What's going on this week at Mundo Albiceleste

As Seba mentioned, it's a key week for Argentina. If it's a key week for Argentina, it's a key week for Mundo Albiceleste.

We mentioned in the latest podcast that we're going to have a few things going on this week here at Mundo Albiceleste. After starting the week with a monumental post by Seba concerning Argentina, it's time for a post(not nearly as close as being monumental in length) on what's happening this week on Mundo Albiceleste.

All eyes will be on Diego come Tuesday as he will be releasing his preliminary list of 30 players. And we here at Mundo Albiceleste are no different. The list is expected to be released by Diego at the latest by May 11, midnight GMT.

However, instead of just posting the list here at Mundo, we're going to be holding a live chat on Tuesday which will be culminating in the list being released. I mentioned earlier that Diego has until midnight GMT to release the list, but the chat will begin hours before the deadline. Starting at 3:00PM Eastern, 4:00PM Buenos Aires, noon Pacific, we will be holding a live chat. This way you guys can join us, give us your thoughts on who you think will make the list, who will miss out and get the news right away as it's released.

Once the list is released, it doesn't mean the news stops there. As always, we'll be giving our thoughts on the players picked, the players left out and everything else. This will come via written and audio form. By audio form, I of course mean a podcast. Seba, John and I will review the list in deep length and everything else that has to do with Argentina. The exact date of when the podcast will be made available has yet to be decided.

Of course your thoughts are all welcomed and encouraged. Whether it be in the comments box or even an e-mail you would like for us to read during the podcast. To drop us an e-mail, send us your comments to mundo.albiceleste@gmail.com.

The European season also comes to an end this weekend(save for the Champions League final) and as usual we'll keep you updated on what's going on with our players.

  2. Yes, amigos, we will be here all along because we know what it is to be so close to knowing the 30 names and having nobody to discuss it with.

    We will be together here.

Speaking of list of 30, I would HATE IT if our list looked anything like what Vicente DEL BOSQUE has announced today for Spain. Not because of the names (there are some brilliant players there, of course), but because of the distribution.

    30 players distributed like this:

5 goalkeepers (FIVE???? Are you serious?)
    8 defenders
    8 midfielders
    9 forwards

Totally unbalanced and horribly distributed if you ask me.

Why taking 5 GKs? Why? There is no possible reason for that. Iker CASILLAS, Pepe REINA and Victor VALDES are three solid enough options for you. I would accept if you want to take a 4th just in case one of the other three gets injured (even though you have until 24hs before your World Cup debut to call up an emergency keeper if you need one and he doesn't necessarily have to be in this list of 30). But why do you call up 5 to the list of 30?

It could be that DEL BOSQUE is undecided with his forwards and that he needs to study the players in that area a little bit more. But don't you think 9 forwards is way too much?

How many will you play at the same time? 1 or 2. 3 tops. And you play 4 defenders at all times and probably 4 or even 5 midfielders too.

So having 8 defenders and 8 midfielders seems a bit thin, though I'm thinking DEL BOSQUE will eventually cut 2 GK, 1 DF, 1 MF and 3 forwards.

That said...I'd hate it if Diego's list is distributed like that.

    Here's Spain's list:

    Porteros
Iker Casillas Fernández (Real Madrid CF)
David De Gea Quintana (Club Atlético de Madrid, SAD)
Diego López Rodríguez (Villareal CF SAD)
    José Manuel Reina Páez (Liverpool)
    Víctor Valdés Arribas (FC Barcelona)

    Defensas
Raúl Albiol Tortajada (Real Madrid CF)
Alvaro Arbeloa Coca (Real Madrid CF)
César Azpilicueta Tanco (Club Atlético Osasuna)
Joan Capdevila Méndez (Villarreal CF, SAD)
Carlos Marchena López (Valencia CF, SAD)
    Gerard Pique Bernabéu (FC Barcelona)
    Carles Puyol Saforcada (FC Barcelona)
    Sergio Ramos García (Real Madrid)

