Dominguez Earns First Call-Up

Coach Diego MARADONA has completed the names of home based players for the upcoming World Cup Qualifier against Brazil on Saturday and Paraguay four days later.

The most notable inclusion is Sebastian DOMINGUEZ who has been given his first call-up to the national squad. The defender who plays for champions Velez Sarsfield will be joined by club teammate Nicolas OTAMENDI and Emiliano PAPA.

The other names are midfielder Sebastian BATTAGLIA (Boca), Eduardo SALVIO (Lanus), playmaker Juan Sebastian VERON (Estudiantes) and Huracan midfielder Mario BOLATTI.

SALVIO made his national team debut in a friendly against Panama in May while
BOLATTI made his debut earlier this month, when Argentina defeated Russia 3-2 in a friendly match in Moscow.

VERON meanwhile, will join the squad even though he was substituted in the second half of the Apertura derby that Estudiantes won 3-0 over old enemies Gimnasia y Esgrima La Plata with a minor leg injury.

Newcastle midfielder Jonas GUTIERREZ has already left the squad due to injury.

With the names of the full squad completed, in your own opinion; who do you think will Diego named in the starting line up come this weekend.

  1. There is no way I see Maradona playing with 3 defenders against Brazil they are two fast on the counter and very strong on the ball. Most likely a
4-4-2 is what he will choose but I don't know, Seba what has the local media been hinting?

The team that I think Maradona will call is this (4-4-2)
    ---------------Andujar----------------
    -Zanetti---Otamendi-Burdisso(or Pareja)---Heinze
    --------------Mascherano-------------
    -------Maxi-----------------Datolo-----
    -----------------Veron---------------
    ------------Messi---Pick Anyother Striker--

Either way I am happy to see Salvio get a call. Maybe he can play on the wing as a sub for some great pace and creatvity

  2. Dave, I doubt Veron will start. He has a knock on his leg and is likely to be a substitute(if that). I'd like to see Messi get give kind of a free role behind 2 strikers(either Licha/Milito or Licha/Tevez or whoever). Not sure if that's going to happen.

its so weird... a few weeks ago, in reference to calling Higuain, Diego gave the excuse of having no space for another forward other than the ones he has. Today he has just called Salvio! Not denying Salvio's quality, but come on... next in line should be Higuain or Zarate! :/ Plus, i think he should stop calling Lavezzi.. he hasnt been very convincing recently.

As for the line-up, from the players called up, here's what i hope to see:

    -------------Andujar---------

    Zanetti--Otamendi--Burdisso--Heinze

    -------------Mascherano------------

    ----Messi------Veron------Datolo

    --------Lisandro----Milito-------

  4. Roy yeah I forgot about the Veron knock...I would love to see Messi drop back into that free attacking midfielder role that would be great. Maybe start Licha and Tevez or Licha and Milito. I feel like Licha needs to play his form with Lyon is unreal right now.

I think this is what Diego will use

    -------------Andujar
    Zanetti--Dominguez--Otamendi--Heinze

    -------Masche--Bolatti
    Messi/Maxi------------Datolo

    ------Millito---Aguero/Messi

According to Diego he hinted at using Salvio as a right midfielder! so maybe hes not so convinced with Maxi lately since he has been terrible for a while

  6. I would love to see Salvio start on the wing over maxi

  7. Salvio is someone for the future, but not now. Don't get me wrong, I think he was our best player in the South American U20 Cup last January, but he still has alot to improve. He's too selfish on the ball, shoots when he shouldn't, doesn't make the right pass, ect...

As for who should start on the wing instead of Maxi, maybe Messi? I wouldn't mind seeing something like this...

    Zanetti-Burdisso-Pareja-Heinze
    Mascherano-Gago
    Messi-Veron-Datolo
    Lopez

    OR

    Zanetti-Burdisso-Pareja-Heinze
    Messi-Veron-Mascherano-Datolo
    Lopez-Tevez/Milito

But I kind of prefer the first one since our midfield doesn't have much defensive coverage(in the second formation) aside from Mascherano. And we're going to need that defensive coverage.
