Argentina-Peru: Match Coverage

All the pressure on Argentina now.

Uruguay, Brazil and Mexico scored 16 total goals in their quarter-final matches and are now waiting for the last semifinalist.

Peru without Jefferson FARFAN will play with a 3-5-2 formation and I imagine that two of those five midfielders will help A LOT in defense.

With Diego MILITO in for CRESPO, Argentina will look to continue with their winning form and keep their dream of winning their first major title since 1993 (Copa America Ecuador).

We'll follow the match here and through the comments' box.

VAMOS ARGENTINA!

2nd minute - ACASIETE fouls Diego MILITO near the box and earns the first yellow card. RIQUELME takes the free-kick and sends the ball over the bar.
-------------
3rd minute - HEINZE with a shocker! He steps on the ball. It goes backwards and GUERRERO accepts the present, takes the shot well over the bar.
------------
14th minute - RIQUELME running (yeah! running!) on the left, takes a shot from a tight angle and the keeper saves.
------------
17th minute - MESSI with a Maradonesque slalom, shots, ACASIETE deflects and the ball goes over the keeper only to hit the post.
------------
19th minute - MESSI looking closer and closer to score. Tries with the right and VILLAMARÍN saves with his chest (when the keeper was beaten).
------------
20th minute - ROMAN sends the ball to the box and AYALA goes very close from heading it. PIZARRO, an expert in the other side of the field, shows his talent in his own box and saves Peru in a very complicated situation.
------------
35th minute - Argentina not attacking like 15 minutes ago. AYALA has a yellow for a foul on GUERRERO and risked the second one.

Half-time whistle

Argentina looked to be more dangerous, but only for a very short period of the game. The defense looks far from being secure and the midfield is very slow at times. The ball is not getting very clean to our front men.

Best player so far: ZANETTI and MESSI, with Pulga being a little bit ahead of Pupi in the man of the match race.

Second half underway.

TEVEZ in for Diego MILITO.

46th minute - TEVEZ combines well with RIQUELME, a fortunate rebound and ROMAN is faced with only the keeper to beat. AND HE DOES! Superb shot with his left. Argentina 1-0 Peru.
--------------
51st minute - ZANETTI runs upfield for 40 metres before he sends a cross for TEVEZ. Carlitos with great effort heads it and sends it straight to the bar. Sooooo close!
--------------
61st minute - ROMAN with one of those passes we will remember forever. MESSI comes in at full speed and finishes between the keeper legs. Sensational goal. First Copa America goal for MESSI. Argentina 2-0 Peru.
--------------
74th minute - Lovely one-two between TEVEZ and MESSI on the left. Then TEVEZ gets inside the box and sends a lovely pass for MESSI. He shots, BUTRON saves but the ball felt to MASCHERANO and Javier scores his second consecutive goal and celebrates by sucking his thumb! We're loving it, baby! Argentina 3-0 Peru.
--------------
85th minute - PATO is complicated by a high ball but manages to clear after getting outside the box. TEVEZ is at the other side of that delivery and sends a great unselfish pass to ROMAN, who cooly finishes to make it Argentina 4-0 Peru.
Is RIQUELME's fourth goal in the competition (second tonight).

FULL TIME WHISTLE is blown.

Argentina advance to the semifinal where we will face Mexico.

A great performance in the second half. Match report and players' rating will come soon to Mundo Albiceleste!

Thanks for the company throughout the game and hope those that are just waking up in their part of their world will enjoy this match thread and all the comments.

  2. Hard foul on Diego MILITO. Here comes RIQUELME to take a free-kick from 25 yards (or there abouts! ha!)

  5. look at the tractor go

    ReplyDelete
  6. Rio...how do you analyze the formations so far? Tactics and all that.

I see a Peru side pressuring really upfield. Which I think it's good for us because if we can break that first line, then more spaces will be available for us to explode.

    ReplyDelete
  7. Nice shot by Pizarro !

    ReplyDelete
  8. score coming up guys

    ReplyDelete
  9. fuck, i so saw that coming. didnt work out

What are my chances of being right?