    Centrocampistas
Xabier Alonso Olano (Real Madrid CF)
    Sergio Busquets Burgos (FC Barcelona)
Francesc “Cesc” Fabregas Soler (Arsenal FC)
    Andrés Iniesta Lujan (FC Barcelona)
    Javier Martínez Aguinaga (Athletic Club)
Marcos Antonio Senna Da Silva (Villarreal CF, SAD)
David Jiménez Silva (Valencia CF, SAD)
    Xavier Hernández Creus (FC Barcelona)

    Delanteros
Santiago Cazorla González (Villarreal CF, SAD)
Jesús Navas González (Sevilla FC SAD)
Juan Manuel Mata García (Valencia CF, SAD)
    Pedro Rodríguez Ledesma (FC Barcelona)
    Daniel González Güiza (Fenerbache SK)
    Fernando Llorente Torres (Athletic Club)
Alvaro Negredo Sánchez (Sevilla FC SAD)
    Fernando Torres Sanz (Liverpool FC)
David Villa Sánchez (Valencia CF, SAD)

  3. Sebastian-->

Cazorla, Navas, Mata and Pedro are wide midfield players. i do not know why they are listed as strikers but clearly they are not. so the distribution looks ok for me with the exception of the 5 GKs of course. This squad looks scary by the way.

thats a list of someone trying to look scary to other managers oh look at are talent are scorers

all i see is a list by someone hiding fear

there forwards are no match for ares and i think are solid back line with some time to unite are going to own this summer brick wall infront of goal

  5. I honestly believe that Argentina has more talant then Spain. But Spain are more coherent as a team. But of course that depends on the team Diego chooses.

O am really anixious over the first 30 players. I truly think Diego will surprise us with one or two players. Do not be surprised if you see a Saviola, Banega or Lucho in the team.

I also do think Diego will choose four keepers. I only hope that Cambiasso, Zanetti, Milito make the team.

I believe these are the one that are certain.

    Certain

    Romero
    Andujar

    Demi
    Samuel
    Heinze
    Otamendi
    Burdisso

    Veron
    Di Maria
    Macherano
    Jonas
    Pastore

    Messi
    Higuain
    Tevez
    Aguero

    Likely

    Pozo
    Zanetti
    Mercier
    Palermo
    Sosa

    Outside chance

    Cambiasso
    Milito
    Aimar
    Gamberini
    Clemente R
    G Milito
    Gago

    Tomorow we shall see.

[Its sth about alfio basile's son or himself accusing maradona and veron of sth]

I just hope its another pointless feud cause the last thing we want is for non-football thing to f*** us now.

    Don't know how much of this article holds water but still a good read;

Sry for posting too many links but I am pretty darn nervous here ;).

    Vamos Argentina

(Here's hoping Diego will think a bit more with his head then his heart for a while)

  8. I came across this blog looking exactly for something like this --although I did not know whether such thing actually existed. GREAT JOB guys: you are well informed and respectful of your readers (hopefully readers will pay in kind), and it is obvious that you do this job from heart. Keep it up! Around here (small university town in California) one often feels "thirsty" for this kind of forum; not having all the time in the world to follow up Argentinean news --much less ARG soccer news-- it is nice to see people like you keeping us posted. I will check in often and pass the blog info on to others.

On a related note, thank you p2bn for the link you posted above; I read the article and I certainly recommend it. In my humble opinion, the author is right on track about his appreciations of Maradona's biased criteria for selecting some players (and pretty much sacrificing others in the process). Yet, "Maradona = rational choice" is virtually an oxymoron. I sincerely hope that when we get the final names revealed on May 11 we will learn that true professionalism trumped mere "amiguismo," and that the best chances of success for the national team prevailed in Maradona's final choice to represent his quad (his country's squad, that is).

  10. What a heart-warming message, LZ! Thanks for that and welcome to Mundo Albiceleste.

We hope you enjoy the ride.

Hope you can make it for Tuesday afternoon (I'm guessing it'll be more noon than after for you in California), but if you can make it, we will be chatting live with you covering all the latest news about the list of 30 players that Diego will announce.

Regarding the anonymous who posted just before I did, the list is not out yet. It's just speculation by La Nación (canchallena.com). They are just speculating.

That information is covered (along with some more) in my latest post.

Thanks for the links, p2bn. I will give them a read.

    See you guys later.
