PALERMO confirmed, the list goes up to 26 players

Increasing on early reports, MARADONA has confirmed his desire of working regularly with a group of players from the domestic league.

He'll have them for training sessions at Ezeiza and will use them to face a South American opponent (most likely Paraguay) in a friendly match to be played in Santa Fé, Argentina, on 20 May.

Martín PALERMO is the most notorious inclusion in a list that includes players from Argentinos Juniors, Arsenal de Sarandí, Boca Juniors, Colón de Santa Fé, Estudiantes de La Plata, Gimnasia y Esgrima La Plata, Huracán, Independiente, Lanús, Newell's Old Boys, Racing Club, Rosario Central, San Lorenzo de Almagro and Velez Sarsfield.

MARADONA added that he wants to have enough players to make up two different teams. He also added: "There are no River Plate players on the list. I want to have this friendly on 20 May, but it will all depend on how far will Boca Juniors and Estudiantes advance in the Copa Libertadores".

Furthermore, MARADONA hinted that it is possible that he will use two different teams for the upcoming World Cup Qualifying matches against Colombia at home and Ecuador away.

"It's a possibility. My players will be tired after the first game and some will have some problems. We'll look into the possibility of having two different teams."

According to TyC Sports, here's the full list of 26 players named by MARADONA on Thursday:

Goalkeepers:
Mariano ANDUJAR (Estudiantes de La Plata)
Cristian CAMPESTRINI (Arsenal -Sarandí-)
Diego POZO (Colón)

José SAND (Lanús)

Newspaper Olé, on the other hand, has some differences with TyC Sports and they published the list contains 25 names instead of 26.

They have Boca Juniors defender Ezequiel MUÑOZ on their list, but they don't have Fabián RINAUDO (of Gimnasia y Esgrima La Plata) and Juan MERCIER (Argentinos Juniors).

Some comments and general information about the names you probably don't know will come soon here on Mundo Albiceleste.

We will probably be able to update and confirm the entire list at some point during Friday.

Stay tuned...and discuss the names you know and what do you think about Diego's comments and ideas.

  4. I can't see where this is a bad idea for Argentina. Some clubs may not like it but they will adjust. If nothing else, it will keep Diego busy and out of trouble.:)It will also give him more of an opportunity to see more players. As for Palermo, a bit long in the tooth, but he is the classic man in the middle. If you want, arguably, the best header in the world on your squad, now you have him.

  5. Spot on, Johnny. And essentially, clubs have to be happy anyway. It's not like Diego will take their players away for a long time or use them when they have important club matches.

Clubs should look at this as a way of raising the value of their players and be in a position to earn more money when they sell them with a tag of "National Team Player" on them.

You can say bringing PALERMO is a way for Diego to make Boca fans proud and reconcile with him after the RIQUELME controversy.

You can also argue that PALERMO is a proven goal-scoring machine, but he didn't last long in the competitive European leagues and he is back in the national team on virtue of being a Boca icon (which is not an easy thing to achieve, but it's not the same as scoring 20+ goals a season in any European league against the best defenders in the world).

The advantages of playing for Boca are really impossible to deny once again.

I will be absolutely devastated if PALERMO makes it to the next World Cup. ABSOLUTELY DEVASTATED.

  6. Seba-I don't think you will be devastated. I just can't see Palermo being part of the NT come WC time. And you know, Palermo and Roman are not close, so Diego's inclusion of Palermo can also be seen as a little slap at Roman, i.e. hey Roman, Palermo is on the team and you are not.

  7. Seba is right about PALERMO. He didn't made it big in Europe as compared to his time in Argentina. However he still has that predator instinct in the penalty box and that is something positive about him.

  8. Palermo does Not play for Boca. Boca plays for Palermo, that's why he is so successful. I don't see him in the National Team at all. What other N 9 can we get? No more Batigols around??

Lets find Maradona's home and protest that for the next WCQ he calls Pipita!. Yes I know this is just a home based squad but if one player deserves a call up it is Pipita. He calls Denis over him, I wonder if it has to do with him playing with Napoli hmmmmmmmm. Seba can you comment on if Maradona has even talked about Pipita?

    Jack!

  10. I'm still trying to wrap my head around the inclusion of Palermo. If he really wants to go with this "local base players" thing, why not use Palacio? Diego's biassism(is that even a word?!) has been showing since day one. When he called up Lavezzi and Denis from Napoli, refusing to call-up any River Plate players and now Palermo of all people.

