Roland Garros - Could This Be Our Year?

The Roland Garros, tennis second Grand Slam of the year will begin this Sunday. It is pretty turning much turning into the same story every year between NADAL & FEDERER. But lets not forget what happen at the Australian Open beginning of the year? Furthermore, the French Open has always turned out to be a boogey ground for some of the world top players.

As always being played on clay, this could represent Argentina's best ever chance of achieving a Grand Slam title. Something that has eluded us since Gaston GAUDIO triumph at the same place, four years ago. So now, what about our chances to win it again this year?

So what do have from the first round action's? Of course there has to be certain David NALBANDIAN who is seeded at No.6, who lead the Albiceleste troop. His match up will be against, of all things another player from Argentina, Carlos BERLOCQ.

Then not to forget our other hopeful, Juan MONACO (No.13 seed) who will take on Sweden's Robin SODERLING. Another tough match up will be between Agustin CALERRI and American Mardy FISH. While No.298 sees, Guillermo CANAS will take on another American Wayne ODESNIK.

Other interesting first round clashes will see the return of Guillermo CORIA (2004 runner up) taking on Spaniard Tommy ROBREDO.

Here are all the other first action on the Men's Singles, involving the Albiceleste Army: -

Diego JUNQUEIRA vs. Adrian MANNARINO (FRA)
Juan Martin DEL POTRO vs. Josselin QUANNA (FRA)
Sergio ROITMAN vs. Guillermo Garcia-LOPEZ (ESP)
Sebastian DECOUD vs. Oliver ROCHUS (BEL)
Jose ACASUSO vs. Dominik HRBATY (SLK)
Maximo GONZALEZ vs. Roko KARANUSIC (CRO)
Juan Ignacio CHELA vs. John ISNER (USA)
Martin Vassallo ARGUELLO vs. Feliciano LOPEZ (ESP)

  1. What a way for our players at the French open!!! If there was one bad moment than I guess Carlos BERLOCQ will fill that spot when he took on David NALBANDIAN. As expected our biggest hope did not see much obstacle seeing fellow countrymen 6-2, 6-4 & 6-1.

Juan Martin DEL POTRO and Jose ACASUSO also won their respective tie in straight sets. DEL POTRO had to play against the home crowd as he defeated Frenchmen Josselin QUANNA 6-3, 6-2 & 6-3. While ACASUSO had no trouble against Dominik HRBATY of Slovakia, winning 6-4, 6-2 & 6-4.

Sebastian DECOUD manages to overcome Belgian’s Oliver ROCHUS in a five set thriller 3-6, 6-4, 6-3, 6-7 & 6-1. Also wining in five sets was Maximo GONZALEZ, who defeated Roko KARANUSIC 6-3, 7-5, 4-6, 3-6 & 6-2.

The surprise of the day came from unseeded Eduardo SCHWANK who surprise 16th seeded Carlos MOYA from Spain. Eduardo was already on a roll having taken the first two sets 7-6, 6-2. But the Spaniard manages to pull back to draw level after winning the following two sets (7-6, 6-4). In the end it was Eduardo who prevails winning the last set 6-3. This has to be biggest upset so far.

For everyone’s information, just two weeks ago Eduardo has managed to escape unharmed when his hotel in Bordeaux was struck by fire

    Hi, John

I'm feel or my opinion athletes from Argentina is the best in many sport. I know on Football(I like Maradona) & Basketball. In tennis I like Coria. I cannot remember that he can won Roland Garros or not. But last 5 years He nearly King of Clay.

For this year 80% same final because Fed and Nadal don't drop in pre season of Clay. But Clay court everything can happen. Cheer

  3. Hi John! Thanks for reading and commenting on my blog - it's nice to know I'm not just sending it out into a void!

If an Argentinian is going to win Roland Garros, I think it might have to be Nalbandian - but to be honest, I wouldn't put any money on it. Nalbandian is in Nadal's quarter, and while Nadal has never beaten Nalbandian, Roland Garros is Rafa's playground. I think we're set for another Roger/Rafa final (unless something very unexpected happens.) I'm a Rafa fan, but a bigger Roger fan, so I'll be cheering for the mighty Fed!

On the other hand, Argentina is my pick for the Davis Cup this year. They are so strong as a team and they have a very favourable draw, with their semi at home and, should they get through, the final at home as well. While Nalbandian is, in my opinion, the only really brilliant player among the Argentinians, they are so deep and so strong overall I think they can take out anyone. Russia, Spain and the US are all strong teams as well, but as far as Davis Cup goes, I think this might be Argentina's year.

I'll keep an eye on your blog - and hopefully you'll keep reading mine!

  4. Hi Jodi!!! Thanks for your comment. Please do drop by more often. Your knowledge on tennis will be highly appreciated.

I do hope this year's Davis Cup could be our year. We will playing against Russia on home court, so that is a huge advantage. I do feel we are more than capable in getting our revenge against the Russian, after losing the 2006 final.

I have to agree with you that David NALBANDIAN is our best ever hope. I would relish to see him playing against NADAL.

It is never going to be easy against Rafa. But let's not forget those heroic moments from David during the end of last year against FEDEX.

So I'll just keep my fingers cross on this.

Of course it is obvious that the most likely final will be NADAL/FEDERER, but you should know well what happen in the Australian Open this year.

Seems like tennis is getting unpredictable once again.

Overall, let's hope for an exciting tournament this year.
