Arguably the biggest match of the week, Gonzalo HGUAIN and Real Madrid continue their remarkable run against city rival Atlético in their first El Derbi Madrileño of the season. The match lived up to it’s expectation with plenty of action from which Real almost squandered a comfortable lead to win 3-2.
Also remarkable was the current form of HIGUAIN since he was reinstated into Real’s starting line up. He scored in the 64th minute to put the Los Merengues 3-0 up, his fourth goal in three La Liga appearance. Capitalizing on a defensive error from Luis PEREA, Pipita charged into Atlético’s penalty area before coolly slotting past Sergio ASENJO.
Shortly after that goal, Los Colchoneros were given a life line when Real were down to 10 men following the dismissal of Sergio RAMOS. Atlético took advantage of the situation with near comeback. In the 78th minute, Diego FORLAN pull one back and just two minutes later Kun AGUERO brought even closer after firing a low shot past Iker CASILLAS. Deep into injury time Kun had a great chance to leveled the match but this time he was denied by CASILLAS.
Alongside Pipita and Kun, the match also saw three other Albiceleste players in action; Maxi RODRIGUEZ (Atlético), Ezequiel GARAY and Fernando GAGO (both Real Madrid).
Earlier before the match, Barcelona ensured their position at the top of the league with 4-2 win over Real Mallorca, with Lionel MESSI scoring from the spot three minutes from time.
Also cementing their place at the top but in another league was Newcastle United after defeating Peterborough 3-0 in the Coca Cola Championship. Jonas GUTIERREZ scored their first goal to give the Toon Army supporters something to cheer about during these troubled times at the club.
In the German Bundesliga, Diego KLIMOWICZ scored for Vfl Bochum in their 1-3 defeat to SC Freiburg. Eulogio ZARATE scored twice for Grasshopper in their 7-0 trashing against Bellinzona in the Swiss Super League.
