One week to know the 30 players pre-selected

As informed here on Mundo Albiceleste some time ago, Diego Armando MARADONA has to announce a list of 30 players in order for them to have all the paperwork ready for when the FIFA World Cup arrives (namely: accreditation and all the bureaucratic papers) by May 10 (next Monday). After that, seven names will be cut by June 1 and those seven players will be on stand-by from the moment the final list is unveiled and until the start of the World Cup because they could be called in case of injury or emergency.

Nothing has changed dramatically since we last spoke about this. I mean...the players that were performing at a great level, are still doing it and those who failed to show their credentials, are still far from getting into Diego's consideration. And then...there are those who have been brilliant and unbelievably are still out of MARADONA's radar.

Being so close to the day when Diego will reveal the 30 names that will still be in contention for the World Cup and with that kill all hope to the rest of the Argentine-born footballers in activity, sure makes me nervous.

I think Mundo Albiceleste serves as a great example of how difficult it is to please everybody. Diego will be absolutely hated by fans of this or that player if he gets the axe and invariably, we will see that situation developing. As a matter of fact, it'll be much more difficult to find one fan who will be 100% in agreement with MARADONA (same thing will happen with fans and managers of pretty much every other national team).

Imagine what it is when you take the heated discussions that take place here on this blog between 20-50 people to a whole country with a well-earned reputation of being home to 50 million football coaches? It is going to be tasty, to say the least.

What we need to see is if whether the recent run, especially for those reaching the UEFA Champions League semifinals and finals are going to have an impact in Diego's decisions.

We all know who are those players with two feet on the plane that will take our team to South Africa.

What I want you to tell me is who do you think would be the single most important player that you think will get ignored by MARADONA?

And also...who of those who appear to be certainties on our World Cup Squad would you rather leave out to make room for the player you named when you answered the previous question?

Multiple answers are allowed.

Thanks in advance for sharing your views with us.

  1. most important player to be left out: easy: Banega. he is the only player who can be a decent deep playmaker.

the player likely to be selected but not play as a starter: Pastore. with Banega and Pastore together we would have a very creative midfield that can supply Messi, Higuain/Milito, DiMaria/Tevez.

But i am prepared to be disappointed once again by the idiotic maradona.

  2. I pray its not Javier Zanetti, he better be on the team.

  3. I think the most important players to be left out are (several):

    Zanetti
    Cambiasso
    Aimar
    Zabaleta
    Banega

There are no good replacements for Mascherano, Jonas, Veron when injured or booked. I hope at least he brings Gago, who finally got back in form lately, he could play in Mascherano's position.

Banega and Zanetti would be the worst for me if they didn't get called, The good thing is that they're both still in consideration and let's hope when they get to the training camp of 30 diego will see what good players they are. I have given up on the hopes of Aimar, Cambiasso, Lucho,Maxi, Perrotti (there's still a chance) Garay, guys who would all be great additions. But no, veron must go, heinze is a "leader", and gutierrez is a lock. It's just shere frustration, but don't get me wrong when all of those guys take the field agianst Nigeria i will have full confidence in them.

oh and to explain why i picked that 23, 2 out of 3 of otamendi zanetti and angeleri will go, the other defenders are a lock. I've been reading Otamendi hasn't been playing too consistenly and is off form, and Diego said he's still considering Zanetti. I'm sure angeleri will go he has pace power and is versetile. In the midfield I think diego will either go with either lavezzi as another attacking option or bolatti to have another defensive midfielder. Sosa and Perroti are very similar players so i really don't know which one diego will pick but one of them will go. Our forwards are pretty much set and stone which is good because that's the best part of our roster. 38 days to go can't tell you how excited i am!

  11. Banega. No sign that he is going to go. Not only a very good playmaker but has great skills on defense. A very versatile player. Boca played him once or twice at fullback, due to injuries, and he played well. He probably never kissed up to Diego enough when he was at Boca.

Who to leave off ? Aguero. Great talent, but inconsistent and selfish.

I think Banega will go. I really do and i heard that Diego is starting to consider him to lets see what happens.

  13. My main concern is our backline. I know it would be nice to have Banega or Aimar as a play maker but with players like Di Maria, Messi, Higuian and Tevez, we shouldn't be all that nervous about our attack.

I still don't see the need for four centre backs when we could be using Zanetti on the right side. I'd even be content with a back line of...
Zanetti-Demichelis-Samuel-Heinze. But why Otamendi? I'm sure the kid is great in the Argentine league (haven't really seen him play other than the national team). I think he is just too young and inexperienced to go to a World Cup, especially playing out of position. I'm sure he would be great in Brazil 2014 or even next years Copa America but please not South Africa! G. Milito would also be a nice addition in the middle but I think Demichelis and Samuel are going to be pretty solid for us.

