Lionel MESSI - A Chest Of Brilliance
First it was Spain, then it was Europe and now the World. Sounds familiar, right? That’s just about almost summed it up for Lionel MESSI in 2009.
Barcelona can finally now claim the only title that was missing from their trophy cabinet after defeating Estudiantes of Argentina 2-1 in the FIFA Club World Cup at the Sheikh Zayed Stadium in Abu Dhabi. In the process, they ensure European dominance in the competition for the third straight year.
Barca started the game brightly but fail to capitalize on the chances they created. Despite of their dominance it was the Rat Stabbers that took a surprise lead in the 37th minute with a power header from Mauro BOSELLI.
MESSI came close to equalize in the 41st minute with an in swinging free kick but was well saved by Damian ALBIL to ensure that his side going into half time with the lead.
In the second half, it was all Barca as they kept pushing forward but were unable to break down a determined Estudiantes defense. MESSI forced ALBIL into another save in the 70th minute after dribbling past four players.
Just as when it did looked like the trophy was heading back to South America after a two years lapse, the Blaugrana finally had their breakthrough. With just a minute left, Gerard PIQUE flicked the ball to substitute PEDRO to head in the equalizer forcing the game into extra time.
When the match restarted, it was the same script again. Then just like in Rome almost six months ago, MESSI rose to the occasion to score Barca’s winner with just 10 minutes left to play. Instead of using his head, he chested the ball in after a brilliant cross from Dani ALVES.
There’ more. FIFA also named him as the winner for the adidas Golden Ball and Toyota Award for being the best player in the tournament. Juan Sebastian VERON came in second.
As for Estudiantes, they can still go out with their heads held high for putting such a remarkable display. Kudos to their fans for making their presence felt.
But certainly 2009, belongs to no one else but Lionel MESSI.
YES and ffuucckk u higuain who
ReplyDeletesaid he hopes Barca doesn't win. Why
the hell higuain is in Argentina team?
We have so many better players like
Milito, Licha, Zarate. I will pick Milito
over higuain any day...screw u
higuain!!! And Barca have already won another
"treble" this season: Spanish Supercup,
UEFA Supercup and Club World
Cup!!!
First and foremost congrats to Lio and Barca.
ReplyDeleteLMARG 10- What are you talking about? Who cares what Higuain said about Barcelona. They are rivals, what do you want him to say? And FYI, why not root for the Argentine side over a side from Spain? And Higuain just scored the goal of the season in La Liga. You have LITTLE room to talk pibe.
Jack!
Still I think Diego Milito is far better than higuain. Milito scored regularly for minnows like zaragoza and genoa. He still scores freely for Inter in Italy and we all know how defensive italy is comparing to La Liga. It's real madrid which makes higuain looks so good...
ReplyDeleteOh is that so? when Higuain had 20+ goals last season for Madrid it was a fluke. When Real Madrid bought all those players people said he wont be as good because he will not be getting those minutes. Which one is it? Because he seems to be the best player in Real Madrid right now.
ReplyDeleteAnd are you a Messi supporter or Barca? Or do you only support Barca because of Lio?
Higuain had to say something like that because Real Madrid and Barca are rivals. Imagine if he said, I wish them the best and hope they can win it. Think how the locker room would be for Real Madrid.
Milito is a fine goal scorer, but face the facts, he will not get the playing time for Argentina.
And putting a Argentino player on blast for what he said in a club game, that is in SPAIN. Where is your nationalistic pride in all of this? The team is a unit, and putting a player on blast is JUST FOOLISH. He never said anything about the national team. I just do not get your analogy in this.
In the end of the day we hope that some of these players can do what they do for their clubs and they do it for the national side.
Jack!

To Jack, I am a Barca supporter coz of MESSI and I know he will always stay in Barca unless something really terrible happens. MESSI will always be more important to Argentina than higuain. It is a fact!!!
ReplyDeleteSo you are a Barca fan because of Messi, so if Messi ends up Inter Milan then you will become a Inter Milan fan.
