ReplyDeleteYes, there was a defender, but the keeper was higher up field than PALERMO.
You need two players from the opposing team to be between you and the goal. There was only one Peruvian defender between PALERMO and the goal.
What happens is that sometimes you take for granted that the GK will be standing on the line or will be the closest to the goal-line than anybody else.
So, normally, you need only one defender or field player because you have the GK behind the defender. It wasn't the case here.
Clear offside. No doubt about it.

Offside or not, I'll take it. We've been screwed more than once by referee's in the past, it's good to get some calls our way.

The rule states that there needs to be 2 players in front (or on the line) of the other player. Obviously you never see the goalkeeper and you usually dont count him because hes always on the back. In this case he ran up. So there needs to be 2 players (that are not gk) for it not to be offside. Only 1 was keeping him on but there wasnt a second. So he was offside.
Think of it like this. Theres 11 players on the field for the other team. The GK counts as a player. When a player is offside its because the player in the other team was ahead of the last Defender AND NOT THE GK. The GK counts as a player for offside rule, you just dont see him.
If you dont get it. Then give up on soccer.