  15. IF Diego leaves out Zanetti, he is the most important player ignored. He should be there in stead of Otamendi, Clemente, Angeleri and pretty much anyone else.
But if he includes Zanetti in his squad, I think Cambiasso is the most important player ignored. He is simply one of the best holding midfielders in the world. I'd pick him in stead of both Bolatti and Veron.

    ReplyDelete
  16. Well I'm not going to think too much so I believe it's going to be ZANETTI, CAMBIASSO and Lisandro LOPEZ.

Next to them, could be AIMAR and BANEGA.

In the world of football there are countless examples of superstition by its practitioners and followers. Indeed, there can scarcely be another discipline in which oddities and coincidences are so often seen as portents of professional success or failure. A case in point is the 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa™ which, if superstitious Argentinian fans are to be believed, is predestined to be claimed by their country. Sceptical? Well, take a look at the omens before you decide, from a 24-year hex and an Academy Award coincidence to a sign from the world of tennis.

    Agony and ecstasy
First consider a number of startling similarities between 1986, when La Albicelete won their second world title, and 2010. In the qualifying tournament ahead of the finals in Mexico, the South Americans only secured their passage in the very last game against Peru, when a late winner finally ended the agony. The scorer of that priceless goal at the Estadio Monumental was Ricardo Gareca, a tall, blonde-haired local striker. Of course any parallels between that and what Martin Palermo did in torrential rain against the same opponents last year is pure chance, or is it?

While doubters can argue that coincidences like that are not usual, especially over a period of 24 years, even that number would appear to be loaded with significance. Twenty-four years was precisely the length of Brazil’s famous world-title drought (1970-94), when they came up short time and time again despite having some of the most gifted squads ever assembled. Italy, another giant of the world game, had to endure a similar wait after their triumph at Spain 1982. In the ensuing 24 years, the Azzurri went out on penalties in the last-four on home soil in 1990, before suffering the same fate four years later in the decider against Brazil. This June it will be 24 years since Argentina’s last coronation. What price it happening a third time?

    ReplyDelete
  18. Anonymous10:36 am

It is also worth noting that the last time La Albiceleste lifted the world crown, Italy were the reigning champions. And who will be hoping to defend their title in South Africa? None other than the Azzurri. And if that were not enough, Argentina were chosen to host the Copa America the year after their 1986 triumph. No prizes for guessing where the continental championship is being held in 2011.

    A prize-winning year
“In 86 we had [Diego] Maradona, and now we have [Lionel] Messi,” Argentina’s General Manager Carlos Bilardo told FIFA.com after the Final Draw in Cape Town last December. Nor did it go unnoticed by Argentinian fans that one of countries grouped with them for the South Africa showpiece was Korea Republic, a team they also shared a group with in 1986.

Though Bilardo, a superstitious type if ever there was one, noted his side again possessed the game’s leading player heading into the tournament, he modestly failed to mention another common denominator, namely himself. As head coach in 1986, he steered Maradona and Co to glory in Mexico and will doubtless be drawing on that experience come June.

Of course, the final decisions in South Africa will rest with El Diez, who almost everyone agrees has a talented enough squad to trouble any team at the finals. That said, anyone seeking to take comfort from non-footballing omens does not have far to look. In 1986, for example, La Historia Oficial became the first Argentinian film to win the Best Foreign Language Film at the Academy Awards. The documentary, directed by Luis Puenzo, included a supporting role for a young boy named Pablo Rago. Coincidentally, Rago also starred in El Secreto de Sus Ojos (The Secret in Their Eyes), the Argentinian film that scooped the very same Oscar at this year’s Awards!

Nor do the coincidences end there. At the time of their last world title, Modesto Vazquez was captain of the country’s Davis Cup tennis team, a distinction he holds again this year. And historians among you will need no reminding that every time FIFA’s flagship tournament has been held outside Europe, the winners have been South American.

Of course, we all know that the destination of 2010 crown will be decided by purely footballing matters, don’t we?

    LOVE THE CAPS GUY

  22. my perfect line-up would be:

    ----------Romero----
    Jonas-Samuel-Demichiles-zanetti
    -----Mascherano---Banega--------
    -----------Pastore----------
    ------Messi----DiMaria----
    -----------Higuain------

a near perfect mix of creativity and defensive balance.

    subs:
    - Milito brothers
    - Cambiasso
    - Tevez
    - Veron (just in case)
    - Zarate (still conviced he can be leathal - edges Lopez for me)
    - Zabaleta (only decent wing back cover)

of course will never happen, just dreaming :)

  23. Off Topic-Nico Gaitan to Benfica. Another Argentino connection for Benfica. A really talented kid with great attacking ability. He has suffered a little with the Boca mess recently, but with some better coaching, and more discipline, he could be a highlight player. Needs to focus more on results and less on looking good. He and Di Maria make two talented, but immature, peas in a pod.

