It went down to the wire in Argentina.
Estudiantes de La Plata looked like favourites to win the Torneo Clausura but they failed to beat Rosario Central last week and were surpassed by Argentinos Juniors, which defeated Independiente 4-3 with an impressive and remarkable comeback.
Those results, shifted the weight towards Argentinos' side and they arrived to the last match of the season needing to win (it was a very similar situation than in Spain and Italy).
Argentinos Juniors, the club where Diego Armando MARADONA started his professional career. The club that brought up talents that were key figures for our national team over the years, like Juan Román RIQUELME, Juan Pablo SORÍN, Fernando REDONDO, Fernando CÁCERES, Esteban CAMBIASSO, Diego PLACENTE, Fabricio COLOCCINI, Sergio BATISTA (current U20 Argentina coach and World Cup winner in 1986). The club that recently finished last in a tournament(Clausura 2009), did the unthinkable. They are the new Torneo Clausura champions!
The 8th different team to win a league title in Argentina in the last 8 tournaments. That is...8 different champions (no-one repeating in the process) in the last 8 editions of the Apertura and Clausura.
In reverse order and starting with Argentinos Juniors, the list reads:
Banfield, Velez Sarsfield, Boca Juniors, River Plate, Lanús, San Lorenzo and Estudiantes.
Back to this feat achieved by Argentinos. They had to wait 25 years to win this league title again. When they did it, back in 1985, their current manager, Claudio BORGHI, was the start of the team. Probably the first of the players labelled as THE NEW MARADONA. He was an exquisite player and the best at one particular play called: LA RABONA (don't know the name in English), which consists in hitting the ball with your best foot behind your weaker foot when logic and physics would indicate you had to hit it with the other. Hey...that's too hard to explain. Let's see if I find a link about that move.
Here you go...the master explaining the move (plus...some kids trying it -by the end of the video- with the last one, a blonde and tall number 9 looking a lot like Martín PALERMO and executing the move probably just like him! hahaha!):
And here's one disciple who executes it to perfection in recent times:
Again...back to Argentinos Juniors.
When BORGHI was playing, with Sergio BATISTA also a part of that team, Argentinos Juniors went on to win the Copa Libertadores in 1985 too and they got the right to face the European Champions, Juventus.
I was very young, but I still remember that match. It was probably the best Intercontinental Cup final of those played in Japan. Juventus full of talents like Michel PLATINI, Michael LAUDRUP, Gaetano SCIREA and many others had to really go the extra mile to beat that impressive Argentinos side.
Since I've got another window open with YouTube, I'd let you choose which of the following videos you want to watch to relive that classic game.
On Sunday, they needed to beat Huracán to clinch they title. If they failed and Estudiantes got all three points in Santa Fé against Colón, then the title would have gone to Juan Sebastián VERÓN, Clemente RODRIGUEZ and José SOSA's hands.
Mauro BOSELLI opened the scoring for Estudiantes and soon doubled their lead while Argentinos were still 0-0 at Huracán.
But just before they managed to show the replay of that second goal by BOSELLI, a player called up by MARADONA to the list of 30, Juan MERCIER, scored with a half-header/half-shoulder goal to send Argentinos back on the driver's seat.
Facundo CORIA scored Argentinos' second near the end and Alan SÁNCHEZ of Huracán, put some suspense by cutting the lead to only one goal, even with his team playing with 9 men.
It wasn't to be. Not even the clear 4-1 away win by Estudiantes (3 from BOSELLI and one from Enzo PEREZ, who was one of the 108 players Diego called up) had a saying in deciding the matters. The title and all the glory were going to Argentinos Juniors.
Worthy champions of the Clausura 2010 tournament.
Here are the goals:
Huracán 1-2 Argentinos Juniors
Colón de Santa Fé 1-4 Estudiantes de La Plata.
One thing for the superstitious amongst you lot...
...to add to that 24-year cycle they're talking about, that Oscar-winning year for Argentina and that agonizing qualification to the World Cup against Perú at home, you can now say that last time Argentinos Juniors won the league, it was in the last tournament played in Argentina before the 1986 World Cup.
I still don't believe those things, but I know some of you do. So there you have it.
I just got back in from the Argentinos' match. Great fun and what a passionate bunch of Argentinos fans. Now lets get Borghi on over to Boca.:)
ReplyDeleteGlad you made it, Johnny! My wife's entire family was there. Why? Because half of them support Argentinos and the other half are Huracán fans! There are some River and Chacarita fans in her family too, but the majority are Argentinos and Huracán.
