Inter Milan produced a convincing 3-0 victory over Cagliari, subsequently moving them 10 points clear at the top of Serie A over city rivals AC Milan.
Already 1-0 up, they made it two in the 20th minute when defender Walter SAMUEL out jumped Cagliari’s Michele CANINI to head the ball in. Two minutes into the second half, the match was pretty wrapped up when Goran PANDEV and Samuel ETO’O linked up well to create a chance for Inter’s man of the moment, Diego MILITO. His low right footed shot from 10 yards took his tally to 14 goals.
In another Serie A match; Catania claimed a crucial away win over Lazio thanks to new signing Maxi LOPEZ. Remember that we did actually talked a little about a possible transfer involving him in our last pod cast.
Lucas BARRIOS continues his good form in the German’s Bundeliga when he scored for Dortmund in their 2-3 defeat against Frankfurt. In the French league, Gonzalo BERGESSIO was on target for St Etienne in their 3-0 win over Monaco. While Lucho GONZALEZ also had a goal in Marseille’s 5-1 hammering over Valenciennes.
Tomas COSTA scored for FC Porto in their 3-0 win over Naval 1° Maio in the Portuguese League. Lastly in the Greek Super League, Sebastian CARRERA scored twice for Asteras Tripoli but his team went down 3-4 to Ergotelis.

news from elmundodeportivo said that julio grondona gives ultimatum to maradona. Last friendly with Germany next month could be the last match for maradona due to NT performance. Any confirmation for this reportation??
This would be my team of the week after sat. and sun. performances.
4-2-3-1

??
Nice line up Dave! Though I'm a bit concern about using MILITO in left back position. Perhaps this was just decide on an accommodation basis.
Now about the news, I'm not going to buy anything that comes from the tabloid until we get a proper verification about this from a reliable source. I doubt anything like this is going to happen. Not now at least, maybe after the World Cup but that depends on how far progress in South Africa.
That's a World Class Line up Dave P. I hope these players all continue their form.
As for the news about Grondona? I don't think it will happen, it's just wishful thinking, FIFA want to see Maradona in the world cup.
Btw beautiful run from Zanetti for the first!
Plz plz I do hope the news on elmundodeportivo is true. If it is, I hope we get trashed by germany in munich. That way, at least maradroga won't coach us in WC. We already got humbled by catalonia which is not even an official national team. Getting thrashed by germany will do us long-time favor. Go germany go, trash us in munich.
Some people said here before that firing maradona now will only do us harm rather than favor. But guys, nigeria fired their coach last week. I believe we should be more than fine if maradroga gets fired next month after a potential germany humiliation.
if he was to go then who to replace him??
my vote would go to packerman to be allowd to get redemption for the 2006 mistakes that cost us the w.c
Jesus man, some people still have hope that Maradona will get fired, and guess what? He is not! Enough with bogus releases. Like it or not, Diego is our coach. Still playing the same old tune. When the name of players gets released, people will complain about that. It is a repeating cycle over and over again. Just face the facts.
Jack!
Jack,
We had the same discussion before. and again i ask you; what is a blog if not for people saying what the hell thay want to (as long as its decent of course)!
So if not sharing your opinion about what you think is best and what is going wrong, what exactly can you blog about?
i agree with you maradona will not be fired and i am afraid he will not even select the players all the fans are crying for...but damn at least let us talk about it man :)
Maradona isn't going to get fired and Riquelme is going to return. It's a shame but its all true, stop kidding yourselves.
Haha, typo....
Riquelme ISN'T going to return.
Mohd,
Ever watched a movie over and over again? Or ever have to read a book over and again? Doesn't get a bit tiring? People will want Diego's head on a silver platter a day before the WC. We have a feeling who is going to be at the World Cup. Like I said, lets work with what we have instead of playing fantasy land.
I agree with GK, Diego will not get the door nor will Riquelme come back. Having false hope just brings your frustration level even higher.
There can be only be 1 champion. We have had great teams with great coaches and have not won it or even close in the last 3-4 World Cup's. So who says with the right coach and players have gone through and won it all? Brasil in 06, great group of players and ran into France. The same could be said about the Spaniards,Dutch,Brasilians and other elite teams. I can not recall a team that has waltzed to the trophy and won it. For that 1 month you have to be on your game, nobody really picked the Italians to win 06, nobody picked the Brasilian's in 02, and the French in 98. And al those teams had poor qualifying teams and excelled when it counted. So who says we can not do the same in June?
