With all the buzz surrounding Messi this past week and comments coming in left and right, I thought I'd throw in my 2 cents.
Over the past 10-15 years, we've seen many great players come and go. The Brazilian RONALDO, Zinedine ZIDANE, Luis FIGO, RONALDINHO and others. However, none of them was an Argentinian, who at the tender age of 22, has mezmerised the futboling world. After an absolutely amazing week consisting of 8 goals in 3 games, people are already calling MESSI the greatest player of all time or atleast better than MARADONA(which for me means the greatest player of all time). I'm a huge MESSI fan and have been following him since he made his debut for Barcelona, but to call him the greatest of all time or better than MARADONA is a no for me. Can he end up being better than MARADONA? Yes. Can he become the greatest of all time? Yes. IS he better than MARADONA? No.
For us Argentina fans, we've seen a bunch of players being labelled "The next MARADONA". It happened with TEVEZ, AIMAR, RIQUELME and a few others. But no one has come as close as MESSI. Game after game for Barcelona he's scored goals and provided assists and at times single handidly won matches for them. In short, he's Barcelona's hero. However, if one was to take a quick glance at Lionel's statistics with Barcelona and that with the National Team, you wouldn't say it's the same player. People constantly argue and bash this kid from Rosario because he isn't scoring goals for fun with Argentina, but let's take a look at the Top 10 goalscoring lists for the Albicelestes.
1. Gabriel BATISTUTA
56 Goals, 78 Matches
2. Hernan CRESPO

2007 was a big year for La Pulga in terms of goal scoring with the NT. And I'm crediting that to the formation Basile used(well basically continued from what Pekerman started) as well as the players around him. I know statistics don't always show the truth, but 6 goals in 2007 with the National Team isn't bad at all. At times, he's come up pretty clutch for us, scoring when needed(Uruguay at home, Venezuela away and Colombia away, even if we did lose that match). Not to mention against Spain where the defence was absolutely horrible(even if it was a penalty, he was calm under whatever pressure there was and scored it).
We can all sit here, chat and pass the bucket when it comes to debating on MESSI not showing up with the National Team, but MESSI is only 6 goals away from entering the Top 10 goalscoring in the history of the NT and he's only 22. Only 6... and he isn't even an out and out striker. What about the other #10's that we've had or players that were supposed to lead this team to glory? ORTEGA, D'ALESSANDRO, AIMAR, RIQUELME, anyone? Fact is, none of them can single handidly(or were single handidly able) to lead the team to glory like MARADONA did. Nor should they have to do it alone. They need to have the right players and the right formations to succeed. Right now, Messi isn't surrounded with that.
Guaranteed if TEVEZ doesn't get red carded in those two games which cost us valuable points and if he scores that penalty against Ecuador, all this talk about MESSI not showing up with the National Team wouldn't be where it's at today. Not because MESSI isn't underachieving, but because those mistakes by TEVEZ made it that much more difficult for the team to qualify for the World Cup. So naturally, the blame goes to the person who's supposed to be your best player. It was the case with VERON in 2002, RIQUELME and now MESSI. Let's not forget MESSI is the #10 and with this #10 comes great responsibility and pressure. The pressure got to ORTEGA, it got to RIQUELME and so on. Did MESSI ask to be the #10? Last I heard, he initially said no, but later accepted. So of course he deserves some of the blame, but to be in the position he is in now(in terms of pressure) at that age, people need to realise it's incredibly tough. Especially when you have your own fans turning against you(no one here on the blog in particular, just people in Argentina).
Is the pressure getting to MESSI? No doubt, but it doesn't mean he doesn't care about doing well with the National Team. Some people here in the past have talked about MESSI's passion and commitment for the National Team. I'm pretty sure if he didn't care about the team, he wouldn't have taken time off during the beginning of the season to go to Argentina and train for the match against Brazil. I'm sure if he didn't care, he wouldn't have went to the Olympics. And I'm sure that if he didn't care, he would have accepted Spain's offer to play for them instead of playing for Argentina. Go back and watch the match against Germany from this month(as boring as it was) and you'll see MESSI getting frustrated with the game when he almost gets himself red carded. The first was a yellow card for a harsh and late tackle in the second half. Or how about when he jumped to try and stop/control the ball with his hands? I'm sure if he didn't mind not doing well with Argentina he wouldn't have risked getting himself red carded.