ReplyDeleteAnd what does Messi being more important then Higuain have to do with this? You went on a rant blasting Higuain. So is Barcelona more important to you then a player who will likely start for Argentina for the next 10 years or so? Is that what you are saying?
Remember something about this game, you support the shirt not just the name on the back of it.
Jack!
Of course I support the shirt. If I didn't support the albicelestes, my nick would be LM10FCB, not LM10ARG. All I am trying to say is that higuain didn't show true sportsmanship by saying that he didn't want Barca to win Club WC. So at least for today, all Barca fans should mock higuain.
ReplyDeleteIf Higuain had said "I hope Barca wins the Club WC" i would have branded him a poofter. Football is a competitive sport. Higuain is a competetive fella, who's loyal to Real Madrid (at the moment). It has nothing to do with Argentina national squad. Probably he was even hoping Messi would win the cup. But, being a Real Madrid player he can't be heard saying that, can he?
ReplyDeleteI think some of us need to grow some brains...
His team-mate marcelo said he doesn't care whether Barca wins Club WC or not. That would have been a more professional comment from pipita rather than hating on directly. Everyone is mocking him on Goal.com so it doesn't look good since he is an albiceleste player.
ReplyDeletei agree with JACK
ReplyDeletei am happy for MESSI but way too sad for estudiantes coz they represented argentina and MESSI is not bigger than argentina just like RIQUELME (who quitted our beloved team)... i wanted estudiantes to win but at the same time i also wanted MESSI to look good in their loss. i love MESSI because he puts the famous blue & white shirt, if he had selected spain instead of argentina then he wouldnt have been what he is to most arg fans at the moment.
HIGUAIN is a competitor and plays for barca's greatest rival ... what he said is only related to barca/madrid and has nothing to do with argentina (MESSI is not argentina) simple as that.
SEBA & co you guys are doing a great job keep it up, i love the contents of your website
Mightie
theres no way LM10ARG is an argentinian fan,he just obsesses with messi.(your atitude is discaraisful)
ReplyDeletepipita is an argentine and a real madrid player,of corse he wants his countrys club beat barca,i was very sad to see estudiantes lost today because iam an argentine suporter not an individual player who plays for a foregin club.
dont get me wrong i was happy for messi, but not for barca because they beat an argentine club who had 11 arg players.
I am an argentina fan and I was supporting Leo and Barca because we all wanted them to make history, becoming hte first team to win six trophies in one year.
ReplyDeleteI was at the game live and it was an unbeliveable feeling when Messi scored the second goal.thnaks you Messi for a geat great moment. He is super popular in the Middle East and has a huge fan base.Thousands of people came to see him and he didn't dissapoint despite being injured.
thank god here are some argentinians fans who have brains as well as heart of argentina. i m really sad n like previously dont get me wrong bt i m really angry with messi. i know messi was doing his job bt why why why?? why he scored?? if he hadnt scored nothing was going to change for him!!! man like i said earlier that i wished messi got injured on that match , bt now i realized that was bit harse bt ya i really wished if he helped our club to win rather then that spanish club. bt i wanna say smthibg to everyobe. COUNTRY COMES FIRST THEN CLUB AND SECONDLY ARGENTINA COMES COMES 1ST THEN ANYONE. messi maradona all r jst part of argentina they dont represent whole argentina!!! VAMOS ARGENTINA!!!!!!!!!
ReplyDeleteFirstly I’m sorry that I had to delete some of the comments on this post as we at Mundo do not encourage anyone to post comments with foul language. Whatever that is that you would like to share please do keep them constructive and clean.
ReplyDeleteNow I’m really surprise to see some of the reaction here.
LM10ARG, you have your point about HIGUAIN. But I’m sure he referring that mostly to the Barca-Real rivalry rather than anything that has to do with the National Team. Had it been the other way around, there is a possibility we could have expect a statement like that from MESSI as well. I’m sure it doesn’t take a genius to understand that.
Now may I ask everyone here one simple question? Is it wrong for me, as a fan of Argentina to support MESSI in the final against Estudiantes? And let me repeat that clearly, it is MESSI not Barca.