ReplyDeleteOne thing I forgot to write in the post above is that Diego POZO and Ariel GARCE (remember they are both in the list of 30) were also in action today and couldn't do anything to stop Estudiantes from scoring four on them.
On Saturday, Juan Manuel INSAURRALDE (The Argentine MATERAZZI) saw a yellow card in the game his Newell's Old Boys' side lost to San Lorenzo 2-1.
Nicolás OTAMENDI also saw yellow as Velez drew 0-0 in Rosario against Central.
Sebastián BLANCO was on the losing side as Lanús were beaten by Independiente 1-0.
Same as PALERMO who failed to score in a heavy 3-0 defeat Boca suffered at the hands of Banfield.
Seba, Seba Seba! Similar to Italy and Spain?! IN NO WAY! If it was similar to Italy or Spain it would've been River a point ahead of Boca or Independiente on the last day. As this is an Anglophone site I hope you'll allow me a slightly English-oriented comparison: this was as if Nottingham Forest had got promoted back to the Premier League about three years ago and had won it today. It was an incredible afternoon.
ReplyDeleteI was with Johnny (I think both of us are still unsure as to just how legal our... um... 'tickets' really were) because, although we both stick up for the two giants, neither of us could bear to miss the coronation after having been at last Sunday's absolutely amazing match. Last Sunday after that simply unbelievable comeback we were introduced to the club president out on the pitch after the game - today we were smuggled in on club members' cards and spent the first half right behind the goal barely able to see anything! But the atmosphere was amazing and kudos to the large minority of Huracán fans who stayed behind afterwards to applaud the visitors (a spit in the eye to the morons who set fire to part of their own stadium during an argument with the police in the popular opposite!).
We both agree that Argentinos have become our second team in Argentina after the last seven days. That being said, Mercier still shouldn't be even close to the national squad...
I meant it was 'mathematically' like in Italy or Spain. Of course Argentinos are BIGGER than the four teams that were in contention in said leagues! hahaha!
ReplyDeleteI had read your report on HEGS before your comment.
Glad you're enjoying going to these matches.
Are you attending La Promoción? All Boys two matches away from getting back to the Primera División??? That would be like...what? Grimsby Town or Port Vale getting promoted to the Premiership?
And one more thing...I don't know what it is, but I can't just consider the Clausura (19-week tournament) to be as important as any proper 38-week season. I just can't.
ReplyDeleteThe AFA is a complete joke and I'm sick of that lie that says short tournaments are more interesting and they give everyone a shot at the title.
Two teams played for the title in the last round.
Had it been a long tournament?
Here's how they would have finished:
Argentinos 73
Banfield 73
Estudiantes 71
Newell's 69 (lost in the last round, would have been in contention until the very end)
Independiente 68
What a tournament that would have been!
Add to that the fight to get to the Libertadores and the Sudamericana and the fight to avoid the drop and you would have had all but 2 teams fighting for something in this last round.
Those two teams? Racing and River! hahaha! Out of the cups and safe from the drop.
It's silly...I write about the same article/comment every end of the season.
Only the AFA will never listen to things that make sense...
Michael Ballack plays not in SA!!!
ReplyDeleteMichael Ballack plays not in SA!!!
Michael Ballack plays not in SA!!!
yes, now justice is done. don't know what you think about it, but as an argentine fan (and football fan) you have to hate this guy and the german team. and maybe we will face them again in the 1/4, like 2006. i want bloody revenge, i can't overcome 2006 and the 1990 robbery.
Vitalij from Germany
YOU DONT BELEIVE IN THOSE THINGS
ReplyDeleteSTOP SUPORTING ARGENTINA AND STOP RUNNING THIS BLOG THEN
SERIOUSLY IM BEING DEADLY SERIOUIS HERE IF YOU DO NOT BELIEVE IN THE FOOTBALL GODS AND THE SPIRITUALALITY OF THAT BLUE AND WHITE SHIRT
SERIOUS QUESTION WHY YA RUNNING THIS BLOG
I HAVE NO TIME FOR NON BELIEVERS
ITS THE WHOLE DARN POINT OF FANNING ARGENTINA
BELIEF IN SOMETHING REAL SPIRITUAL
AND IM A DARN ENGLISH MAN AND EVEN I KNOW THAT
THERES RED BLOODED ENGLISH GUYS HAVE MORE BELIEF IN THE SPIRIT OF THAT SHIRT THAN SOME ARGENTINIANS
I FIND THAT UTTERLY SHOCKING
IM SURROUNDED BY NON BELIEVERS IM ASHAMED
24 years 24 passes to goal 24 year omens
ReplyDeleteget on your knees and believe HEX ARE FUCKING TEAM WITH UR NON BELIEF OH THANK U VERY MUCH
JUST CURSE US WHY DONT U
FUCKING HELL
Yes Ballack not there is potential good news although i think that he's not as good as he was in 2002. But not having him in the German team could help us if we play them in the quarter finals...