Some people need to wake up and realise that whether they like it or not, our best shot at the moment for us to win the World Cup is for MESSI to flip the switch, grab this team from the hell hole it's in(or from the lowest point this team has been in ages... whichever analogy you prefer) and lead it to victory.

many of argentina losses in the world cup due to bad refereeing and lost of concentration. the best chance was 2006 but the gk got red carded and lost on penalty. so unlucky

After media put comparison between Messi and Maradona (thanks God it's finally ceased) now people talking bout Messi and Maradona. Even, players and manager football claiming Messi as same as or better than Maradona. Well, it's not outrageous opinion or comparison, of course (not like Rooney's one). But in my view, the answer remain easy. Maradona still the greatest. How many trophies Messi achieved with club or NT, for me no player in this world can replace El Pibe. Why? Maradona influence entire generation of football, esp. Argentina. Maradona carry all the burden. He lift up Napoli and NT (which is mediocre team at the time) single handedly to highest level. Messi? To be honest, Barca far better ten times than Napoli (even without Messi). What Messi could bring if he plays for Napoli, for instance? NT team right now, far better from 86 team, if we see it from individual. Argentina NT now full of global stars in every position. Admit it. Messi would be greatest. He capable for it. But, not surprass Maradona

"Maradona was probably equal to him from the dead ball but in other things Messi is much better, much faster and much more skillful..."
Hellooowww..somebody give me help! Lotina said 'Maradona probably equal to Messi from dead ball'.
Are these guy try to praise Messi or to insult him and Maradona??? Maradona probably equal to Messi?? Is there any player in the world as good as Maradona in dead ball situation???
Do you think Messi good enough in free kick, diagonal pass, long pass?? He has to learn a lot from old master, the only one 'Diego'.
C'mon, Lotina must be a joke! I agree, Messi become one of greatest. But comparing him to Maradona, it's ridiculous!! And Lotina actualy insult Messi and Maradona by giving these statements.
You people need therapy.
I thought Argentina had all the pieces in the last World Cup (team chemistry, rapport, and strategy). However, they were missing the dead ball guy aka Beckham. No defenses will allow Messi to run free in the WC. Set pieces are a big factor in the latter games vs solid opponents.
Has that changed ? Not really, but you can argue that Argentina has a much easier draw to advance to the quarters. I still don't think the team will have the intangibles to gel in such a short time. One of these days, perhaps Argentina will seek a Dutch strategist as the coach. Hiring a cheerleader won't help Messi.
Anonymous right above me,
in the last wc Argentina were good at dead balls! 3 very important goals after corners and freekicks (against ivory coast, mexiko and the much taller germans), and another correct corner goal disallowed (ayala header against ivory coast).
riquelme was great at corners and freekicks. and we need a player like him just for these situations, even if he would be useless in anything else.
Vitalij from germany
Lionel's skill level, experience, speed, and ball control does not change depending on the uniform he wears.
However, his positioning, team mates, and coaching staff does.
You can not expect him to do what he does for barca, for Argentina every game. With barca he has a much better set of supporting staff, he's positioned properly, not to mention that he trains with barca day in and day out. They are all familiar with eachothers playing style, and positioning. Don't get me wrong I'm not making excuses here. I'm just being realistic.
I think Messi will show up at the world cup. But with Argentina putting so much pressure on him it makes his job A LOT harder, especially at his age. Football is a team game, let's stop blamming one man. Let's face it our beloved Albiceleste is no barca, no national team in the world is....
everybody stop blaming leo ;he's simply the best ;guardiola said an important thing when leo would leave blaugrana for olympic :the most important is messi to be happy ;ruggeri said the same about he's not put in condition to shine with nt;he's simply the best please support him and make him happy and we'll lift the trophe more than once
Messi: "To become a legend one must win the World Cup".