After all, wasn’t that all the while we all just wanted to see an Albiceleste player being successful regardless where he plays and whatever he does.
So even if Estudiantes won the match, I would have been equally happy for the result because in the end, all we want is for Argentina to be successful, right? For the record, I think Estudiantes should be proud of what they have achieved from this tournament.
So if MESSI success is NOT something that we as fan of Argentina should all be proud of, then who should be? Barca fans? Spanish fans?
If that’s the answer then my next question is going to be something like “why the hell do you guys cheered for him on the same night in Rome, six month ago?”
To ARGENTIAN 777, please be reminded that MESSI is a professional player who plays for Barca and all he was doing was his job. The fact that he scored for me shows that the young man has integrity and sincerity in what he is doing. That is something we should all admire of him.
I’m sure any even Carlos TEVEZ or Pablo AIMAR would have done the same thing if they had to play against Boca or River. Remember when TEVEZ scored for Man City against the West Ham, even the Hammers faithful were equally happy for him because they understand that he was just doing his job.
And yes, I do know that Country comes first and then club. Thank you!
i want LUCAS BARRIOS at the WC! 11 goals in the last 12 games for borussia dortmund, and always important goals, like 1:0 yesterday.
ReplyDeleteVitalij from germany
Estudiantes did a good job; I expected them to win, but whatever. There's lots of people here talking trash about Messi, but I assume it's part of the cheap nationalism football promotes ("promotes" is not the best word, you will understand), and the late Argentinian NT fiasco just makes it worse. Sad, really sad.
ReplyDeleteBut congratulations to Barcelona and Estudiantes.
Hating Messi has become a popular pastime in Argentina. A huge shame but true.
ReplyDeleteJOHN this one for u. i m really amazed how can u support messi on that day when our beloved club was playing against messi????? ya everyone have their own right n i dont want to interfear on that bt we all are argentina's fan damm n why u all r nt understanding this?? ok wht if messi make moves to real madrid sm day then u will b supporting real madrid against our argentinian club???? WOW!!! if estudiantes had won that match it would have done lots of good to argentinian soccer!!!! n john u mentioned u were happy for messi coz he achieved smthing out of that match bt messi is only one person bt if our club had won that match all 11 players would have been achieving smthing!!! n messi have already achieved many things bt look at our clubs, european treats our clubs like 3rd class team!!! N AT LAST REMEMBER ONE THING BARCA WILL THROW OUT MESSI LIKE RONALDINHO ONE DAY. at that time all will realize that club world cup trophy will b there with barca n messi will b empty handed bt at least if estudiantes had won that match atleast that trophy would have been there in argentina. AT LAST I DONT CARE ANYTHING. I JUST LOVE ARGENTINA N WILL ALWAYS B SUPPORTING ARGENTINA N ARGENTINIAN'S CLUB. VAMOS ARGENTINA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
ReplyDeletei still wanna say smthing to john. i jst want to ask him one question. WHO DO U LOVE MORE ITS MESSI OR WHOLE ARGENTINIAN SOCCER???????? i m waiting for ur answer. thank you
ReplyDeleteWell ARGENTIAN 777, in case if you didn’t get what I mentioned from my earlier comment then let me repeat here.
ReplyDeleteI would have been equally happy if Estudiantes had won the match just as much as I’m happy for MESSI because IN MY HUMBLE OPINION both represent Argentina. One being a club and the other being a player. I hope I make myself clear to you on this.
I know for a fact that if Estudiantes had won that day they would have become the first club from Argentina to win the Club World Cup trophy and surely all of us here would be extremely happy. In the end that wasn’t meant to be.
I don’t think it is fair for you to be upset just because some of us here were supporting MESSI whilst he played against an club from Argentina. Like what you’ve just said, everyone has their own right.
That doesn’t mean that our support for Argentina is divided because for good, bad or worse we will still be cheering for our players, club and National Team. After all, this blog is dedicated about everything that is Argentina.