Oh for fuck sake ref! That was a clear foul on Diego MILITO!

    ReplyDelete
  11. Cambiasso and Pupi playing well.

    ReplyDelete
  12. peru playing 3-5-2, like mexican. with stagged midfield so 1 CAM

    ReplyDelete
  13. Yeah Seba, they do look like pollos feos !

    ReplyDelete
  14. i should say mexico usually... mexico today changed into a 3-4-3 or 4-4-2 wing back staying up

    ReplyDelete
  15. OMG FUCKING HIT THE POST

    ReplyDelete
  16. Ouch ! Great effort by Pulga !

    ReplyDelete
  17. MESSI. Please live forever!

    ReplyDelete
  18. Only a matter of time. I do admire Peru for actually PLAYING.

    ReplyDelete
  19. come on! we need a goal so we can force their wingbacks to push, then we can play wings and kill them.

    ReplyDelete
  20. My stream isn't working so I'm relying on you guys to tell me what's going on.

    Ah, frustrating.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Linda-it's an avalanche of Argentina offense now, but no goals !

    ReplyDelete
  22. Another near miss !

    ReplyDelete
  23. Linda, you've got four options in that website I posted earlier:

    http://livefooty.doctor-serv.com/

    Try try...keep trying!

    ReplyDelete
  24. Has Zanetti ever played better ?!

    ReplyDelete
  25. Nice idea by Cambiasso, a little tall with the pass for Milito.

    ReplyDelete
  26. if manU end up selling heinze, AF dropped glasses big time

    ReplyDelete
  27. Ask the Inter fans!

Or try and get a video of Argentina v England in France 98.

    PUPI scored that night!

    ReplyDelete
  28. I get the impression Veron is having a tough time figuring out his role. Ah, for Maxi !

    ReplyDelete
  29. peru isn't coming out. totally chicken shit

    ReplyDelete
  30. Anonymous4:17 pm

what channel is it on livesoccer?

    ReplyDelete
  31. Right, they have dropped back. Well, you can't blame them !

    ReplyDelete
  32. that's what they're doing. trying to lure peru out so we can get through their defense. that's alot of ppl on defense if they only sent 3 attackers out on their possessions.

    ReplyDelete
  33. messi just said puto on camera

    ReplyDelete
  34. AYALA risking a red card now. If I was COCO I replace him by half-time.

    Anonymous: try this website: http://livefooty.doctor-serv.com/

    ReplyDelete
  35. you ever listen to carlito and mascher on interviews? those guys curse every sentence lol. it'd be odd if messi doesn't get some positive reinforcement from them through this tourney.

    ReplyDelete
  36. cant replace ayala, he's the defensive leader

    ReplyDelete
  37. fuck! mascher hurt

    ReplyDelete
  38. You can't replace him, but it's better to have him in the semifinals, isn't it?

    Now MASCHE injured...oh no!

  40. Oh no ! Well, at least he's walking !

    ReplyDelete
  41. We have to SCORE NOW!

Before the end of first half.

    ReplyDelete
  42. in mascher we trust!

    ReplyDelete
  43. Right ! Not good that Peru weathered that onslaught.

    ReplyDelete
  44. let's get a goal b4 the half time
    mudo.

    ReplyDelete
  45. Veron looks like the last man chosen in a pick up basketball game. Get animated !

    ReplyDelete
  46. Well, I kind of have a working stream now, except it keeps stalling and has no sound.

I really hope Masche is okay. Gago is nowhere near ready to take his place.

    ReplyDelete
  47. the slowness of milito just cost us another goal

    ReplyDelete
  48. I think we are playing the worst 20 minutes of our Copa America (from the 20th minute).

Still...it doesn't seem that it'll take TOO much to do something to score.

    ReplyDelete
  49. I'll say it now: I DON'T LIKE HEINZE AT ALL!

    There...I said it.

    ReplyDelete
  50. Ha Ha ! The beast returns !

    ReplyDelete
  51. Sadly, I have to agree with Seba that we're not playing all that well.

