U17 World Cup - Group Round-Up

Just to kind of update from John's post earlier, "little" Argentina defeated Honduras in their oppening match of the U17 FIFA World Cup 1-0.

However there's more good news. The other 2 teams in the group, the European champions Germany and the host Nigeria played to a 3-3 Draw which means that Argentina now tops Group A with 3 points, ahead of both Germany and Nigeria who each have 1 point. Also in the Nigeria/Germany match, German defender Robert LABUS got himself red carded which means he will miss Germany's next match which is versus Argentina on Tuesday, October 27.

Here's what Argentina coach Jose BROWN had to say following the match.

"We weren't at all surprised by how well our opponents played. The first thing we emphasise when preparing for any match is to respect the opposition, whoever they may be. It was a very difficult match, firstly because of how well Honduras played, and secondly because of the weather. I know from experience that the first match in a World Cup is always the most difficult, and we managed to win. I'm delighted with the result, but I'm already thinking about the work we have to do to be well prepared for the next two games."

Be sure to check back for more news coming from this tournament.

No way! The germans got a player red carded in their first game? They're always so fair-play! [/sarcasm]

I want to believe that the 3-3 result had a lot to do with the horrible condition of the field. It reminded me the last U-20 Argentina-Brasil, were we lost more because of the field and the referee than anything else.

    A swimming pool, literally.