Regardless whether is it MESSI (or any Argentine players for that matter) playing for Barca, Real, Inter, Boca, River, Pohang Steelers, Auckland City…….we would still be following them and hope they’re all successful.
About the fact you’re saying that European clubs treat clubs from Argentina (or anywhere else in the World) like 3rd class team. Well that’s is different argument altogether.
Honestly, I do appreciate your support for Argentina and I hope you do drop by here often as we do appreciate comments coming from a passionate supporter like you.
Lastly about your question?
Yes I do love Argentinian football. But isn’t MESSI part of Argentine football. Therefore again, I am happy for him on what he has achieved as well. Period.
I thought everyone was passed this Messi hatred thing? Guess not.
ReplyDeleteLook, I've been a Barcelona supporter for a long time now(before Messi and even before Ronaldinho showed up), it's my team. And in the final yesterday, a small part of me wanted Estudiantes to win, because it would bring some positivity to Argentinian futbol. With that in mind, when Messi scored the game winner in Extra Time, I just exploded. Not just because Barcelona had taken the lead, but because our "golden boy"(so to speak) showed alot of heart(in a match that was almost lost) and scored yet another important goal in his career.
You know sometimes I wonder if it was Maradona in Messi's position at the moment if people would be on his case all the time. I think it's the current trend going around where people have to hate on Messi because he never played in Argentina.
ARGENTIAN 777, whether you like it or not, Messi is our star heading into the World Cup. It's not Aguero, it's not Higuain, it's Messi. And it's important that he(and the rest of our players) head into the World Cup in a solid state of mind and in a positive state of mind. Don't get me wrong, I'm an Argentina supporter first. I've always believed that no player is bigger than the shirt, I've been a fan of Argentina long before Messi and will be a fan of Argentina after Messi, but if keeping our star player happy means we have a better shot at the World Cup, then so be it.
Hi Roy,
ReplyDeleteYes, unfortunately the Messi haters in Argentina remain in full bloom. You can see them hoping he will fail at every opportunity. It's a curious phenomenon that I could share my impressions about after living here for four years, but to what end. Suffice to say that his never having played here has something to do with it, but there is alot more to it than just that. My guess is that unless he scores at least one goal a match for the NT there won't be much letup from the local Messi bashers. They want to dislike him.
To annymous who said Barca beat an Argentine club with 11 Argies: Well that's true but how many of them play for the national team except veron. And to be honest it is a shame that veron is in NT in the absence of Riquelme. And u said i m not an Argentina fan. Man I have been Argentina fan since I sarted watching football and way before MESSI started playing for Barca.
ReplyDeleteSeriously seeing some comments here I am like WTF. I was 51% for Barca not that I support their shirt but I wanted Leo to win. That has always been my case concerning clubs. It's always where Argentine players are and mostly as we all have one or two favourite player even in the national team; it then becomes where my favourite player is. That's why my friends who have a lifelong support on a club think it's weird that I keep changing my club support.
ReplyDeleteNow regarding yesterday's match. Seriously to the people who expected Messi not to score or play good because it was an Argentine club; GET A LIFE, SERIOUSLY. I love Argentine national team not because of cheap political type of nationalist zeal and stupidity but because of the example of the beautiful game they play; their footballing philosophy. That's why even if they play against my country (not going to happen anytime soon); I will support them over my country. Think me stupid but that's what it is for me. It's about the way the game is meant to be played not some cheap xenophobic national pride and such crap.
And that explains people hating Messi. Unless their hatred reaches to a level where Messi can't play for the team, it is pointless to give a ear to their bullshit.
There is a saying in my country which sums up this stupidity perfectly; the dog keeps barking while the elephant keeps walking. So let the dogs bark....:)
If you were going to delete messages, then why not delete LM10ARG first message Higuain? That is foul language.
ReplyDeleteAnybody see the pictures of the Estudiantes fans painting on the walls in Baires, calling Messi a puto, and writing his name as Me$$i? I personally do not think it's right. But for some people club teams are more important then the national team.
