Cool Argentina begin Qualy on fire

After watching Argentina defeat Chile and Venezuela (both 2-0 results), the first thing I have to highlight is how cool and in control our team looked.

Both matches could have been played to the end of the first half and save the other 45 minutes, such was the difference between the Albiceleste and "La Roja" and "La Vinotinto".

It was evident in Buenos Aires. After Roman fired Argentina into a comfortable 2-0 lead with two precious free-kicks, COCO's boys started to pass the ball around and keep it cool. Avoiding injuries and keeping their legs fresh for Tuesday's match at Maracaibo.

And when Tuesday came, it was like watching the same movie all over again. Roman scored against Chile in the 26th and 45th minutes and he didn't score tonight, but those were just about the only differences, as Gabriel MILITO opened the scoring in the 16th and Lionel MESSI doubled our lead in the 43rd.

But if the first halves were similar, the second halves were identical!

Complete ball control by Argentina and our rivals took it easy as they tried to avoid a big heavy defeat. After all, it's not a crime to lose 2-0 against Argentina. Have Chile or Venezuela played a little bit more offensive or taking more risks, the difference could have been a lot bigger.

The Barça Boys gave us our second win in a row and these two results give COCO a little bit of peace of mind so he can work on preparing our next match (against Bolivia in November).

There are a lot of things to talk about but I'll concentrate in just one: it hurts me, but I don't think MESSI and TEVEZ are working well together and I doubt they'll ever will.

I've seen some lovely passes from MESSI tonight (and some tries on Saturday) but I'm not seeing Carlitos passing the ball to Lionel (the exception being our second goal against Venezuela).

Lio tried to feed Germán DENIS (congratulations on making his debut for the Albiceleste) and waited for TEVEZ before sending a pass in front of goal (Carlitos was anticipated by a Venezuelan defender). In both situations, MESSI could have tried to shoot and could have probably scored, but he decided to pass the ball. I think that's a very healthy thing to see.

Carlitos seems to be in a constant need to prove his condition of striker. He's desperate to score and the more he gets desperate, the more chances he misses. That's something COCO should pay attention to and should work on that problem to solve it now.

We will need to play 90 minutes full-speed in the near future and we need to be at our best in front of goal.

What's your view?

  1. I agree Seba. Carlitos is pressing and not playing to his potential. There is no lack of options for Coco. He can go Denis, Aguero, Saviola or bring back Crespo. If he does not go for height with Crespo, I actually think Saviola would work very well with Messi. Saviola does not press, and in my opinion is smart with the ball near the area and takes his time. I don't think he gets enough credit for what he brings to the table.I thought G. Milito had his best game tonight, and not just because he scored. He was effective defensively as well. What can you say about Messi ? He could have scored at least one more goal. All in all, another encouraging performance.

  2. Spot on Seba, our offensive needs some polishing in order for it to be more effective.

To me personally, TEVEZ and MESSI are more or less types of forwards but not out and out striker. COCO should have had a go with KUN instead of TEVEZ.

I’m keen to see more of German DENIS in action in the future. And what about Ezequiel LAVEZZI?

Just to highlight some important issue, it’s a pity that we are loosing our potential striker force for unwanted reasons.

Fernando CAVENAGHI had all the potential to done the No.9 jersey and look what happens. And lately Mauro ZARATE surprise move to Qatar. Not to forget Maxi LOPEZ.

Messi-TEVEZ combo will not work. I thought it would I really thought it would in copa america vs brasil. I told myself, if they stop tevez, messi will be there, and if they stop messi, tevez will be there. Or hell, they cant stop roman, messi, tevez all at once. I got a reality slap across the face. This is going to be Messi team for the next decade, unless some other gem comes to life cough Icardi(Father says he is a Batigol) or Bruna, depends if they will play for Argentina and not those snakes Spain. Yeah I remb how they tried to steal Messi away, but he laughed and said thanks but no thanks. Ok since i got that off my chest I will continue. I only saw the first game and missed out on this one however; i am pleased. The first tough game argentina wil face will be COL when they play away. If Argentina wins that game, that will mean they start a perfect 4-4 depends if they beat BOL@ home(which they will, diff story if the game was in La Paz). Like i said this will be Messi's team for a long time, and Tevez and whoever Aguero(#1 fan) will need to watch from the sidelines. Arg need to find a partnership with Messi just as he does in Barca.

A little info on Mauro Icardi, 14 year old who plays in the Canary Islands. He arrived to play in 2002.His JR club is called Vecinadario, he has scored over 400 goals. Father calls him a new Batistuta, Real Madrid and Barca are killing each other for him, Barca call him a new Messi. Messi&Batigol, way diff players but I will take anyone. But one step at a time, lets see how this prodigy does, he might be a Batigol or he can be a Maxi Lopez(YIKES!)....

Too all the ppl that dislike Riquelme, 3 out of the 4 goals were set plays and he was involved in them. So any debate now?

I think I finally figured JRR out. Goes back to what I said before, given time and space he is a magician. However he is easy to defend, slow and doesn't possess the mental stamina to compete with the big boys.

Now on to the qualifications, these are games we are supposed to win so I am not terribly impressed. Only one goal was with the run of play. The others off set pieces. Are we going to score those set pieces against Brazil and the europeans?? I hope so but our record says different.

Roy said its time to forget the 10 and try a different offensive philosophy. I agree. I think the time of the 10 is over. We are so quick to label the next Maradona but none of them will ever reach his greatness. Our future lies not in the offence be conducted by one player but by all players.

Until we can change, I think we are destined for diappointment.

    Oh and fire Passerella please!!

  11. There's more than disappointment to the underperformance of Tevez. For one, our midfielders aren't hitting him correctly. He's short, so you gotta hit him low and close, that's done for Messi but not quite so for Tevez.

Tevez's position also doesn't help. He's on our concentrated side when attacking (usually), which means not much space to work with. On top of that, we don't have a target in the middle of the box for him to hit, making sending balls to him difficult AND unproductive.

We need alot of adjustments to fit in the Tevez element correctly. Besides fullback, I think we should start with Cambiasso...

  12. Watching the enemy-virtuoso performance from Brazil last night. If you didn't see the match, Brazil broke it open in the second period, and went on to win 5-0 over Ecuador. Kaka again phenomenal, Dinho seemed to be in good form and Robinho with a move on the end line to get open and set up Elano that will be a YouTube staple for a long time. There continues to be no lack of firepower and finishing ability for Brazil. Darn.

  13. Johnny, I saw the match and you're right. BUT, the defensive mistakes done by Ecuador was ridiculous. The last goal could of been saved by a 5 year old. Basically Kaka shot it(going around 4km/h give or take a km), its coming towards the goalkeeper goalkeeper has it in his hans... And it SLIPS and goes behind him. Kaka couldn't even believe it(just watch his reaction after the goal). With that said, credit goes where credit is due. Brazil kept attack and never looked like conceding.