ReplyDeleteWRONG YOUR WRONG ACCORDING TO WEB SITES ARGENTINA JUNIORS WON 1985 NOT 86 25 YEARS AGO
ReplyDeleteBUT THE MANAGER WAS PART OF THE 86 TEAM AND ITS DIEGOS FIRST CLUB SO THERES STILL OMENS HERE AND THEY STILL WON IT LAST TIME BEFORE THE LAST WORLD CUP SO IT KINDA STILL COUNTS LOL
CAPS GUY: Here's the thing. I didn't say Argentinos won the league in 1986. I did say they won it in 1985 and I did say 25 years went by since their last title. What I also said was that they were the last club to win the league in Argentina before the World Cup in 1986. You see...tournaments were long before 1990 and they ran from March till December. 1985-1986 was, in fact, the first time they started running the long tournaments to mirror the European season, their start and their finish dates.
ReplyDeleteSo Argentinos Juniors were effectively the last Nacional tournament winners before the World Cup.
River Plate won the first tournament played in that European-like 1985-1986 season.
Now, to your first point. So...basically you don't like me or this website because we are not superstitious?
Not much I can say. And this is something coming from someone who loves FACTS! I'm speechless.
You don't like it here? You know where the door is. Grab your garlic and beat it (watch out for black cats along the way and don't you dare walking between a ladder and a wall).
By the way...it's 2010. Come back from Medieval-times. It's more fun here!
Is there any of you can give information bout Messi controversy speech after celebrate La Liga Champhionship. He said, "...aguante Argentina motherfucker." His statement arouse debate in Argentina media and twitter. I don't know what his intention by saying that. Is he showing frustration with Argentina local media, national team or what...??
ReplyDelete-charlie-
You guys hear that Ballack is out for Germnay? hahahaha! Bring on ze germans!
ReplyDeleteIf there is a controversy after what MESSI said is because somebody didn't understand the meaning or that phrase.
ReplyDeleteThat motherf**** word is not the right one to use to translate what he said.
He said : "La concha de su madre" which is very offensive if you say: "la concha de TU madre" to somebody.
When you change that "TU" (which means YOU or YOUR) and use "SU" instead, then you're not cursing nobody.
You hit your finger with a hammer? You say: "La concha de su madre".
You score a great goal playing with your friends, you can also say: "La concha de su madre".
See...same as with many insults in English, you can give a curse word two different meanings. One good and one bad.
If you say: "Son of a b****" to someone you just met, he'll probably want to punch you in the face.
If you say to a friend: "I love you, you son of a b*****", then it can be the complete opposite to an insult! A loving expression, even!
So...he did say those words you shouldn't suppose to say at the table with your grandparents or your folks, but he meant no disrespect to nobody.
As a matter of fact, it was his way to express his desire to do well with Argentina in the upcoming World Cup.
Some people are saying this is his way to win over some Argentina fans that still don't embrace him as he is embraced in Barcelona. Or that he staged that just to make that claim and express his love for Argentina.
To me...he is just a 22-year old kid with a huge desire to win something with his country.
Let's hope Messi can exploit his potential at WC. Regarding Ballack, it not bothering me at all, whether he will play or not. For me, if NT want to clinch the trophy, they have to beat all opponent. If argentina can beat germany with their all stars, it would become credit point for Argentina. Without Ballack, Germany still tough team to beat, I think.
ReplyDelete-charlie-
HEY SEBA CAN U PLZ PLZ PLZ TELL ME WHETHER MESSI REALLY HAVE TWITTER ACCOUNT AND IF SO HOW CAN I ADD HIM?? ORIGINAL ACCOUNT!!!!
ReplyDeleteof course germany is still very hard to beat at the wc, ballack is nothing special. i am just happy that this guy doesn't play, though i would like to see his tears once again!
ReplyDeletei know many of you will say that brazil and england are Argentina's biggest enemies, but for me it england and germany! i really hate these two teams, and ballack is poor evil for me!
Vitalij
It was nice to see zanetti getting excluded. After all, he is the "capitano" of interpoli cowards. Hopefully Palermo will edge milito to a world cup place coz he was oh so lucky with his offside goal against Barca and doesn't deserve any more luck. Last but not least, hopefully Demichelis wins a CL medal to leave the CL-hungry lucky cowards empty-handed. Just saw the recap of the semi on tv again and recently old memories of interpoli robbery again stirred my mind. Well just a way to ease some frustration for getting robbed.
