AYALA willing to come back...

According to an article on TyC(Argentine sports media), former Albiceleste captain Roberto AYALA said he's willing to do "anything in his power to help the team" and that the door is not closed(for him to return to the National Team).

This is interesting, because at the beginning of 2009, news surfaced that Diego wanted to call-up El Raton but AYALA refused. Now this does not necessarily mean that AYALA is back on the team. We would need Diego to call him up, but with everything going on right now, it's more than a possibility.

Personally, I'd welcome AYALA back. I know he's up there age wise and that there are younger players that are able to do the job, but if Diego doesn't call those players, I'd be happy with AYALA. He brings heart, experience and leadership and he's been playing great for Zaragoza lately(even going back to last season).

  2. would welcome him back in a hear beat. his last appearance in the copa america final was not memorable, but Ayala easily is the best defender to come from Argentina since Pasarella.

  5. It would be great to see him back. But I doubt Diego will call him in this situation.

  6. A 36-year-old Ayala is not the answer. He could be part of the puzzle, but he is far from the Ayala of old. I don't think he is a great defender anymore. but Argentina have very little in that position. Argentina are in dire straits, but I honestly think that argentina will get through. Not on merit but on other teams like Ecuador and Uruguay beating each other up. There is a scenario where they will automatically qualify for the WC with a win against Peru.

This is ridiculous. Please. As much as I love the great Roberto Ayala, he belongs to the past. Don't fall in that trap only because Diego is calling 36-years old players all over the place. Basile has already humiliated Ayala. Enough.

  8. I love Ayala and he would make for a good substitute but why use him when you can use Samuel and Demichelis in the middle. Having Milito in the back again would help us out.

Zanetti - Samuel - Demichelis (Milito) - Zabaleta

Why is Zabaleta rarely mentioned for call ups? I think he is the man we need on the left side.

  9. Mad About and MaxiLopez, I know the answer isn't AYALA. If it were up to me, AYALA would not get called-up, GARAY, FAZIO, SAMUEL, GONZALO RODRIGUEZ, MONZON, INSUA and ZABALETA would. But if Diego doesn't plan on calling them up and insists on PAPA, DOMINGUEZ and the rest, than I would prefer AYALA over them.

GK, I have no clue why ZABALETA isn't mentioned. To be fair though, he hasn't been getting that many minutes for Manchester City this season(from what I've been able to tell). I do think he should be one for the future, but Diego has overlooked him(he got called-up a few times by BASILE though).

  12. did you see Samuel's performance against barca? absolute class...still no signs of calling him back. he was ignored by Bielsa and now maradona.
one is too old to even have a brain to think, and the other is stupid by birth.

Pep to coach Argentina, haha yeah right that will ever happen.

A group made up of presidents of football clubs from Argentina's Primera Division, are heading a campaign to have Barcelona coach Pep Guardiola installed as Argentina coach in place of under fire Diego Maradona, according to reports in the Spanish press.

The "Project Guardiola 2010" see the Barca chief as the ideal man to lead the Albicelestes, as he has the know-how to get the best out of Lionel Messi.

"Argentina has a diamond in the rough, it is Messi, and none of the national experts have been able to get the best out of him. In contrast with Guardiola at Barcelona, Messi won three tournaments in a year," Marca quotes the group as saying.

They say that the only other coach to get Messi firing for Argentina was Sergio Batista, who lead the Olympic team to gold in Beijing in 2008, but they say he does not have the quality for the national side.

"Some people don't want a foreign coach, but national coaches have failed to exploit Messi's ability, except [Sergio] Batista but he is not qualified to lead the national side," said another unnamed club president.

There is a suggestion that the Argentine Football Association will offer the job to Guardiola after the World Cup in South Africa, and one of the groups seeking the Blaugrana coach says Spain winning the World Cup would be the ideal scenario.

"Argentina are virtually out of the World Cup so we need to pray that Spain win it, so they don't go looking for Guardiola as coach."

  17. That must be spoof

Anyway, Walter Samuel is only 31, playing like Baresi and cannot be overlooked for Ayala ignoring Diego's craziness.

He is ex Boca and is keeping Ivan Cordoba out of the team. He needs to be playing for the Albiceleste alongside a younger defender he can groom (like Otamendi, Gonzalo, Garay or Fazio)

That article about Pep is on Si.com. Quite a reliable site but I doubt he will take the job.

  19. Roy:
I agree 100%. If Diego continues to call the mediocre defenders that are playing in Argentina, I would take Ayala over them any day. Of course he's not the answer, he belongs to the past, but maybe he could help us qualify at least.

  21. Marca is becoming more and more a horrible newspaper.

It is horrendously written, not to mention that the name of that paper should really be Real Marcadrid or something like that.

That report about GUARDIOLA being proposed as Argentina manager is one of the most stupid things I have ever read in a mainstream media.

They don't give a single name of a club President that would be a part of that group they mention.

    It's complete and utter rubbish.

SI.com could be a very reliable source, but by picking that report up (they signed with a name and a goal.com mention) they got it completely wrong.

There is no truth whatsoever to that outrageous article by Marca.

  22. Marca is not a newspaper but rather a Real Madrid PR tool. They just run stories to try to destabilize Barcelona, such as the Pep is leaving story.
