Argentina-Paraguay: Match Coverage

All set for our last first round match in this Copa America.

Our team will be looking to beat Paraguay and avoid Mexico in the quarterfinals. And will do it with the return of Carlos TEVEZ to the starting lineup!

Traditional Blue and white stripes. Javier ZANETTI back to wear the captain's armband and we are set to go!

VAMOS ARGENTINA!

1st minute - Long ball for TEVEZ, Aldo BOBADILLA gets first to it.
-------------
7th minute - Carlitos tries his luck from outside the box. Weak shot, straight to BOBADILLA's hands.
-------------
13th minute - Argentina very close to open up the score. PALACIO sent a cross from the left. LUCHO gets it on the right and crosses it back to the middle where a diving AIMAR almost connects in front of an empty net, with BOBADILLA covering the near post.
-------------
28th minute - Argentina pretty much in control. LUCHO tries from long range and the ball goes over the bar.
-------------
33th minute - Paraguay with their first real chance. A hand-ball by a Paraguayan midfielder when LUCHO challenged him near their box. The referee waved play-on and on the other side of the field, Salvador CABAÑAS forced ABBONDANZIERI to make a superb save. PATO needed treatment after that action but looks OK to continue.
------------
38th minute - Carlitos with a fierce shot from outside the box. Just wide to the left.
------------
42nd minute - Fernando GAGO, with not a long history of scoring goals -I think he scored only one in more than 100 matches for Boca-, he sends a bullet from outside the box and it went over the bar. Nice effort.
------------
45th minute - Terrible foul on PALACIO just outside the box. GONZALEZ (already booked) went from behind and clearly fouled PALACIO. That was a red card and a dangerous free-kick for us. The referee gave none of those things.
------------
HALF TIME whistle is blown.

START OF SECOND HALF

46th minute - Salvador CABAÑAS forces CATA to make a diving tackle and deflect the ball for a corner kick.

-------------

49th minute - LUCHO finds CARLITOS just outside the box, the Apache shots and the ball kisses the left post before it goes out. So close for TEVEZ!

-------------

53rd minute - The woodwork saves Paraguay again! Nice pass from Carlitos to PALACIO. The Jewell shots with his right and the ball hits the bar. A great effort.

-------------

55th minute - AIMAR sees IBARRA wide open on the right. Hugo sends a cross to the far post and a defenders heads it out for a corner kick when CAMBIASSO was ready to score.

-------------

67th minute - Double substitution for Argentina. MASCHERANO in for LUCHO. MESSI replaces CAMBIASSO.

-------------

75th minute - Controversy as MESSI is fouled and Paraguay almost score on the counter-attack -just like in the first half-. PATO makes a good save. But I'm worried with Jorge LARRIONDA horrible refereeing.

-------------

79th minute - Argentine finally finds the goal that send them top of Group C. Great move by MESSI on the left, MASCHERANO gets the ball just outside the box, after a defender tried to clear with a header, and surprises the whole World with a lovely touch to the far post. No chance for BOBADILLA. Argentina 1-0 Paraguay.

FIRST EVER GOAL FOR JAVIER MASCHERANO FOR ARGENTINA!

-------------

FULL TIME in Barquisimeto. Argentina top of Group C, only team with perfect record in this Copa America.

We take on Peru on Sunday.

VAMOS ARGENTINA!

    Thanks Amigo..will catch it :)

Paraguayans showing some neat footwork..thats kinda rare.

Anyway, they seem to be possessing the ball more, but something about our team is that we look younger and good to see TEVEZ chasing the balls everywhere.

    ReplyDelete
  4. We are being careless in possession. But we are trying to pass the ball around and I trust, eventually, something good will come out of that intention.

    GAGO started the game well.

  5. Very slow game so far.

Clearly, Paraguay is the best team we've faced so far. And the only one who didn't score against us in the first 10 minutes! :)

    Good sign! hahaha!

PALACIO looking dangerous on the right.

    Corner kick for us.

    Here comes CATA!

PALACIO seems very mobile, he drops deep from the right wings. Can he play as a right winger naturally?

    ReplyDelete
  7. Paraguay with only three defenders. Yes. They are packing the midfield with 5 men. But I'm not sure if it is the right thing to do to try and contain Argentina with a back line of three men.

    ReplyDelete
  8. Yes Alwin, PALACIO is very complete when it comes to play on the right or the left.

As you've seen, he sent a cross in from the left (with the left foot) and then he appears very often on the right.