He is correct, and he will become a legend someday.
If not in south Africa, then he can do it in brazil 2014.. Wouldn't that be something...
Mike:
you say if not in 2010 then in 2014...well i have to disagree.
Just like we have an idiot (peckerman) killing our hopes in 2006, we now have an idiot (maradona) killing our hopes in 2010, we will have another idiot by that time also...
I said it before and i say it again, Arg has no good coaches...NONE! they need to have a good tactition to win the WC and this should be a non Arg!!
I agree. Me must support Messi. I think we are clear enough: what happened with national team performance, it's not solely based on messi factor. It's not fair put all blame on him. But in the other hand, u have to realize messi can't avoid burden and responsibility. What makes u great player if u can bear the burden. It's natural argentina people hopes messi can win world cup. So, if he doesn't want take that responsibility, don't go to SA.
if messi is better than diego
THEN WHY ISNT HE BARCAS MIDFIELD GENERAL
AND DRIBBLING SUPER STAR MARADONA WAS BOTH MESSI HAS XAVI BEHIND HIM
MARADONA HAD NO ONE HE HAD HIMSELF
MARADONA RAN GAMES LIKE ROMAN AND VERON IN THERE PRIMES AND SCORED THE MESSI LIKE GOALS
WEN HAS MESSI DICTATED ENTIRE GAMES FROM MIDFIELD NEVER
DIEGO MARADONA IS CONSIDERED THE GREATEST OF FREE KICK TAKERS HOW MANY FREE KICKS DOES MESSI SCORE
MARADONA TOOK A FULHAM OR WEST HAM LEVEL SIDE TO GLORY ON HIS OWN NAPALI
MESSI PLAYS IN THE GREATEST BARCA SIDE EVER SURROUNDED BY GOOD PLAYERS
I DETEST IGNORANCE AND THE IGNORANT
MESSI BETTER THAN DIEGO DREAM THE FUK ON
THE DAY MESSI BEATS ENTIRE TEAMS ON HIS OWN AND RUNS ENTIRE GAMES LIKE A GENIUS MIDFIELD GENERAL AFTER DAYS OF COKE AND BOOZE AND CIGARS AND PROSTITUTES AND NO TRAINING
THEN HE IS AS GOOD AS MARADONA
MESSI IS A FOOTBALLING MACHINE ON A STRICT DIET GIVE HIM A CPL OF BOTTLES OF BOOZE WATCH HIS GAME CALAPSE
GIVE MARADONA A POUND OF COKE A CRATE OF BEERS 10 CIGARS 5 BOTTLES OF CHAMPAGNE 10 HOOKERS
LEAVE HIM IN A ROOM SELF DESTROYING NOCK ON THE DOOR 12 HOURS LATER TELL HIM KICK OFFS IN 5 MINUTES WATCH HIM GO OUT THERE AND DESTROY TEAMS SINGLE HANDEDLY
WEN MESSI CAN DO THAT THEN HIS AS GOOD AS MARADONA
YOU PEOPLE ARE IGNORANT
IN OTHER WARDS PUT MARADONA IN MESSIS CLEAN LIFE AND SUPEER FITNESS
MARADONA WOULD HAVE BEEN 10X BETTER STILL
THIS ISNT A HOW MANY CUPS AND LEAGUES ARGUMENT
ITS WHO OUT OF THE 2 WERE THE BETTER FOOTBALLING HUMAN BEING THE ANSWE IS ALWAYS MARADONA
COMMON FLAMING SENSE
Approvingly your article helped me truly much in my college assignment. Hats afar to you dispatch, choice look progressive in behalf of more cognate articles in a jiffy as its sole of my pet question to read.
Loved your post, Roy. And I share your views and your take on the matter.
I'll speak more about it when I have the chance.
But I wanted to stop here for a second to address those messages written by one anonymous poster all in caps.
First of all, I don't think this should be a competition. I think we should all feel immensely proud that two of the best players in the history of the game were born in Argentina.
I think Diego is the best in history and I think at this rate, MESSI could surpass PELE and Diego himself. Just give him time.