The lack of urgency displayed by our players is getting to be a bit worrying.

That said, at least the defence is dealing well.

    ReplyDelete
  52. Aimar for Veron and/or Tevez for Milito. Pupi is playing HIS position AND Veron's !

    ReplyDelete
  53. Anonymous4:37 pm

So far my friends predictions seem to be coming true, he told me that they will be playing for a 0-0 draw and go for PK's. I am waiting for Tevez to come in, I have a gut feeling that he will score in this game. Lets pick up the game!!!!!!

    ,Jack

    ReplyDelete
  54. QUE ENTRE AIMAR!!

    AIMAR!!!

AIMAR Y TEVEZ por Messi y Cambiasso o Veron.

    AIIIMMMAAARRRRR cARAJO

    ReplyDelete
  55. the way veron is playing... drop messi to right outside and put tevez on imo.

    ReplyDelete
  56. 2 dribblers to get the ball into box for milito is better than having a passer that's not doing crap.

if messi gets too tired in second half then put aimar on as a closer. right now, let's get a goal ffs.

    ReplyDelete
  57. Good thought Rio.

    ReplyDelete
  58. Linda..this time I disagree (about defense).

I don't think we are doing well. AYALA could have been very well sent off and HEINZE is a nightmare (for us).

We are only not conceeding because Peru is not attacking.

That's the way I see it.

    ReplyDelete
  59. the other scenario is peru getting a redcard and then it'll open up. cuz they're not going to come out of their turtle shell themselves.

    ReplyDelete
  60. I think we dealt well with Peru's high balls, but you're right, I'm very worried about Ayala. It's not like he can be substituted.

    ReplyDelete
  61. I don't think we played that poorly outside of Veron. If we had scored on one or two of those chances, we would not be moaning so much now. BUT, we didn't, so the complexion of the game changes.

    ReplyDelete
  62. defense is ok. they have to push up to provide rear support for the offense. heinze cleared out 2 dangerous peruvian counters. he's at least doing better than milito, who's fucking doing nothing! there are 3 attackers, we should of let zanetti run lose and just ayala milito + heinze to deal with them. mascher should stay home to give zanetti complete offensive freedom.

    ReplyDelete
  63. tevez coming on

    ReplyDelete
  64. TEVEZ coming in!

    Replacing Diego MILITO?

    ReplyDelete
  65. and veron out haha

    ReplyDelete
  66. Confirmed. TEVEZ in for Diego MILITO.

    ReplyDelete
  67. aimar for veron coming up then, bah. why take out the target person.

    ReplyDelete
  68. ROMANAZOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

    ReplyDelete
  69. no matter, peru dead

    ReplyDelete
  70. Left footed magic !

    ReplyDelete
  71. that's the shit roman does in boca. at a SS position strike from distance

    ReplyDelete
  72. and was tevez's setup

    ReplyDelete
  73. now watch peru wingers push, and we infiltrate their corners.

    ReplyDelete
  74. What a great goal!

Now is not the time to sit back and defend. I trust COCO won't let them do that and will ask them to keep going for it.

That's what we need to do.

Now Peru in attack and a dubious offside flag is up when a Peruvian was facing ABBONDANZIERI face to face.

    ReplyDelete
  75. i just love how the old tractor makes these runs

    ReplyDelete
  76. THE TRACTOR IS UNSTOPPABLE!

TEVEZ hits the bar with a header!

    ReplyDelete
  77. Palo ! No luck for Messi !

    ReplyDelete
  78. no seba. now is time to put another in and seal it. no pressure, we can do it easily.

    ReplyDelete
  79. Oh Roman. Perfect time to score, and now we can play a settled game while looking for the next goal.

    ReplyDelete
  80. Is it raining a little ?

    ReplyDelete
  81. it's such a good feeling after having your heart hang up for 45 minutes and then boom, it drops :D

    ReplyDelete
  82. GUERRERO injured. GARCIA replaces him.

    Bad news for Peru.

    ReplyDelete
  83. Nope Johnny...is not raining here in Rio! hahaha!