But most of all, he is flashing fast!

Not for nothing he is nicknamed THE LIGHTNING!

  9. I always got the sense that Palacio was more a support striker than an out and out finisher. He's definitely got pace.

    ReplyDelete
  10. The Venezuelans in the crowd, are chanting: MESSI, MESSI, MESSI.

It appears they want to see LIO in action!

    Not very likely...

    ReplyDelete
  11. Hi Linda! You always show up around the 30th minute!

  12. Anonymous6:28 pm

Yes i can see he is super fast. A nice backheel by Cambiasso.

I would think PARAGUAY will be playing for the draw and try to catch us on the counter. We are in control now and i just love to see ARGENTINA playing the ball around, nice touches and lovely to watch.

    ReplyDelete
  13. Nice to see how we move off the ball.

Even AIMAR helps out in trying to win the ball back.

And it is also lovely to see how all our players, especially the midfielders, are good on the ball.

Not a lot of teams in the World can say that.

Look at Italy and GATUSSO...for example.

This line up is not working, every little pass here and there Paraguay is getting and kicking away. Bring in Messi! for Palacio( He is a Boca legend, but is not fit to play on the Argentine NATL team)

  15. What is that, ref????

Terrible foul on PALACIO just outside the box.

GONZALEZ (already booked) went from behind and clearly fouled PALACIO.

That was a red card and a dangerous free-kick for us.

He gave none of those things.

    A joke of a referee!

    Half time.

  16. Seba: Hi! I always show up around this time because by now I've calmed down enough to type. In the last two games it was made worse by us conceding early, but I'm breathing much easier this time around.

Messi looked exhausted at the end of the Columbia game. It's good that he's getting a rest. (Apparently Barca have allowed him to miss the pre-season tour to recuperate from Copa America, which is good.)

I love it when we're playing the Argentinean way, with style and by controlling possession.

Very confident on the ball, started off abit shaky but then the passing has improved and a wonderful spectacle to watch. The plus points of the 1st half has definetly got to be the sublime passing and a good impression Rodrigo PALACIO has made for me for the first time in an ALBICELESTE shirt.

    ReplyDelete
  18. The refereeing has been dodgy from the second round of games onwards. Annoying.

Paraguay are quite good at defending, I have to say.

    ReplyDelete
  19. First half impressions-Zanetti, best player on the pitch; I have seen Cata play better-he got caught up the pitch once; we look dangerous and I think the gols will come. Palacio is very fast but goes down if a strong breeze hits him.

    ReplyDelete
  20. Jack...I don't agree.

I think PALACIO was one of the best three players for Argentina in this first half.

ZANETTI is my pick for the best so far.

    PALACIO second. LUCHO third.

IBARRA seems to play in a very high level for Boca, but somehow he just doesn't seem to cut out at an international level.

Lots of basic mistakes. Not doing anything right at the moment.

Not having a complete shocker, but he is far from his normal performances.

    Jack,

Seems and that you and me always seems to have some contradicting views..great fun mate :)

    Cheers,
    Alwin

    ReplyDelete
  22. Seba-I didn't get a good look at the non foul on Palacio. I am so used to seeing him go down at Boca that I am always suspicious !:) Boy, Zanetti is a strong player, is he not ?!

    ReplyDelete
  23. ZANETTI?

I'm still gutted by PEKERMAN not taking him to the last World Cup.

    He's got everything!

Good defending skills. Pace. Ball control. Experience and another Venezuelan girl shaking it in the tribune...sorry mate, can't keep writing...hahahaha

    ReplyDelete
  24. Totally agreed with Johnny and Seba: Zanetti has completely belied his age with his wonderful performances. He just makes one feel secure wherever he's playing.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Teams coming back to the pitch now...

    ReplyDelete
  26. A couple of transfers rumours?

LUCHO is close on agreeing a move to La Liga.

Valencia CF could be his next club.

Despite having a Copa America to forget, Gabriel MILITO is still wanted by FC Barcelona and Juventus.

So whats with Palacio's jedi haircut??

I hope it delivers a goal and soon.

defense is looking shaky but pato is doing quite wel today.

  31. Anonymous7:18 pm

Aimar..blazes it over the bar after some great control

    ReplyDelete
  32. Anonymous7:23 pm

going for the win!! here comes messi and mascherano!!