But again, this is not a competition between MESSI and MARADONA. At least that's not the way I like to see it.
The fact that MARADONA was a perfect example of self-destruction, takes nothing away from MESSI and should not be used as an argument in this discussion.
I don't think a player living the same life Diego has lived in his playing days could do anything in this ultra-modern excessively-athletic present-day football.
The same argument is used in Argentina by old people who will swear that José Manuel MORENO (a very talented River Plate forward who played in the 40s) was better than Diego and DISTEFANO and PELE and you name it. They would argue that MORENO would eat a 'puchero' (a dish with like 10933181132413 calories) and would drink a bottle of red wine at lunch before the games and would still score goals at will. They forget that MORENO's rivals would have probably been eating and drinking the same!
I'm not saying Diego's rivals did drugs too. Not at all. He stood out because he was the most talented player ever. And most of all, he stood out because no player ever in the history of the game had a heart like his. Period.
MESSI's got a long way to go and I can see he's got an enormous desire to be the best and to win trophies for Barcelona and Argentina. Let's stay behind him and support him. He is clearly a genius and nobody in the world can touch him.
One more thing...he is only 22 (will turn 23 during the World Cup). At that age, Diego was playing his first World Cup in Spain and was famously red-carded for a horrible tackle (out of frustration and perhaps some inexperience) in our defeat against Brazil.
Lio already has one World Cup under his belt. He is about to play his second and if people insists comparing him to MARADONA then they should only ask him to win the World Cup in 2014, being 26 years-old, like Diego was in Mexico.
Time is on Lio's side and I for one would like to see no limits in his game and would like him to be as good as he can be.
That way Brazilians would have to settle with having the third best player in the history of the game.
Mohd, be more optimistic man. If messi is able to replicate what he is doing with Barca with the NT, then any normal coach can lead the team to glory (like what happened in 1986) Bielsa is an excellent coach who was able to create an excellent team once.
Anyways, i'm not hopeless in the next WC, we can do it with some luck and miracles by messi and co.
Sebastian:
"That way Brazilians would have to settle with having the third best player in the history of the game."
you really believe Pele is the second best player after Maradona!? I thought a person with your knowledge would know better. Pele is the most overrated player of all times, he is good but the media made him a genius and his fellow mafia-based Fifa friends made him a legend.
Fadi:
Bielsa was a very good coach in preparing the team and setting up the formation, but he was weak in doing tactical changes when they were needed. WC 2002 was an example in that in 3 matches he was unable to change the tactics.
I have no doubt in my mind that deep in his heart Messi would love to perform better for Argentina than does for Barcelona. I have faith in him and and i have no doubt that when the time is right this kid called Messi is going to surprise everyone. You can see the passion and each of those players eyes. We love you Messi, keep it up. As Argentine fans and argentines we need to show full support and faith in our team and we will achieve. This is not the time to criticise this is the time to show ours togetherness and support. Stop criticising and start showing unconditional love for all our players. To all the players, the coach, and everyone who is doing their best to make things happen, i love you all. God bless and see you at the finals inshaallah.
I think that Seba was speaking in jest about Pele. Just like it's not fair to denigrate Messi for maradona, it's not really great to diss Pele, who was tremendous (at least from the tapes that I've seen of him), and who many still consider the best ever. It is interesting, though, that many Brazilians consider Garrincha a better player than Pele. Who knows.
At some point we should just be grateful to see these people. I can say that Messi is one of those players that people will be talking about 20 years from now. People will say, "I saw Messi in his prime. I was there."
Blaming Tevez exclusively for our woes in WCQ is a bit stretch... yes he had some part of responsability but still, our anemic gameplan and lots of disappoiting individual performances are the most to blame IMO.
As for Messi, the hype around him is ridiculous right now. I hope he will have his shoulders solid enough...
NO MATTER WHAT TRUE ALBICELESTE FAN WILL ALWAYS SUPPORT U MESSI!!! ONLY IDIOTS WILL HATE U!!! SO DONT WORRY!!! KEEP GOING ON AND MAKE HISTORY IN SOUTH AFRICA!!! VAMOS MESSI!! VAMOS ARGENTINA!!