Quick question to anyone who might be able to answer this(I'm looking at you Seba and John), why wasn't/isn't D'Alessandro called up? Brazil isn't exactly far from Argentina so the distance cannot be a problem.

One good thing about this is that Diego is thinking of doing what I've been wanting him to do for a while... use 2 sets of teams for the Qualifiers, alas Pekermna. Let's just hope he gets it right.

...PALERMO?! Sorry, I still can't wrap my head around it.

Palacio is not what probably he's looking for. He wants the 9 poacher type of striker, Palacio isnt thatat all. There are 3 of them in his convocation, Palermo, Sand and Caraglio.

About D'Alessandro, i'm wondering if Diego wants an system with an enganche? Also, about i'm cautious about Andres. He isnt nicknamed el cabezon for nothing. Especially, his antecendents with Messi or Gago and especially Aimar, his behaviour could disrupt the already tense environment around the NT.

  13. Let me address a few points you've raised here.

The lack of River Plate players on this list:

Well...in my opinion, River doesn't have any worthy player right now. Honestly. I'm with Diego in this one. Who would you call? A 100kg FABBIANI? A 33kg-out-of-form BUONANOTTE? A 43-years-old (just exaggerating here) Marcelo GALLARDO? Not a single one of River Plate players are up to a good enough standard in my opinion.

PALACIO? Not a definite striker. More of a second-forward. I agree with anonymous when he says Diego must have been looking for a poacher. A big target man. Also...agree that PALERMO, SAND and CARAGLIO (very exciting project) are in that category.

D'ALESSANDRO? Yes, Brazil is quite near, but in order for him to come to training to Ezeiza it'd take a plane trip from Porto Alegre every Tuesday and then back to Brazil on Wednesday? Not doable. Not at all.

Pipita? Diego has spoken about him and he says he's looking at every Argentine player in the world. He actually praised him in an interview. I guess sooner or later he'll call him up.

  14. In addition, Palacio is like a piece of porcelain. He can't keep from being injured. He is handled with kid gloves at Boca and still is troubled some at times with a groin problem that dates back nearly a year. I like D'Alessandro as well. Too bad he's not playing in Argentina. If he kept his act together I think he would be a valuable addition, local squad or not. There's a guy who can make things happen.

Sebastian> do you have the itw where he's praising Higuain?

    ReplyDelete
  16. Roy, you've read my mind about Andres as I did mentioned his name in our previous post on Palermo to make a comeback with Argentina. Genuinely, he is the best candidate to play in that engache role for us. Maybe the whole travel things make sense but I hope he is just not off the radar.

Yeah we all know he is kind a big headed player but I believe thoise were the days before Diego is our national team coach. The whole Roman issue, in my opinion, has the send the message loud and clear to everyone that egoist will be entertain in the dressing room.

By the way, there seems to be a lot praise from everyone on SAND, the players that I'm, keen to look forward to see him action.

    ReplyDelete
  17. Seba, I suppose you're right about River Plate. I know you said that Diego wants a big target man and Palacio is not one, but I still think it would of been good to call him up. Even if it's just as a substitute. Poacher or not, the thought of seeing Palermo put on that shirt... not good.

D'Alessandro you raise a good point. It still is a plane ride, however I would like to see him called up for Qualifiers which is why I still think he should of been called up now. Start getting some chemistry(if any) together because I really think we can use him. John is right, if there is one person who can shut D'Alessandro up and take care of his ego, it's Diego.

Salvio looks like a good prospect(I only saw him in the U20 South American tournament and he was one of our best if not best players throughout the tournament). Zuculini(next Mascherano?) will probably be a back-up for Battaglia but I guess its just for experience. Forlin is another one I'm excited about.

  19. Unlike everyone who doesn't like the idea of Palermo in the team , i have to disagree somewhat , because Palermo is actually a good big striker whom although not for the long term deserves his spot in this kind of match , if you want to compare Palermo to any other player , it has to be Cruz , and we all know that they are consistent scorers as years pass by.
The only player who was not included is Buonanotte , although he is not in form , but he's still a top talent.
As for D'Alessandro i really like this player , but unfortunately he's not a regular goal scorer or leader to the team and he didn't succeed in Europe but i still like this player since the Copa America 2004 and Olimpics 2004 , However not as a starter in WCQ but can be a good back up to Messi

i was reading that Atletico madrid might be making an offer for D'allesandro in the summer. would be good news for both atletico and argentina if they do get him. Hopefully, though he needs to try and keep a cool head.