Seriously? It is raining since the start of the game!

    But very slightly...

    ReplyDelete
  84. see? heinze got his shit togather man. milito is the one that's doing nothing all the time

    ReplyDelete
  85. lol, that was cheap

    ReplyDelete
  86. I wonder what ROBINHO can do to that defense of ours....

MILITO tries to clear and hits HEINZE with the ball...then Peru almost scored...

    ReplyDelete
  87. that time peru send 7 players

    ReplyDelete
  88. SCIENTIFIC GOAL!

    ReplyDelete
  89. Roman to Messi GOAL !

    ReplyDelete
  90. OH MY GOD!

    FOOTBALL-ORGASMO!!!

    ReplyDelete
  91. roman came from another world!

    ReplyDelete
  92. 4-3-3, 2 wingbacks

    ReplyDelete
  93. Hey, I,ve been watching that all year !

    ReplyDelete
  94. You see? HEINZE has trouble with the fundamentals. The basic.

How can I trust a player like that?

    ReplyDelete
  95. put on palacio rest messi?

    ReplyDelete
  96. Sorry...it was the other Gabriel (MILITO)

    ReplyDelete
  97. Johnny: me too! Although the Barca 4-3-3 is a bit of a weird one (meaning that there's only about 2 players defending at any one time).

Messi's finally got his goal. See what our offense can do when they actually wake up? :D

    ReplyDelete
  98. And Rio, I think Messi will come off in a bit, because he does need rest and Basile knows that. Palacio? Probably, and I was a lot more impressed with him against Paraguay than most of you guys were.

    ReplyDelete
  99. he cleared the ball out never the less :D as long as he gets the job done man, doesnt have to be pretty.

heinze is probably not on the bright side of IQ/EQ scales. he's never really dead on at positioning. but he defend the box well. we need ppl like that, so he's in.

    ReplyDelete
  100. GAGO in for VERON

    ReplyDelete
  101. this is the formation we'll play against brazil.

    ReplyDelete
  102. key is to test the offensive capability of this setup

    ReplyDelete
  103. Defensive substitution? Come on, Coco, you're better than that. Veron probably did need to come off, though.

As for Heinze, I think the problem is: if not him, who are you going to play that's obviously better? If we could clone Zanetti our problem would be solved, but that's not an option right now.

    ReplyDelete
  104. I like him better as a CB. But he doesn't think before he goes for a diving tackle and all of a sudden WHATTTTTTTTTTT!

    MASCHE AGAIN?????

    ReplyDelete
  105. Mascheradona strikes again !

    ReplyDelete
  106. the way tevez and messi piled on the left was driven by riquelme's move to the center. planned play right there.

    ReplyDelete
  107. this is virtually the same strike as the one they did against paraguay, just faster. the 2 dm are neutral in 4-2-3-1, surprise elements.

    ReplyDelete
  108. Heinze is an unorthodox player but I like him because he is a mean little fuck.

    ReplyDelete
  109. pay attention to the formation they playing. this thing is one of our primary formations, but not used very often.

    ReplyDelete
  110. Now the match is taylor-made for MESSI's lightning runs...

But I wouldn't mind him being replaced to avoid any unnecesary contact with the River Pla...sorry...the Peru defenders.

    ReplyDelete
  111. Hey...is it "tailor-made" or "taylor-made"?

Back to "the book is on the table" level!

    ReplyDelete
  112. Rio: so what do you think of using Tevez as the point man in 4-2-3-1? And is Messi suited to the outside midfielder position? (He does defend, but he's not that great at it.)

    ReplyDelete
  113. Cambiasso is going to need a good masseuse.

    ReplyDelete
  114. AIMAR in for CAMBIASSO

    ReplyDelete
  115. Tailor made unless it is tailored by a guy named Taylor.:)

    ReplyDelete
  116. All the "troublemakers" playing together!

That's the way we like it, COCO!

    ReplyDelete
  117. Johnny...you're killing me! hahahaha!