ReplyDeletep2bn,
ReplyDeletei think some of your words will hurt many people here, even if it wasn't what you wanted.
how can you say it is stupid to be a fan of the argentine national team because of "some cheap xenophobic national pride", like you called it.
i am not an argentine, but i believe 99% of argentines support the argentine national team because of patriotic reasons, and that is the normallest thing. not cheap, not xenophobic and not stupid.
do you think germans or italians support their national teams not because of national pride? maybe you can support a club from another country because of its football style and beauty, but when it comes to national teams, you support the team that represents your country. ok that`s not my case, cause i support argentina but i'm not from argentina, but most people always support their own national teams, no matter if it plays beautyful, good, bad, ugly.
Vitalij from germany
Poor Messi! Argentine superstar who shines in Europe but bashed in his own country.
ReplyDeleteAll of u Messi hatres, why can you think from professional side. Barca deserve to win. I love Estudiantes, I love NT. But be fair, Barcelona deserve to win. And Messi (from Argentina) is a matchwinner!! His maturity and progress would be an advantage for NT in South Africa.
this is very sad to read the messi bashing and the argument of club v country.
ReplyDeletethis is my take im argentine and always want the nt to win end of story but as for club games i would never want a fellow club who i dont support (who ever they are)to win a trophy as i dont support them. ie if im a boca supporter why would i want est to win???if they had won its not for argentina it would be for their fans and they would (understanably) be gloting about being the best club in the world and that has nothing to do with "this is for argentina" etc as it is not its for estud fc only.
if you are a neutral then pick who you want to win...easy.
do you think real.m. supporters support barca or vice versa or liver supporters manu utd etc etc when they play in europe....no they dont they always hope their revals lose even in a final-end of story.
when real last played in the champs lge final 93% of barca fans wanted them to lose.
South American players in European teams take the WC Cup more seriously than Europeans. They really want to win it. Brazilians, Arg, they all do.
ReplyDeleteMessi was very South American in the way he played against Estudiantes. He was almost too hungry for the game (which is why he had problems at times).
It's rank idiocy for Argentines to hate a player like Messi (of this is true). It just smells like jealousy. Don't they get it? He wanted to beat Estudiantes so badly becuase the team was Argentine. That was the most Arg reaction he could have possibly had.
I dont get all the hate on Messi. Well i'm both a barca and arg nt supporter, but it seems as if arg does not understand the pride leo has in playing for barca. I'm sure if he could have stayed in newell's, he would. But circumstances showed otherwise and it was only right for him to go to barca. It is in barca where he was given his treatment, taught barca's philosophy in football. It was where he rose up the ranks to be where he is now.
ReplyDeleteAnd its undeniable that he equally yearns to play for arg nt, as seen in how desperate he wanted to play in the olympics. It is really sad to see how he is not given the same credit in his home country, but i guess its mostly due to how he hasnt played in the local league yet. But time and time again he has said he wants to retire there.
I am not an argentine, but hell i am proud of the passion in this football, the glory of the blue and white shirt. Im sure if you guys has the ability to go beyond all the bias the media or the people has created, you will grow to like leo as a player.
Moreover i do not feel there will be any difference in argentine football itself. If everyone is sure of the current situation we know its all down to the political and economical situation, for eg how maradona is used as a pawn and will not be replaced. Frankly, club wc is not significant enough in europe tbh.