Jack!
The French were hosts for 98 and did not have to qualify but the fans were unsure how they would do.
Jack!
Jack,
That's interesting and somewhat true: favorite teams rarely win. But i do not agree at all that we had great coaches in the previous world cups!
for god' sake, it still really hurts (i mean HURTS) when i remember how Peckerman single handedly eliminated us against Germany in 2006. That world cup was OURS! and in 2002 can you believe Bielsa did not call Riquelme who was at his best, and Saviola who was Barca's risiing talent..1998 leaving redondo out...and the list goes on.
it is really frustrating and it always make me ask the question: what would have Arg achieved if only they had good coaches?!
as for this world cup, i am prepared for a public humiliation. with Otemendi (and the likes) leading our defence and Veron, Maxi, and Jonas leading the midfield...man the idea alone gives me the creeps!
Mohd,
You must have really short term memory. 02, the most creative footballer we had was not Riquelme, it was Veron! And Aimar came right behind him! As for Saviola being a rising star, he had a exceptional U-20 WC in 01 but there was no room and there was no way he was going to start. The same could be said about Kun in 06, maybe the best footballer in Argentina in 06 but did not get called up. Look what Bielsa has done to Chile, has completely changed the dynamic of Chilean football.
2006- You state that Pekerman cost us the world cup? You can not be serious can you? I bet you were singing another tune after the S&M game. Hey we had misfortunes in that game vs the Germans, it happens. You can not assume that the World Cup was ours, we still had to win two more games. And you can not make rash judgments as that. Game by game.
As for Redondo being left out. Hey, the coach had put his foot down. Redondo did not agree with it and was left out.
You sit back and just blame the coaches, and never blame the players. It's never the players fault for playing like shit? We were playing like shit when Basile was our coach! Are you forgetting that? Trust me I want Diego gone as much as anybody but I can deal with the fact that he is our coach and we live and die by it. You can sit back and give all the credit in the world to the players when they are playing great, but when the team plays like shit, you blame the coach. So you tell me, what coach will please you? Because it appears that you love to blame the coach and never the team. I am going in this World Cup as I always do, and that is with hope and pride. I am not hiding or waiting for humiliation, I live and die by my national team colors!
Jack!
Jack,
In 2002 Veron was great, true. a great passer of the ball and a true leader. much like Xavi now (only even better in certain aspects - like shooting and long range passes). But Veron and Xavi are not the creative players - they are the engines. Iniesta and Messi are. these are the players that can out of nothing dribble past 2-3 defenders and CREATE something out of nothing.
In 2002, Riquelme was that type of player that we missed in the midfield. Need a refresher: watch Boca vs Real in late 2000 and see what Riquelme did to Makalele! Aimar: never really made with the NT. Saviola: true Batistuta and Crespo were our best options but he would have added a different dimension.
HOWEVER, My biggest surprise is that you consider Peckerman not at fault in 2006. Are you serious?! Start counting:
1. Leaving Zanetti out and spending all the world cup searching for a pathetic right back to play. first Burdisso (who was just OK, and then Scaloni who was catastrophic)
2. You are 1-0 up against germany. you take out your best player (Riquelme) and your star striker (Crespo).
3. THE FATHER OF ALL CRIMES: you keep Messi (and Aimar) on the bench when you want to play counter attacks. and you start using Cambiasso and Cruz to counter attack!!!!
I do not spare the players from the blame. but truly we have had such horrible coaches..oh yes including Basile.
What coach will please me? i think Arg should realise what England realised and act accordingly!
sebastian> have you seen the new maradona's declarations? I think this deserves a note...
I guess msi2 is referring to Maradona's latest comment about Riquelme-which is that he is NOT returning to the NT. The more depressing part of the article I read was Maradona's reference to the the local argentine players and the "smiles on their faces" when they get suited up to play for the NT.
I could give a shit whether or not players are smiling. This fascination Diego has with finding diamonds in the rough slaving away in Argentina is for me the worst part of his managing the team. He is clearly going to leave out a number of deserving players(most of whom busted their asses in Argentina before going to Europe-doesn't that count ?)currently in Europe, so that he can do his "look what I found in Argentina" shtick. This would be laughable if it wasn't so serious.