Thats what i'm talking about Argentina777. That the kind of attitude we need. Thank you.
Saying Diego is better because he drank and did drugs, and still performed is ridiculous. I'm not saying messi is better or Diego is better, I'm just saying bring valid arguments to the table. I think the fact that Diego can not controll himself made him worse as a player. He could have been much much greater than he was.
By the way, cocaine is a performance inhancing drug.
i have heard too much! no Messi is not even close to Maradona at the moment! Can he be better? yes he can, but at the moment he is not close!
remember that 3 matches ago this argument did not even exist. he played 3 great matches and suddenly he is better than Maradona! this is what i call media madness.
Messi should learn to become a leader, the heart and sould of his team before he is worthy of Maradona comparison. and that is some EXTREMELY difficult to gain. time however is on Messi's side. let's see what will happen in the years to come but for now please stop this comparison. maybe tonight, maybe tomorrow, maybe next month Messi's hot streak will end and the comparison will vanish!
How many will Messi score today against Ossusuna? Gabriel Milito starting again for Barca....
The usually intense Carlos Tevez is even more intense today than I have ever seen him. Maybe he has been inspired by the "new Maradona".:)
Just as I feared Messi didn't perform to his fullest potential today and I have to admit I kind of exoected that becasue of all the talk in the past week of him being the best in the world. Don't get me wrong, he played well as always but he was just so frustrated out there today when he would lose the ball or get fouled etc. He was even booked for kicking the ball away after not receiving a call for a foul.... uncharacteristic of him. He did strike the post but also missed a few chances through out the match. I don't want to make excuses for him but I think it has to do with all the hype from this past week.
As for other Argentines, Julio Cruz scored a lovely bicycle kick to help keep Lazio out of the relegation zone while Pastore scored a tip in off a set piece to help Palermo chase a Champions League spot.
Milito didn't play for my INTER today but the usual Cambiasso, Samuel and Zanetti started and played like they always do.... flawless in a 3-0 victory over Livorno while Milan lost to Parma 1-0. This gives Inter a 4 point lead atop of the table again. I know this isn't real Argentine news but I'm happy so I thought I'd share. Crespo did however recieve a standing ovation from Parma fans when subbed off. He didn't score though, anyone know what this is about or did he just have a good game?
It's a good thing Messi did not score today. I mean it will continue in a snowball. He had a few chances but he was marked out for the most of the games. Three Osasuna players were always around him.
It's clear that Messi wasn't giving it his all in the match against Osasuna. Plus, for most of the match, he was playing in midfield(more or less Xavi's role). I'm not worried, because like I said, it was obvious he wasn't giving it his all.
As for the booking, the ref(along with the linesmen) were having a terrible match and that was not a foul on Messi, so he got pissed and kicked the ball away. He got pissed, it happens, I wouldn't worry about it.
FINALLY, ITS OFFICIAL: MESSI WILL BE THE BEST PLAYER AT THE WORLD CUP:
http://goal.com/en/news/1863/world-cup-2010/2010/03/25/1848308/world-cup-2010-brazil-legend-pele-expecting-cristiano
The Jinx strikes agains...LOOOL
Hahahaha..well done Mohd. When you hear pele opinion, the result is always contradiction with his statements.
Maradona is at the Boca vs. River match today and he looks just about fatter than ever. C'mon Diego ! Quit eating so much ! Por favor !
Higuain scores another brace. He can not stop scoring! Ustari did a whatever job, at times looked very poor and at times did great saves.
Here is a neat little article on Argentina and 'coinencidences' going into the World Cup....
http://www.fifa.com/worldcup/news/newsid=1185417.html#destiny+calling+argentina
maradona praised riquelme, and he was in da classico match,i have a feeling ater that 2 hours meeting wid messi,he may wants to get riquelme back.
maradona yesterday said "If I had to change for his good, I'd change,"
may be he was at la bobmanera for a reason.
Don't get me wrong, I like riquelme. But we don't need him.. Maradona should be at the inter games watching cambiasso if he wants to strengthen our midfield. Anonymous, where did u read this?