thank u john and roy for ur comments. 1st of all i want to make it clear that i love messi n i cant even think of hating messi.he's picture is every where in my house from kitchen to bathroom, bikes , cars n most importantly he's always there in my heart!!!! ya u guys got ur own opinion n i do respect ur comment john bt look i cant help myself. in truth i m barca fan too bt this is only bcoz of messi!! if messi leaves barca then its over for me too coz i m never intrested in club matches coz i want to give one example: suppose one player is currently playing for liverpool n when he scores from liverpool he will b kissing liverpool shirt n celebrating bt when transfer seasons arrives n if that player make move to man u then when he scores for man u then he will b now kissing man u shirt n celebrating n this process goes on n on n on so i cant take it. u might think i m crazy bt i wanna say thats nt football. everyone needs passion for the game. thank god at least we cant change our country time n again. n moreover i m still with estudiantes coz that was an argentinian club n look i m nt from argentina bt is it necessary to be argentinian to support argentina?? no i guess!!! i love my argentina , i love messi, higuain n all argentinian players. i dont care whether real madrid win or barca all i want is goal from higuain n messi. i want to c argentina winning world cup, copa america, confederation cup, olympic gold medals,u-20,u-17 all n infact every match that argentina plays. n yes i want to say that we all must b altogether. we all love argentina afterall. ya we divided in club matches bt we should be together in my opinion. ya bt i m still sad that estudiantes lost bt ya hope argentina can win their all upcoming matches. n yes i hope u guys will deleste that 1st comment frm LM10ARG coz that idiot wrote bad atb higuain. at last i want to say all guys keep supporting argentina. NO MATTER WHT I WILL ALWAYS B SUPPORTING ARGENTINA,ARGENTINIAN CLUBS N AT LAST ARGENTIAN PALYERS WHOLE OVER THE WORLD!!! VAMOS ARGENTINA!!!!!!!!!!
ReplyDeleteARGENTINIAN777 ... very well said!!!
ReplyDeleteits simple most of the time we support clubs coz of the players. In 1990's i was a die heart fiorentina supportor coz of BATISTUTA but now i dont even care how do their kit looks.
i dont think anyone here hates MESSI, infact, people are happy for him. a great history has been made by barcelona and MESSI played a big big part in it. remember not RONALDIHNO, CRUYFF, RIVALDO, De BOER bros, LAUDRUP but MESSI the argentine.
the first argentine ballon d'or and no doubt fifa player of the year .. thank you MESSI
this is very sad ... "Estudiantes fans painting on the walls in Baires, calling Messi a puto, and writing his name as Me$$i" .... who knows what is goin in their minds
Why is everyone here supporting Estudiantes and upset that Messi scored another Winning goal?
ReplyDeleteYea Ok i'll admit it, Estudiantes has 11 argentine players compared to 1 from barca. But if you think about it, how many of them will be playing for Argentina in wc2010? Estudiantes has Veron who has never impressed me since he came back to Argentina in Copa America 2007. As for the other Estudiantes players, As long as they don't have a chance to play for the National team, I don't really care about them.
Messi is our only hope for winning the world cup. That's why most of us albiceleste fans even support Barca.
As for the world club cup, There was no doubt that I wanted Messi to win another trophy to complete the perfect year which will only be bettered if he wins the world cup next year.
well i see that you do not have faith in club football but i can tell you its different in barca. Most players are home grown and have lots of pride in the blaugrana shirt, for eg, puyol, xavi, iniesta. The list goes on and obviously includes messi. So i'm sure they will not throw messi out or wdv bs.
ReplyDeleteAnd again we should not confuse club football and international football, because it is not fair. But seriously if we continue to have this mentality i do not see how we can win wc.
Is messi playing against catalunya? I've read some news in barcelona that he will be rested, so just confirm over here.
ReplyDeleteVitalji,
ReplyDeleteI sure didn't wanted to hurt anyone's feelings. I didn't tried to generalise the whole population as xenophobic for supporting their national team. I know that it comes from our nature as humans to support what you perceive as your group. Until it reaches a level where it directly hurts other people, I am fine with that. I am talking about a group of people for whom it reaches a level of madness that leads to actually physical violence against other groups. That is the group I am talking about.
I understand what you mean by Germans supporting Germany and so on. I do not want to go to a deep level to understand why this happens :). But my comment was pointed to a group of people who hate Messi and such group has mostly nothing to do with football but it is an outlet for them to show their hatred in a perfectly legal way. And I personally despise those people.
Anyway, If someone got offended I am sorry.
p2bn i jst want to say smthing abt u. i m really impressed when u said u will b supporting argentina evn if ur country was playing against argis. same here coz our madness for argentina have increased such a way!! anyways i m really happy to see such supporters here for Argentina!!!!! VAMOS ARGENTINA!!!!!!!!!!!!