ReplyDeleteGo Bayern and go ARGENTINA.
LM10ARG: Dude i'm also a barca fan, but take it easy! We lost! get over it! there's always next year! As an Argentine fan, I would prefer to see Zanetti lift the trophy although his team's tactics in the second leg didn't deserve it as much as Barca, but still they did what they had to do and now they're in the final. I would prefer them to win it than Bayern who only have one Argentine defender who is not even as good as Gaby Milito or his opposite Samuel.
ReplyDeleteLM10ARG-
ReplyDeleteListen young grasshopper, you seriously need to leave this website pronto. You are coming in here and never giving anything positive or constructive to say. You rant on and on about Maradona being this and Maradona being that, you go on and on and on about Barcelona is the greatest and Inter are a bunch of cowards that. You were the one pushing for Diego Milito to make the team over Gonzalo Higuain. The only reason you wanted that was because he played for Real Madrid. Now that Inter Milan and Diego Milito have broken that black heart of yours, you say you want Milito out, and happy to see Pupi miss the cut. I do not understand your analogy because whatever you say does not make much sense. Be gone, because you are becoming a throne in everybody's side.
P.S. Now I hope Inter win the title so you can shut your mouth and face and can go cry like the little kid that you are.
These are the 7 players that will miss the cut, 2PM Baires time on Wend will be official. I have no complains with the cut.

BRO-DADPHUCKING ARGENTINES LIKE U DON'T EVEN KNOW HOW TO VALUE THE BEST PLAYER IN THE WORLD AND MAKE HIM HAPPY. INSTEAD U GO FOR QUANTITY RATHER THAN QUALITY, MESSI ALONE IS BILLION TIMES MORE IMPORTANT THAN THOSE 4 INTERPOLI PLAYERS. IF BRO-DAD PHUCKING F4GOTS LIKE U IN ARGENTINA REALIZED THAT, THEY WOULD NOT HAVE WRITTEN MESSI'S NAME LIKE ME$$I ON THE WALLS. INSTEAD THEY WOULD HAVE CHEERED FOR BARCA TO MAKE ARGENTINA'S BEST PLAYER HAPPY AND HOPE THAT HE WINS IT ALL.
ReplyDeleteAS I SAID BRO-DAD FFUUCCCKKER, FIRST LEARN TO CURSE LIKE A MAN, NOT A SHEMALE.
TOLD U BRO-DAD FUCKA, U DON EVEN KNOW HOW TO CURSE. U CAN CALL MY MOM PROSTITUTE OR BLA BLA BLA. EVEN THEN, U R CALLING ME AN OFFSPRING OF HUMAN WHILE U AR AN OFFSPRING OF DOGS AND PIGS SINCE THEY GANGFUCKED UR MOM, NOT MEN.

I BET U GOT A HEAD LIKE PIG AND A TAIL LIKE A DOG. BRO-DAD PHUCKER I WILL SEE WHAT HAPPENS IF BAYERN RAPES THE HELL OUT OF UR ORGY PARTNERS AKA INTERPOLI PLAYERS. IF THAT HAPPENS, IT WILL BE NICE EVEN IF A DIE COZ I WOULD LOVE TO DIE SEEING A BEAUTIFUL TEAM WIN A TROPHY RATHER THAN A TEAM WHICH IS CONSISTED OF COKSUCKING COWARD PLAYERS AND SUPPORTERS LIKE U. I CAN SEE U WANNA KILL ME, U R MOST WELCOME IF U CAN. I HAVE NO PROBLEM DYING. HOWEVER IT WILL BE GREAT IF U LIVE AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE TO EAT CUM. U LOVE CUM OH TOO MUCH SO U DON'T WANNA DIE.
ReplyDeleteI M A MAN SO I GOT NO FEAR OF DYING. BUT U CAN'T EVEN DIE COZ IF U DO, U GOT EVERYTHING TO LOSE ESPECIALLY EATING CUM.
THAT'S THE DIFFERNCE BETWEEN A MAN LIKE ME AND A SHEMALE LIKE U.
ANYWAYS, BRO-DADPHUCKER...I WILL ALSO BE OUT FOR A LONG TIME SO I WON'T BE ABLE TO REPLY TO UR JIZZY COMMENTS. IN THE MEANTIME, I AM SURE U WILL HAVE NO PROBLEM SPENDING UR TEAM HAVING FAG ORGIES AND SWALLOW LOADS OF CUM.