Jack, Mohd....
You both raise good arguments. Like Jack I have hope and pride and I believe despite all this turmoil that we have a chance to make an impact in this World Cup and possibly go all the way. We have to believe as fans, we owe that to the players. Like I said before, I'd rather go in as the underdog rather than the favourites becasue when we are the favourites we choke.
Referring to 2006, I have to agree with Mohd. Pekerman did blow the World Cup in my opinion. Leaving Zanetti out wouldn't have made us champions but it certainly would have helped our backline. His substitutions and leaving Messi/Aimar out still boggle my mind til this day. We could have and should defeated Germany and we all know the Italians wouldn't have gotten by us, I say that without a doubt in my mind.
But like alot of people on here say, its a blog and it is meant for debate.
Godddamn I love Mundo!
i like peckerman but i agree with how he blew it with the subs etc ad i also believe wewould e won it as for 2002 bati went to the wc on repuation only, he was alwful and could bearly hit a barn door at the time.
a fantastic player who had reached the end and was just as aweful all that season in italy before the wc.
i agree veron was to be the man for 2002 be he also did n stand up and to me never really has for the nt(i blame manure for ruining him as he was amazing at lazio)
You just said Veron and Xavi are not the creative players? Xavi last season had almost 30 assists for Barca compare that to 10 to Iniesta. Both Veron and Xavi are very creative. Okay maybe less flashy then Riquelme but as effective in 02. And lets not forget Ortega was in the starting line up. Ortega was donning the #10 and had some nice moments in that 02 World Cup. And again Aimar was on the bench which that season he was a big part of the La Liga champions in Valencia. And Bielsa style was not to slow down the game, it was a fast pace productive football. Nobody was complaining about him when Argentina waltz into WCQ. As soon as there is bad luck, no it can never be the players, it was the coaches fault for not picking a player that was hardly(or ever) used during the WCQ.
Pekerman is not at fault. You can not sit back and blame him. We lost our GK and had to lose a sub for that. Yes he took out Riquelme and brought in Cambiasso. He needed a holding MF for the game. He took out Crespo and brought in Cruz. Crespo had done all but nothing in that game(And I maybe the biggest Crespo fan here). Did you want him to bring in Messi? Who would all but do nothing vs the lengthy Germans(All that time of his career). It is very easy to say Pekerman left Messi on the bench. What if Messi became a flop and a nobody then what? We can not assume that he would of changed the game around. Yes not taking Zanetti was a problem, but players get left out all the time. Micho was left out as well.
So you want us to follow the English? You are forgetting that we have never had a foreign coach and I personally would not like a foreign coach unless if it is a Guss or maybe Pep(who knows Lio very well). But I still would be unsure about it. Because you must know how it is to be a Argentino, know about the passion, the life, the culture, EVERYTHING! Bringing in a coach from another country will lack that. We have plenty of coaches in Argentina that can do a good job. Like I said earlier, just take a look at Chile. Wouldn't all of us kill for Bielsa right now? With the attack we have, imagine how we can make us so much better from front to back. But we treated him like shit, and he quit after the 04 Olympics.
Come on Mohd, have a bit of hope and passion for the national team.
Jack!
jack, peckerman got it wrong as he tried to defend a 1-0 lead with 25-30 mins to go as germany had to score our they were out and that ment they had to keep pushing further upfield to try to score and in doing that their become gaps in their defence, the best thing was to keep attacking and get the 2nd goal instead of playing defencive till the ft whistle.
he should have keept attacking and not gone against his style of play and tried to go defencive.
Pablo, it is very easy for you to sit back and say this since the plan failed. What if it had worked? Very easy to nitpick when things do not go accordingly.
Jack!
Jack,
We won't agree :)
but regarding passion! although i am not from Argentina but i have been a die-hard fan for this team since ever i learned about football...and i will continue to be
anomyous i kno what you are saying but peckerman played attacking football and attacking football and he changed his blief for just that moment in time but you are correct as the say "hingsight is a wonderful thing"
i believe in peckerman and thats why i wanted him to stay and would be happy to see him as nt coach again as im sure he would not make the same error in jugdement again.