    ReplyDelete
  33. Clearly missing a big man in the middle tonight.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Anonymous7:27 pm

We need a goal..we need it quick and fast or else its going to be a tough road ahead

    ReplyDelete
  35. Anonymous7:27 pm

THE TIME IS RUNNING OUT!! listen to a bit of MUSE

    ReplyDelete
  36. I don't get this: why, if we have very short players right now, are we insisting with those crosses from IBARRA?

If we will keep using that tactic, then Diego MILITO should start to give us chances to have somebody who can actually head those balls!

If he stays on the bench, then we should avoid sending crosses and play on the ground.

    What do you think?

    ReplyDelete
  37. Johnny...I'm kind of worried here...WE ARE AGREEING ON EVERYTHING! hahaha!

Now tell me...did you like those Venezuelan girls in the stands?

    ReplyDelete
  38. Agreed. Too much action from the flanks, and the chances from the middle have hit wood.

    ReplyDelete
  39. Defense is getting a little sloppy.

    ReplyDelete
  40. Anonymous7:31 pm

man the set pieces are horrific today!

    by both teams.

    ReplyDelete
  47. Anonymous7:37 pm

    He delivers!!!!! Vamos MASCHE!!!

    ReplyDelete
  48. I'll explain this substitution.

    AYALA in for AIMAR.

So ZANETTI or IBARRA will move to the midfield.

AYALA will stay with CATA as centre backs.

And MESSI will take the play-maker role.

    ReplyDelete
  49. I forgot...BURDISSO will now become a wingback.

Too bad I don't have a panoramic view to be able to confirm this.

The TV is not showing how our formation looks like now.

    ReplyDelete
  50. You guys are very lucky because what you've just seen is very historical. It's JAVIER first ever goal

    ReplyDelete
  51. That should have been a yellow on that tackle on Tevez.

    ReplyDelete
  52. What a tournament Masche's having.

    ReplyDelete
  53. Nice info John! And welcome to this match thread!

I remember MASCHE scoring in a Youth World Cup against the USA in extra time (or very close to the 90th minute).

    I don't remember if it was U17 or U20.

I'm very happy for him. A lovely strike too!

    ReplyDelete
  54. FT!

    Only team with perfect record!

    Lovely!

Soon as Messi came in the game opend up. Wow I was so upset in the first half and a "ticked" off look on my face. I am asking my dad, what in the world is going on? It reminded me of the Chile vs Arg game a month back or so. Glad to get the W and play Peru instead of the Mexicans, but I know the Mexicans always play well aganist us for some damn reason. @Least we get Peru. I think after that who might be match up if Argentina moves on.

I just do not see Palacio ever playing well for Argentina for some reason. He is going to be another Guillermo in my eyes, nothing wrong with that but never be@level where I hope to see him as.

    ,Jack

    ReplyDelete
  56. Excellent result for us, and as Jack says, better Peru than Mexico at this point.

    ReplyDelete
  57. i just wanna say...

I SAW ALL THESE COMING FROM MILES AWAY!

    IN MASCHER WE TRUST!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D

    ReplyDelete
  58. I think Palacio is a very fast finesse player. I hope he stays at Boca. He is a star at Boca but I think would struggle in La Liga (assuming he got enough playing time to do even that).

    ReplyDelete
  59. Anonymous8:24 pm

Man I hate how Copa America is set up.Arg will play Peru then play the winner of Paraguay-Mexico? While Brasil will play Chile(A team they JUST beat) and the winner of that will play the winner of Venz-Uruguay. That is total crap, Arg wins the group and they will go through a harder route. Such a freakin crock I swear.

Mascherano's goal was awesome. So beautiful. Zanetti played extremely well and Messi coming on really helped, he added pace to the attack that we needed. I'm sad Tevez didn't get his goal though, it seemed like he was due one. Aimar was unlucky too with two chances.

HATED the ref, I think he had a Paraguay shirt on underneath his ref's shirt. Two clear free kicks for Argentina but nothing.

Well I was out last night with a few friends and one of them was from Peru, he was telling me that he was preying that Paraguay would tie Argentina so Peru would avoid Argentina. I laughed and told him get ready to get whooped on, and called a bold predictions 4-0 win. He said if some how Peru can just play for a 0-0 draw and then go straight to PK's they might have a shot. I started to really think about this, because their is no ET and etc, straight to PK's. That has got me worried to the later rounds, for example if Argentina faces Mexico and then the two sides go straight to PK's after 90min then who knows, I started to think about the WC and the pk loss. Does anybody share this same concern?
