with Jonas as a RB.

Pablo Aimar
ReplyDeleteAngel Di Maria
Javier Mascherano
Esteban Cambiasso
Éver Banega
Jonas Gutierrez
Javier Pastore
oh and Román :)
My Picks:
ReplyDeleteAimar
Veron/Banega
Cambiasso
Di Maria
Lucho
Mascherano
Perotti
With the line up looking more like this:
--Aimar--
--Di Maria-- --Lucho--
--Masche--
Veron gets my vote over Banega on the bench simply because Veron adds value to the team as the locker room leader who everyone respects while Banega won't see much playing time and won't have much impact on the bench (we all know Maradona won't play him) as a leader.