    ReplyDelete
  118. 4-2-3-1 is definitely one of the more advanced formations right now. it's so much more reliable defensively, and the wing space utilization is great. france killed brazil with it in the world cup. they weren't able to score more than 1 goal largely because their offensive half wasn't as good as us. if we play brazil i say 60% chance basile will start this thing. milito is too slow for the point man, crespo would of been perfect. but now if we play this we should go with tevez. and cambiasso + messi outside midfielders would balance it out pretty nicely.

both gago and mascherano can transform into offensive elements. but against brazil we should let them stay home

    ReplyDelete
  119. there u see how that run was produced by tevez. if milito was in his place i bet he wouldn't be able to do it.

    ReplyDelete
  120. This is a LOVEFEST now !

    ReplyDelete
  121. PATO the butterfly hunter builds up a killer counter-attack!

Nice pass by TEVEZ and great finish by ROMAN.

    4-0!

    ReplyDelete
  122. i want a picture of that shot for my blog. if you guys see that, they hugging, could u sent me?

    ReplyDelete
  123. "Butterfly Hunter"-very nice !

    ReplyDelete
  124. Rio: Much as I love him, I'm always surprised to see Diego Milito running. (And people say that about Roman...) So you're right.

    Roman!

    We want more!

    ReplyDelete
  125. Johnny...it is the literal translation for CAZADOR DE MARIPOSAS. Use it for when a keeper tries to catch a high ball and only grabs thin air!

    ReplyDelete
  126. gg, peru pwned

    ReplyDelete
  127. Full time

    4-0

    Bring on the sombrero boys!

    ReplyDelete
  128. Anonymous5:44 pm

Now why couldn't they play like this in the first half? Oh thats right Milito was playing in the first half.

    ,Jack

    ReplyDelete
  129. Alright! Good job in the second half for our boys.

Now onto the first on-form, solidly organised opponent with a bit of offensive bite. Hopefully our players will get a good rest in before hand.

    ReplyDelete
  130. They did play like that at times in the first half, they just didn't score.:)

    ReplyDelete
  131. While we're here: opinions on Veron's performance (independent of what you may think of him), anyone? Should he start against Mexico?

    ReplyDelete
  132. Anonymous5:50 pm

Can not wait till the Mexico-Argentina game. If I could pick one team and fans I hate more than anything it has to be the Mexicans. Just everything about how they play and how their fans think they have any shot of winning a world cup it just gets under my skin. But a solid game, I just wanted Carlitos to score a goal, he did a lot of work.

    ReplyDelete
  133. As for Veron, I think he is trying to remodel his game to fit in. It's not as though he's making alot of mistakes, he just looks uncomfortable. Plus, I think his marking skills are not what you want from that position. Overall, he is not adding a whole lot.

    ReplyDelete
  134. next game should start with 4-3-1-2 and attempt to do the samething. then final start 4-2-3-1 and drop veron.

    ReplyDelete
  135. Second half... DAMN! Honestly, why hasn't Tevez started yet? Milito has gotten a few chances and nothing. Tevez is on there for 10 seconds and already the team starts playing better and the goals come in.

Riquelme is playing amazing right now. Thats the way he SHOULD be playing. Hopefully it's not just a one game stint. Cambiasso had a better match then before, but thats not saying much. Veron looks lost out there. Mascherano... I don't know what to say.

    ReplyDelete
  136. Anonymous6:04 pm

Thanks all for the threads. I enjoyed it. I only caught the first half at home and managed to catch ROMAN's first goal as i had to leave to reach on time for a meeting. Would appreciate if anyone could post some links for the highlights. Thanks again and now Bring On Mexico.

I have to agree with you johnny, i have to say that VERON is findding difficulty gelling into this team and he looks very uncomfortable. I guess his blend of football is not suited for this setup by BASILE.

    Cheers,
    Alwin

  138. My Boca buddy just emailed me that the 4th goal was a Boca family reunion-Pato to Carlitos to Roman ! Ha Ha ! It will be interesting to see if Coco goes Carlitos to start against Mexico. We give up height, but very dangerous.