On Olé...
Cambiasso isn't a proper substitution for Roman, they play different positions. If we aren't using Roman, Aimar or Lucho should be in his place.
But I do agree, of course Cambiasso should be used. No defensive pairing midfield in the world would be better than Cambiasso and Mascherano.
....Garay out for 'at least' 10 days with a muscle injury according to goal.com
When Milito scored, a huge headline: Milito scores again! If he scores more than 1 goal, we say, "the most prolific striker in the world has just scored again!" When Gonzalo scores, "ssssshhhh don't tell anyone..." What about we name this forum: Diego Milito' Mundo Abiceleste? How does that sound?
Huh anonymous, Diego Milito plays in serie a which is a very defensive league and not la liga which is free flowing and goals-galore. Inter is a strong team but they don't have so many firepower like madrid to gift higuain goals on his plates. Inter mostly play tactical games where even a single goal can be priceless. Either way, Diego Milito is a MUCH MUCH better STRIKER than higuain in my opinion.
Ibra who was the best striker in serie A in 2009 is a huge disappontment in the most free flowin and goals galore la liga as you say. Henry was a legend in EPL and could score just few goals in la liga. Tavano was a great scorer in serie A, but was a total garbage in la liga. Are you sure you're in 2010? Yes serie A was a very defensive league 5-10 years ago. Now, we see a match ended 3-3 or something like that quite often!
Yes I don't say anything without seeing the statistics. Just look at 2008-09 stats, 103 more goals were scored in la liga than serie a. Smarta$s.
That's 2008-2009 right? Do you know the stats this year? Oops..
Lm10ARG: I'm sorry bro but as of now, Higuain scores more goals than Milito, every match he scores 2 goals (none of them were penalties). Now if it were my choice to choose the attack i would play all Higuain - Milito - Messi in attack but if we had to choose one between Higuain or Milito, I'd go for Higuain although i'd also be delighted if Milito is chosen instead as long as it's not one of Tevez,Aguero or Palermo...
Smarta$s anonymous, I also know the stats for this year. Just check the goals per game ratio and u will see. And messidona19, Milito, Tevez and even Aguero are LOT better players than higuain. FACT. Tevez and Aguero are wonderkids and Milito is a natural no. 9, hte best poacher Argentina has. Higuain is none, he is neither a wonderkind nor as good as Milito.
Milito will not play at the WC as a starter and will never be a part of the national team after the WC which is a fact. Milito missed his chance being a star in his early days, if he played this well when he was 20,21,22 or even 23 he would be a regular but he started too late but even then he would have never pushed Batistuta or Crespo out of a spot but would of got a spot and could of learned from them. Now the likes of Tevez,Kun,Higuain have all surpassed him in talent. Tevez,Higuain,Kun, and even the likes of Lisandro have done more for club and country then Milito has ever done. In 5 years at Racing and I said 5 years with well over 130 games he scored less then 40 goals for them. Again it is his fault for being under the radar for so long. Higuain,Kun,Tevez were all stars at their clubs in Argentina. Milito's hard work got him at where he is at now, but Tevez,Kun,Higuain, even Lisandro were all naturally gifted footballers. Even look at El Torito was one of the true stars in Argentino football. Massive star in Argentina in the early turn of the 2000's. I believe it was one of the great generation of youth players with El Torito,Apache,Conejo were stars. Milito did not make much noise back home and he is somewhat of an outcast now. Respect what Diego picks and however it goes down. Playing should of, could of, would of is like beating a dead horse there is no point for it. And saying Higuain is not a wonderkid, you seriously need to watch some Argentino futbol. Or maybe pick up a magazine from Argenina's news papers. You go to Argentina and say Higain is not a "wonderkid" you will get laughed at from morning till night, and will be told you do not know a thing about the asado. You probably even missed the superclásico and can not name 4 or 5 players on a team like Los Leprosos without using the internet. Get off watching La Liga, Serie A, EPL for a change and turn it on to Argentino football and you will see who is talented but again you likely only watch the national team and teams like Inter and Barcelona, Manchester City and those who are front runners.
well put
