Coco Names Six Additional Players

Coco BASILE has named the remainder six players that will join the rest of the squad for Argentina's upcoming World Cup qualifier. There was some surprise inclusion and one notable returnee.

The six players are Agustin ORION, Christian LEDESMA, Gonzalo BERGESSIO, Pablo BARRIENTOS (all from San Larenzo), Juan Roman RIQUELME (Boca Juniors) and Leandro SOMOZA (Velez Sarsfield).

The most notable highlight of this inclusion has to be the four players from San Larenzo, which I'm not surprise as they are the current leaders in the Torneo Apertura. Perhaps, I would like to hear from those who has more knowledge on the domestic scene to give us their though about this inclusions.

However there is a bad news for now as Maxi RODRIGUEZ might be doubtful for the qualifiers after limping off in the Barca/Atletico match last Saturday.

Now to some European football from Sunday's fixture, starting with Italy's Serie A.

Ezequiel LAVEZZI scored in the first minute to put Napoli ahead of Genoa. But the home side rallied back to score three goals including one from Diego MILITO. German DENIS pulled one back in the 75th minute. Genoa won the game 3-2 despite finishing with only nine men on the field.

Lisandro LOPEZ was on target for FC Porto in their 2-1 win over arch rival Sporting Lisbon in the Portuguese Liga.

In the Russian Premier League, UEFA Cup holders Zenit St Petersburg trashed Luch-Energiya Vladivostok 8-1 with Alejandro DOMNINGUEZ among the scorer. While Hector BRACAMONTE was on target for FC Moscow in their 2-1 win over YFK Shinnik Yaroslav.

Julio Hernan ROSSI scored from the spot for Neuchatel Xamax in their 3-3 draw with Bellinzona in the Swiss Super League.

While in the English Premiership, Javier ZABALETA was sent off in the match against Liverpool for a mistimed tackle on Xabi ALONSO.

Tennis – Del Potro Lost In the Japan Open Final

Juan Martin DEL POTRO was defeated by Czech Tomas BERDYCH in straight set 1-6 & 4-6 in the Japan Open final. This was his first loss since losing to Andy MURRAY in the US Open. DEL POTRO had won all four of his previous championship matches on the tour.

FIFA Futsal World Cup 2008

Honours were even in Brasilia as Argentina and Ukraine both settled for 2-2 draw in their Group C encounter. It was a thrilling finale as the goals were scored in the last eight minutes of the game.

Leandro PLANAS broke the deadlock first but Dmytro IVANOV equalized with two minutes left to play. A minute later, Sergiy CHEPORNIUK put the Ukrainian in the lead and may have won the game for them. But Argentina went on to equalized with 15 seconds left to play through Diego GIUSTOZZI.

Argentina final group game will be against Guatemala on the 9th of October.

Hi John-I can't speak to all the San Lorenzo players, but I like Gonzalo Bergessio alot. He's my favorite non Boca player. A strong, sturdy offensive minded midfielder who is always a danger to score. He plays full out all the time. A nice addition to the squad. You know Coco usually picks a number of Boca players, but Boca is really struggling right now, so kudos to Coco for going elsewhere.

Oops, Bergessio is listed as a forward ! Still great !

Thanks Johnny for the feedback on BERGESSIO! Let’s hope that Coco won’t waste his time by just keeping him on the bench. I would like our squad being utilize to the max in upcoming matches. As always Coco brings in something new to the team but never does he ever uses them.

From the looks of it, our probable first eleven will be CARIZZO in goal. Javier ZANETTI will be in right back while lets hope its MONZON that will get the nod on the left side. The central pairing will be DEMICHELIS and DIAZ.

In midfield, it may look similar to our Olympic team quartet with DI MARIA (right), RIQUELME (left), MASCHERANO and CAMBIASSO (both center).

Upfront, I’m hoping for a bit of change with MESSI and a target man MILITO.

I just can’t for this weekend and please, please let’s hope there is a wind change this time around. Simply because I have seen how our players flourish at club level and I want to see the same vibe for the national team.

By the way, I’ve just read an interesting article from BBC columnist Tim VICKERY on Roman (Riquelme – one of a dying breed). I’m sure you’ll enjoy reading this.

Hey John, nice recap. You're probably busy with soccer, but have you been following the NBA lately? Luis Scola is making headlines for his dance moves.

Of the local contingent, Bergessio and Ledesma from San Lorenzo are my choice for actually seeing some sub time.

Ledesma has been called up a handful of times before. In my opinion, he is the heart of the San Lorenzo midfield. Basile could look for him to settle down a youngish midfield if Riquelme is out.

Bergessio can be exciting to watch, but so can the rest of the European strikers.

A dark horse is Orion. I'm not a big fan of Argentine keepers these days, so who knows? Great strikers and midfielders, but the defensive positions seem to be lagging a bit behind, especially in goal.

I don't know much about the other two, and think Barrientos was included because San Lorenzo is the best team right now.

hey!.. thnx for the comment you posted on my blog. it's a pleasure to have you back for upcoming nba season. yea. i've heard manu will be back mid-december. that's not a problem, is it? as long as the rest of the spurs stay healthy and win games w/o manu. i really hope he recovers soon, though, to give him some more time to practice and not to stress himself a lot.

=)

I think that Argentina will have troubles again in this new Fixture of FIFA World Cup, on Saturday.

They depend on Messi and Agüero, because Riquelme is not having a good moment. And the two (Messi and Agüero) have play too many games this season.

Today Argentina's U20 football team trashed Uruguay' U20 team 5-0 in a friendly match that was held in San Luis. The goals were scored by Eduardo Salvio,Andres Rios,Jonathan Cristaldo(2) and Cristian Gaitan.

Thanks for the all the comment coming in. Let's hope that we will see some better days in the next two matches.

I do feel your sentiment Denis about Roman's form at the moment. However at the moment he is the only genuine playmaker that we have in this squad. I don't think Coco is going to make any drastic changes to the team.

As for the upfront, I do wish to see MESSI linking up with MILITO rather than AGUERO. Just for a change that is. We really need to someone of a hitman right up there and at the moment MILITO is in hot form.

Well done to the Futsalbiceleste! Looking at their next group stage, I feel we have a good chance to progress further. Our main problem will be Spain with both Brazil and Italy are in the other group. Here is the match highlights from the Guatemala game.

Finally, thanks Rabid for the SCOLA news. I'm hoping with his present, Ron ARTEST, Tracy McGRADY plus a healthier YAO Ming, the Rockets will do well in the new season.