  24. My guess of the 23 member squad based on Maradona's comments

    Romero,Andujar,Pozo

    Samuel,Demicheles,Burdisso,Heinze,Otamendi,Angeleri,Clemente

    Mascherano,Veron,Bollati,Gago,Jonas,Di Maria,Sosa

    Messi,Aguero,Tevez,Higuain,Palermo,Lavezzi

    My 23 will be

    Romero,Andujar,Ustari

    Samuel,Demicheles,Burdisso,G.Milito,Zanetti,Angeleri,Zabaleta

    Mascherano,Aimar,Pastore,Banega,Perotti,Di Maria,Cambiasso

    Messi,Aguero,Tevez,Higuain,Milito,Lavezzi

    My 11

    ----------Romero----
    Zabaleta -Samuel-Milito-zanetti
    -----Mascherano---Banega--------
    -----------Aimar----------
    ------Messi----Tevez----
    -----------Higuain-----

My 3 subs: Pastore,DiMaria and Milito

    Mohd
Pastore is doing great in organizing attack but he seldom defends. Am sure with experience he is going to be world class. Watching DiMaria play week in - week out, I am still not convinced with his ability to share the ball or his accuracy in front of goal. No comments on Jonas. Personally I hate his game. Just because he keeps running doesn't mean he deserves a place in the team or he is passionate. He just doesnt have the flavor of Argentine football. Absolute zero in his ability to pass or hold the ball.

  25. I believe that Banega will be the most important missing player that will miss the squad...
I would rather leave out Otamendi. He's just not good! I would like Zanetti to take back his deserved right back position.

We just may get Riquelme back. I heard a radio show tonight which this could actually happen. I think we may actually see Roman come back.

  28. Don't know where those RIQUELME-back reports are coming from. He gave an interview to Fox Sports last night and he said he can't work together with MARADONA and that he will be sad watching the WC on TV.

Then he also said Argentina have chances of winning it because we've got the best player in the world (obviously he was not referring to HEINZE).

RIQUELME fans. Here's my message to you: "Forget about Roman playing in South Africa 2010 with Argentina. Not gonna happen".

Important players that might be ignored:

    4) Lucho Gonzalez - The ex-Porto captain who is going to win the french lead will be missed for his skills and leadership

    3) Maxi Rodriguez - Still remember the 3 goals he scored in the last world cup and the goal of the tournament?

    2) Javier Zanetti - Our most capped player who is showing some great form recently, may miss his final chance to get a ticket to the world cup agian.

    1) Juan Roman Riquelme - The free-kick specialist and creative passer will be missed when the inconsistent and unreliable Veron is playing for us.

Players appear to be certainties on our World Cup Squad and I would rather leave out:

    3) Otamendi - I really want Zanetti to be frank.

    2) Jonas - A left leg midfielder playing as a right back is just too much for me.

    1) Henize - I am going to see a lot of stupid giving away or unreachable crosses from the left.

    Pablo AIMAR

And a lot more players I could keep naming.

Those players, like ZANETTI, the one you are crucifying, have won the same number of trophies: ZERO.

And not because of that they were bad players or undeserving of a place in the national team.

I'm not including the younger players and I'm also leaving out those who won at least in the Olympics, though I was tempted to include them here too.

And if it wasn't for the Copa America, players such as SIMEONE and BATISTUTA would have to be included here too (according to your oh very important OPINION. Hey ...what was that about FACTS and OPINIONS?).

You know what you can do with your opinion then...no need for me to tell you.

Let us conceptualise the worst maradona can do with his biased and emotional selections and a huge instinct for selecting either players who perform well only in the matches he cares to remember (like the peru match where palermo scored) or players with connections to places he has a soft spot for (read boca and napoli). So in my opinion the worst maradona can do is leaving out all the below mentioned players. Any player picked from this list would be a bonus for us.

    - Zanetti - somehow eldiego doesnt like him - dont know for what reason. Maybe he is afraid that zanetti would dispossess Mascherano of captaincy
    - Pastore - He will pick that bastard veron who has always failed to deliver the goods and is overrated. the bilardo esutdiantes connection at work here
    - banega - may be because el diego doesnt get up in the in time to see banega play in the la liga. He must be watching messi on highlights
    - Cambiasso- maybe because he missed the penalty in 2006 world cup. el diego wont remember the beautiful goal against serbia or good performances for inter this season
    - Maxi - maxi will be sidelined in preference to the donkey gutierrez who doesnt even have an iota of skill. Maxi is a great team player and scores critical goals and still looked sharp versus chelsea
    - diego milito - palermo would be picked over diego milito due to boca connections and for that stupid promise made after peru match. How can one lucky strike define a player when he has been rubbish all season
    - gabi milito - since messi had made a case for gabi, diego will adversely drop him since he wants to prove that he is decisive and doesnt get swayed by messi suggesting
    - ansaldi - will get dropped for clemente rodriguez due to bilardo's influence and estudiantes background

also lavezzi would be picked for sure due to his napoli connections and el diego would like to pay a tribute to his former club by including him.

I just dread that none of the above players get dropped and their alternatives picked.
