CACERES shot in the head, fighting for his life

Former Argentine international Fernando CACERES was shot in the head in the early hours of Sunday in the outskirts of Buenos Aires. He is in a comma at the moment I'm writing this.

He underwent emergency surgery and the doctors decided to leave the bullet in as it was too risky to remove it.

CACERES was driving his car when he was intercepted in Ciudadela by four men in a stolen car (for those who don't know, it's an area very close to Carlos TEVEZ's home town of Fuerte Apache). The criminals, supposedly with the intention to steal CACERES' car too, eventually shot the former footballer and hit him in the right eye.

CACERES played for Argentina in the Copa América 1993 when the Albicelestes won it in Ecuador (the last major trophy won by Argentina) and he started and played in all four of our national team's matches in the 1994 USA World Cup.

He came up the ranks at Argentinos Juniors and played for River Plate, Zaragoza, Boca Juniors, Valencia, Celta de Vigo, Córdoba and Independiente, where up until a few months ago was working as the reserves head coach.

On behalf of all of Mundo Albiceleste's readers and friends, we wish Fernando all the best in this terrible moment.

I remember him playing for the National Team is USA'94. I believe he started in all matches.

  5. Terrible news. So sad to hear this. I remember him as a very good defender. He partnered Ruggeri at the bach when Vasquez picked up an injury before the world cup in 94.
Our prayers are with him in this sad moment.

  8. Really sucks. A great defender, 99.9% of our players can learn alot from him. The guy gave it his all for the shirt.
